JANE
GREENOFF
- Cross Stitch
J
ane Greenoff is largely self-taught, having
discovered cross stitch after giving up a 15year career in nursing to look after her son,
James. At that time, in 1982, she and her
husband Bill moved to a Cotswold cottage
and looked for something appropriate to
decorate the walls. A neighbour introduced
Jane to counted cross stitch and unaffordable
antique samplers, so in 1983 she decided to
design and stitch her own.
Jane’s prolific writing career began in 1987,
the first book being Cross Stitch Castles and
Cottages, based on the houses for which Jane
was already well known.
Jane Greenoff founded the Cross Stitch Guild
in March 1996, in order to provide an
organisation specifically for cross stitch and
counted thread addicts. Four years later, in
2000, the Cross Stitch Guild published its first
book Cross Stitching on Linen: Favourite
Flowers and launched its own website.
Members receive Itch to Stitch, the CSG
magazine with exclusive projects and
charts/patterns (5 issues per year), discount
on all purchases from the CSG Shop (online)
and a printed catalogue plus special offers and
Members’ treats.
Jane’s iStitch cross stitch software is in great
demand all over the world and is highly
regarded by top designers such as John
Clayton (Heritage Stitchcraft), the late Jo Verso
and Sue Hawkins. Jane has a regular
programme on Create & Craft TV and her
work is featured in the stitching press every
month.

American Samplers
In eighteenth-century America, girls were usually sent to
schools that taught an assortment of skills considered
“female accomplishments”–music, watercolour painting,
comportment, manners, and sewing.
As part of her preparation for the responsibility of sewing
clothes and linens for her future family, most girls completed
at least two samplers. The first was called a marking sampler.
Marking samplers served a dual purpose: they taught a child
basic embroidery techniques and the alphabet and
numbers. This was accomplished by marking them, usually in
a cross stitch, with her initials and a number.
.............................................................................................................
Day 4 A day to explore Colonial Williamsburg including
visits to the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and
the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum.
On this holiday Jane will use these historic designs as the
inspiration for the special project you will work upon. A full
kit will be provided.
