The tournament was full of activity with scores of young wrestlers running about and warming up, an announcer busy directing athletes and their coaches to their assigned mats, and children having fun while competing at something they love. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the kids give everything they had in their matches and then run around the gym with their teammates. The experience made me smile. While I was sitting in the stands, I struck up a conversation with some of our BTSP student athletes. I enjoyed listening to a number of them speak about wrestling and school. All of the student/athletes spoke with passion and hope, but a conversation with one particular young man truly resonated with me. A good student, the young man spoke about his desire to “turn my only B into an A”. He wanted to improve his grades so he could follow in the footsteps of one of his former BTSP teammates and attend one of the most highly regarded high schools in Philadelphia. Despite the very real challenges and personal circumstances that so often seem insurmountable, watching his friend successfully reach for that goal had emboldened him to do the same. He was committed to pushing forward, to leaving his comfort zone and striving for something worthwhile. The intent, optimism and hope in his eyes and resolve in his words were unequivocal. For BTSP to be in a position to help this young man is simultaneously an exciting opportunity and a humbling responsibility. And this is exactly where we aim to be – empowering this young man, and many others like him, to positively “alter his life’s trajectory” by providing him with the resources, tools and support necessary to reach for his goals with confidence, courage and poise. The thought of watching him achieve something he had previously believed to be impossible is exciting – a thought that most certainly brings a smile to my face. Over the last year, BTSP has made a tremendous amount of progress. We have continued to grow intelligently with 19 programs and nearly 1,100 student athletes. We officially launched our mentoring program and are currently nearing our initial goal of 75 student mentees. We relocated our office into the heart of University City, right between the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University, providing an ideal location for our mentoring center. Looking forward over the next 12 months, there is much to be excited about. BTSP will continue to expand its mentoring program – moving us towards our longer term target of 150 student mentees. We will continue to evaluate and add new wrestling programs – while expanding with a new program in Allentown, PA this year. We will remain keenly focused on utilizing our resources as efficiently as possible with a results-driven orientation. Above all, BTSP will remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering, supporting and enabling as many student athletes as possible to take that leap of faith and reach for that next level. On behalf of the entire BTSP Board of Directors, I would like to thank all of those who have helped to support our organization. We are confident that with your help and support, BTSP will continue to grow, learn and evolve as an organization - helping our student athletes to do the same. And that is something that should make everybody smile. Clinton Matter Chairman of the Board Beat the Streets Philadelphia PROGRAM UPDATES MENTORING CENTER EXPANSION In January of 2014, the BTSP Mentoring Center opened in University City. The location is convenient for student-athletes and mentors alike, and provides the perfect setting for “near-peer” mentors from local our Universities to meet with students weekly in a focused, one-on-one setting. The studentathletes enrolled in the program are chosen via collaboration between their coach and BTSP Program Directors based on a variety of criteria that identify those most deserving and most in need of additional support. Mentors meet with BTSP students on a weekly basis to provide support that is specific to each student’s needs including academic tutoring, preparation for a variety of standardized tests, and career and educational guidance in addition to focusing on the development of standard “life” skills. WRESTLING/MENTORING CONNECTION BTSP believes that pairing athletics and mentoring combines two effective means of engaging children during their most formative years. By expanding our mentoring center we have been able to effectively link the two activities for the student-athletes. As part of their participation in the program, they have the opportunity to travel to various events across the country to participate in camps and competitions. This is treated both as a reward for their work related to the mentoring program and an avenue to allow them to continue to hone their skills on the mat. Although wins and losses do not define the impact of our programs, providing the opportunity for student-athletes to challenge themselves on the mat helps develop critical moments where they can overcome adversity. WRESTLING HAS HELPED ME REALIZE I CAN ACCOMPLISH MORE THAN I THOUGHT I WAS CAPABLE OF. Keith Graves 8th Grade, Belmont Charter School PROFILE KEITH GRAVES Keith Graves is currently an 8th grader at Belmont Charter School in West Philadelphia. Keith became a Belmont student as a 6th grader, which is also when he was exposed to the sport of wrestling for the first time. Keith quickly became recognized for his consistent effort and engagement in the sport by his coaches, and was placed on the BTS Middle School Travel Team roster as a result. When the Mentoring Center opened in January of 2014 during Keith’s 7th grade year, he immediately enrolled and began meeting with his mentor, University of Pennsylvania wrestler Brad Wukie, on a weekly basis. Keith’s effort and consistency is on constant display academically as well, which is why he has many options with choosing a high school that will best prepare him for college. OVERALL PROGRESS TOTAL PARTICIPANTS Total participation in our programs increased to just over 1,000 compared to the previous year total of 924. This growth was largely driven organically through increased participation at each program which is a strong indication that our programs are well received by the communities that they serve. GIRLS EXPANSION Our Girls’ Program has expanded opportunities for female participants to engage with the sport in a girls’ only setting. 60 girls have joined our programs with 30 of those having the opportunity to participate in 8 girls’ only tournament across 5 different states. BTSP has a keen focus on expanding access to girls’ only programming moving forward and we were encouraged by the interest over this past academic year. I LOVE MY MENTOR RENEE, SHE MAKES ME HAPPY AND REALLY HELPS ME WITH MY FOCUS Kyla Arroyo 8th Grade, Belmont Charter School PROFILE KYLA ARROYO Kyla is currently an 8th grader at Mariana Bracetti Academy. She began meeting with her mentor, Renee, last year shortly after the Mentoring Center was established in January 2014. Since then her effort and confidence has improved dramatically in school, wrestling, and social arenas. Kyla quickly brought her grades from a C+ average to straight A’s, and qualified for the freestyle national tournament in Fargo, North Dakota over this past summer. Kyla has since been a very regular visitor to the mentoring center, often coming in every day of the week to take advantage of a safe space where she can be comfortable and productive. GRIT IS STICKING WITH YOUR FUTURE- DAY IN, DAY OUT, NOT JUST FOR THE WEEK, NOT JUST FOR THE MONTH, BUT FOR YEARS – AND WORKING REALLY HARD TO MAKE THAT FUTURE A REALITY. Angela Lee Duckworth Psychologist , PhD. University of Pennsylvania GRIT Grit is defined as courage and resolve or strength of character. Research has shown that it has a direct impact on the ability for people to achieve success in classroom and in their careers. BTSP believes our programs have a direct and positive impact on the development of grit in our participants and we measured the results to determine how successful we were in instilling this important characteristic. Of the nearly 500 BTSP participants that completed pre and post surveys, over 83% showed at least some increase in their levels of grit. We believe this is a clear indicator that we are delivering programing that will have a lasting impact on the ability of our student-athletes to become successful. STATISTICS n Over 95% Grade Advancement/Graduation Rate n 78% College Acceptance Rate n 91% attainment of targeted mentoring program goals n 1,000+ Hours of one-to-one mentoring THE FUTURE BTSP will seek to expand in several areas over the coming academic year. These expansion efforts will include the following: n4 Girls Only Wrestling Programs n120 n75 n1 Female Participants Mentoring Participants New Location n1,100 Total Participants Each of these totals fall within a larger organizational plan to increase opportunities for youth through our programs in a sustainable manner.
