CAPTAINS CHRONICLES – DALE HILL GOLF CLUB MEETING 3 THE HAWKINS CUP & THE BOG TROPHEY 10/04/2015 Our third event The Hawkins Cup was going to be contested on the Old course and with glorious spring skies it was sure to be another great day. Oops I almost forgot, there was also the much coveted Bog Trophy to play for. On leaving the house my wife reminded me that it was in my best interest not to bring the trophy home again. I’m not quite sure what she meant, I thought it complemented the mantelpiece!! Today I decided to drag my son Daniel from his XBOX and let him experience a day’s golf with the BTU, with Mr Hawkins joining us as well, the four of us arrived in good time and was greeted by Mr Greenwood and Mr Edwards. As we gathered and enjoyed bacon rolls and coffee Nick realised that we was teeing of late not 11.30 but 12.30. On this delay I reflected that it was lucky that Mr Kane wasn’t attending as he might have over indulged on the amber nectar as he did at Five Lakes! My playing partners for the day were Mr Hawkins and Paul Graham with Daniel being my caddy for the front nine and his grandads for the back nine. The course was in good condition apart from the greens, which were sadly in a dreadful state, hit and hope was my chosen method to putt. Apart from this the four of us had an enjoyable round with Daniel learning all kinds of new words. Anyway after 4 hours of great company , some good golf and some agonising putting it was time to sign our cards. Captain 35 points , paul 27 points and peter 23 points. After such a warm day we all decided to retire to the balcony for a nice cold pint and watch the rest of the groups putt out on the 18th. We was greeted to a lovely meal , roast pork and all the trimmings which was delicious, on our table Mr Washbrook and Mr Diggins was having some banter with Daniel and while trying to cope with this he inadvertently spilt gravy all down his shirt the table erupted in laughter , my son though looked horrified as in a few minutes he was about to help Mr Hawkins with the fines. The raffle draw results were as follows: 1st prize – Anthony Bathurst £30 2nd prize – Ian Smith £20 3rd prize – Keith Wisdom £10 Mr Hawkins was again in good form with the fines and collecting £51 for charity. The nearest the pin winners were : 9th – Mr P Graham 17th – Mr A Bathurst The winners of the yellow ball competition were team 2 – Nick, Reg and Anthony. With only two other teams finishing with their yellow balls Teams 1 and 9 The winners for the day were as follows : 1st – Mr J Davies with 39 points 2nd Mr Wootton with 36 points (On Countback) 3rd Mr Spargo with 36 points The Bog Trophy winners were the members 202 points defeating the captains 201 points Congratulations to Paul Graham and his team. Again many thanks to our generous host for the day Mr Hawkins for all of the prizes and paul again supplying the wine for the nearest the pins. I look forward to seeing everyone at our next meeting at Copthorne Golf Club for the Hamchem Tankard on the 1st of May. Yours in Golf Captain Hammond
