We hope to continue this tradition as we have 2 returning players with some younger players stepping up to fulfill those open positions. As for the boys, we have only 1 returnee from the state tournament last year so it will be a building year with some new players filling spots. We will continue to improve our game through each practice and work on those fundamental strategies. Our goal is to be playing our best golf by the end of season and make it to the state tournament again, both boys and girls. So when Pete Tietgen came to Mrs. Kellen with the idea of growing plants in the classroom, it was perfect. With the use of a new plant light, the students have been growing various flowers. Each student is growing a Moss Rose, Daisy, and Petunia. After the flowers are grown, the students will pick out a pot and combine all their flowers to take home. “I think it’s really nice for Mother’s Day, and it’s a really nice present,” commented Reed Benter. “I think that it is cool and fun because Mrs. Kellen hasn’t done it before,” stated Brooklynn Laposky. By Danielle Schoenefeld In order to learn about contractions, the first graders performed surgery on different words. Mrs Williams started off with giving the students a variety of different words. The class then had to decide which words they could put together to make contractions. The words that the students had to cut apart were printed on paper that was in the shape of a bone, that’s where the surgery part came in. “ It was fun, we got to sit in other peoples desks for a long time,” commented Emma Kellen. “ It was fun, and I thought that it was easy,” reported Bryce Fischer. By Danielle Schoenefeld Drug Abuse Resistance Education is an international substance abuse prevention education program that seeks to prevent use of controlled drugs, membership in gangs, and violent behavior. On March 24, the fifth graders traveled to Gregory to participate in the annual D.A.R.E. Graduation. During the ceremony, the reading of D.A.R.E. reports took place by one student from Burke, Gregory, and Bonesteel. The drug dogs were present and displayed a demonstration. Guest speaker Steve McDowell also talked about all of the things the students learned from D.A.R.E. in the past 9 weeks. At the end of the event, D.A.R.E. diplomas and cupcakes were distributed. “ At the end a drug dog came in. There was three cones set up, and the dog had to sniff under the cones to see if there was any drugs. If there was drugs under the cones he would sit down and bark, then he would tear it to shreds,” said Tye Rozeboom. “ It was fun, we got a certificate and we got to shake four officers hands,” explained Tyler Spencer. Big Pal/ Little Pal is On Its Way By KayDee Kirwan Seniors, that are eligible, may sign up to become a Big Pal of an elementary student. After receiving approval from parents to enter the program, our school’s counselor, Nicole Green, paired an elementary student with a senior. The seniors are required to spend at least an hour every two weeks with their Little Pal. Mindy Kerner is paired with first grader, Danielle Carlson, KayDee Kirwan’s little pals are Leo Mosterd and Emma Kellen, Jaicee Frank is paired with Ava Sargent, Kaleen Rolf has Laney Spencer and Bryce Bartling and Jon Wohlers with Moxon Fox. Second Grade Create and Erupt Volcanoes By KayDee Kirwan The second grade class took an hour out of their day on March 25, to make and erupt mock volcanoes. They made the dough out of flour, salt, and water. In partners, they made volcanoes, all of them being different. They used small pop bottles for a base to create their volcano around. After mixing the dough, they began to form the volcano. Then they made the lava. First, they put baking soda in the bottle and added a few drops of liquid dishwashing soap, then they put half a cup of water and a little bit of glitter into the bottle. They added red food coloring to the vinegar to make it look like real lava. They then poured the vinegar mixture into the bottle, using a funnel. When the vinegar reacted with the baking soda, carbon dioxide gas was formed, causing the lava to move out of the volcano. Ava Johnson says before explosion, “I think it’s really cool, and I want to see it explode!” Fourth Grade Staying Busy Till the End By KayDee Kirwan The fourth grade class has been super busy learning famous South Dakotans. Each student got to pick their favorite one to write and learn more about. They are reading and learning about the reservations as well. For a fun, creative activity for the kids, they are making scratch art. Starting off, the students receive a black coated paper. They then take a scraper tool and draw lines and swirls on the paper. They can put any design they want in between the lines then. The students recently made poems and wrote essays on “What Freedom Means to My Family”. Also learning about the digestive tract and making posters to hang in the hallway. All students received stars on their last spelling test so they celebrated with smoothies on March 18.
