We had a very successful spindle spinning day. Thanks to the efforts of Rachel Dufton, Hazel
Stansfield, Gwyn Hunt and others, Guild members were able to try out a range of spindles including
drop, top whorl, and supported, with a variety of yarns. We had a lot of fun and a surprising amount
of yarn was spun.

Weaving Overshot: a workshop led by Heather Seddon
You will need a 4-shaft loom and some yarns; you can probably find suitable yarns in your stash.
Yarns: Overshot was traditionally woven with a cotton warp and tabby weft and a wool pattern weft,
but you can use whatever you have. The pattern weft needs to be about twice as thick as the tabby
weft. I’m using a cotton warp about 24 wraps per inch and rug yarn for the pattern. I put 2.5 metres
of warp on my loom for this.
Sett: The warp and tabby weft need to make a firm cloth to support the patterns.
We will be using a 4-shaft draft called Italian Diamond which is quite simple but very versatile:

Dumfries Guild Triennial Exhibition – ‘Fabric Fibre Thread’

Spinning retreat
There are still a few spaces on the spinning retreat at Parcevall Hall, 28 May to 1 June 2015. You can
come for as few or as many days as you like. You don’t have to spin – other portable textile crafts are
welcome (we always have knitters).
The cost is £60 a day all in. Details of the beautiful venue can be found at http://parcevallhall.org.uk/.
There is lots of walking in the wonderful surrounding Dales landscape too, straight from the door
(walk leaflets available).
Car share/ lifts available from east and west Cumbria.

This is being held in London in April, and our delegate this year is Susan Denham-Smith. Papers for

Housekeeping
Some housekeeping issues have been raised:
1) Parking – please park from the near (south) end of the car park to use the space better, and park as
close to the next car as you can.
2) Kitchen – please wash up your mugs, and clear the kitchen by about 3.00pm.
3) Please help put away chairs and tables before you go (although we appreciate that this isn’t always
easy when we have a lot of members still here).

FOR SALE/ WANTED
Loom for sale
Louet Magic Dobby, 24 shaft mechanical dobby, 70cm weaving width, 40 lags, extra pegs and
heddles. Second warp beam.
It can be used as a table loom or on the stand with a treadle. £550.

Spinner wanted
Gwyn has received a request from someone who has inherited some alpaca and silk fibre which she
would like to have spun up for her own knitting (payment to be negotiated). Any offers? I don't know
how much fibre is involved yet but will be happy to put anyone who is interested in touch.

FIBRE/ SPINNING DAYS:
Newbiggin: informal get-togethers at Hazel’s, usually on the 1st Friday of the month; 10am until you
finish. The next one is 3 April 2014 (yes, Good Friday). Phone Hazel if you need directions.
Gilsland: Fibre Friday group meets on the 2nd Friday of each month in Gilsland Village Hall.
