WE WILL, WE WILL ROCK YOU!!! - Ark Burlington Danes Academy

20th March 2015
WE WILL, WE WILL
ROCK YOU!!!
All this week the cast of ‘We Will Rock You!’
have been entertaining audiences in the
Dennis
Potter
theatre
to
rapturous
applause.
Based around the famous songs of 80’s pop
and rock band ‘Queen’, this year’s musical
sent us light-years into the future, to a
cyber-world where all live music is banned
and the owning of instruments is illegal. It
was up to Scaramouche, Galileo and their
gang of rebels to ‘break free’, rock out and
defeat the evil Killer Queen in true musical
theatre style.
It has been a real pleasure to watch this
cast work, and they have been incredibly
dedicated and enthusiastic. They have put
in around six hours rehearsal on top of the
normal school week which is truly
commendable. They will agree that it has
been a lot of fun preparing for this show
and the culmination of all their efforts in the
final show was testimony to their hard work
and talent.
Governor Ken Bromfield Tweeted “The big
BDA promise ‘We Will Rock You!’….mission
accomplished!”
We are particularly proud of Tamara
Kovacevic, a resilient and talented Year 8
student who stepped into the role of
Scaramouche just a day before the first
performance and who worked tirelessly to
prepare for the four performances.
Well done and thank you to all involved;
cast, crew, and for those that came to
support. Auditions for next year’s musical
will be in the summer term so watch this
space…

DANCE JOURNEYS
PERFECT DISORDER
Last week saw 22 students from Year 9 and
12 performing at the prestigious Sadler’s
Wells theatre.
They have been working hard with the
English National Ballet to produce a
stunning piece of work based on the piece:
The Strange Charm of Mother Nature. They
had live music, created for this project and
beautiful costumes.
On Thursday, 6 selected students performed
as the curtain raisers for the English National
Ballet and on the Friday, all 22 students
performed along with 4 other schools as
part of the Dance Journeys project.
Many parents and staff came to watch the
students who were a true credit to the
academy. This was an amazing project and
we are extremely proud of the journey that
each student has been on!

Badminton Tournament
RIBTON’S REWARDS!
Monday saw the academy host the
House Staff and Students Badminton
tournament. It was a fantastic turnout
from both competitors and all who
came down to support their House.
The final game was Philippians vs
Romans with Philippians (Cacherel 9L
and Anwar 9R) winning the title!
Congratulations to Mr Clingham for
leading his House to a victorious finish!
This week’s winner of the £5 prize is:
Hannah Buckley-Smith : for finding a master
key and handing it in to a member of staff.
We appreciate your honesty.
CONGRATULATIONS!
*Winners should collect their reward from Mr Ribton’s
office.

Vertical House Week meets
Science Week!
This week saw the start of our Vertical
House Week, which involves students
from all the year groups working
together during advisory time.
In celebration of Science week, students
collaborated to design glider planes!
“As this is science week I had been
contacting local primary schools to see if
they would like me to do a presentation
for them.
I was invited to ARK Priory Primary
Academy on Thursday morning and went
into their morning assembly to do a
science presentation. Everyone was very
excited and I got to show the pupils lots of
amazing demonstrations, like the “Woosh
Bottle” and the disappearing “Blue
Bottle”
I was helped by some great
volunteers
to
do
the
“Elephants
toothpaste” demo.
The pupils were scientists too - we carried
out a whole hall experiment where all the
pupils held hands to form a circuit and we
managed to get the “energy stick” to
light up and buzz proving that humans
conduct electricity (it’s actually our skin
that does this) and that they had formed
an electrical circuit. Who knows maybe
this was a record??
I had a great time presenting it and
judging by the excited smiles, I definitely
think they did too. The pupils were asked if
they wanted to be scientists after seeing
this and everyone put their hand up, so
hopefully some of them might be the
scientists of the future, which is what
Science Week is all about!”

ARK Debating
Championship
On Monday 16th March, Six Year 9
Debaters representing Ark Burlington Danes
went to the International English Speaking
Union to participate in the annual ARK
debating championship. After suffering a
tough defeat last year, Burlington Danes
was determined to win.
what had gone well and what they could
improve on. Although, everyone did an
amazing job in the main and floor debate,
it was not enough to score the team
another win.
The team was upset and was not expecting
the big news. By just 14 points, Burlington
Danes had made it into the finals with
Helenswood Academy. With a vote from
the other schools, the final motion was
decided to be:
• This house would legalise the trade of
human organs.
Burlington
Danes,
when
given
the
opportunity, had chosen to be the
proposition, after winning a tense game of
Rock, Paper & Scissors. The teams had 20
minutes to prepare themselves for the
debate. Those 20 minutes consisted of a lot
decisions, writing and talking.
Team of Six: Ilias Orfi, Mohammed Hassan, Abeselom
Mebrathu, Saleem Shah, Fatma Sufi and Paris Boxall
There were two prepared debates and a
surprise motion. The prepared motions
were:
• This house would ban cosmetic surgery.
(BDA – Proposition)
• This house would legalise the trade of
human organs. (BDA – Proposition)
The surprise motion was:
• This house believes the media shouldn’t
show imagery of terrorist attacks. (BDA –
Opposition)
Even after losing the first debate, spirit was
not lost and the debaters continued to
work hard, which led to a win in the second
debate. This boosted the energy of the
team and shortly after, it was lunch.
The time for Burlington Danes to put their
hard work to use had come. Both schools
looked confident and it definitely showed
through their speeches. When the debate
had come to a close, it was up to the
judges to decide who went home with the
trophy.
After much anticipation, it was announced
that Burlington Danes had won the annual
ARK debating championship. The team was
both shocked and over-whelmed. The
team received medals and certificates and
the trophy, unfortunately, was still with ARK
Academy (However we can confirm that’s
it’s on it’s way to Burlington Danes).
The team of six are proud to contribute to
the Burlington Danes community and hope
to have the same success next year!

LIBRARY NEWS
Book Review
The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett
Next week is the penultimate week of term,
which means that years eight and nine
have two weeks to reach their Accelerated
Reader targets. Lots of students have
already reached these targets due to a
combination of hard work in lessons and
doing extra work at home or in the library. A
number of students have been coming to
the library after school to do quizzes. For
example, Jaheim Lorenzo in 8N has passed
23 quizzes this half term! This is a real
achievement and the type of work we
want to see from more students.
This week students have been doing
something different in their library lessons.
They have been learning how to use the UExplore website. U-Explore is a fantastic
resource for learning about careers.
Students have been registering on the site
and then looking at the kind of jobs they
want to be doing when they are older and
how they could get into them. Many
students have taken this opportunity to
research some really interesting careers
ranging from drama therapist to stunt
person.
Finally, we have a month left until the end
of the Stan Lee Excelsior Book Award so
there is plenty of time to get involved. We
have already had over fifty rating forms
returned by students and the current
favourite seems to be Ms Marvel: No
Normal. However, Ghost Rider: Engines of
Vengeance has also been really popular
with its story of a normal teenager, who
finds himself with a very special car and in
the middle of a war in LA’s criminal
underworld. This is just one of fourteen
excellent stories and definitely worth a look.
Pop into the library to find out more!
This is one of my absolute favourite books of
all time, from one of my favourite authors.
Although it seems to be a fantasy book
about a witch who’s learning to use magic,
don’t get put off if you don’t really like
books about magic – it’s not at all how it
seems. This isn’t the magic of Harry Potter,
of wands and spells and red sparks, it truly is
the magic of the Discworld, of analytical
reasoning, common sense, and staying
level-headed.
The main character, a young shepherd
named Tiffany Aching lives in a part of the
world named ‘The Chalk’ – not an area
where witchcraft is common or particularly
popular, and her family have been
shepherds in the area for generations, with
little time for anything else. So, when she
has her first encounters with the magical
world, and decides that she wants to
become a witch on the basis that she
wants to question things that others take for
granted, and generally learn more things,
there aren’t a huge amount of people that
can help her. When she ultimately sets out
on a journey, she does so armed with little
more than a clear head, a frying pan, and
a small army of very tiny, blue, and
somewhat inappropriate men that she
can’t seem to get rid of.
This book and the rest in the Tiffany Aching
series is set in the Discworld, and does form
a part of the over-arching Discworld series
for adults, but it’s also a separate and selfcontained young adult series, and requires
no prior knowledge of the lore and
characters of the series. This book is
hilarious, and really intelligently written, and
provides a great introduction to the rest of
Terry Pratchett’s work. I would recommend
it to anyone that wants to read something
funny – whether or not they think they’re a
fan of the fantasy genre – even if you think
you hate fantasy, this is a book that turns
the idea of the fantasy novel on its head,
and you may well be surprised.

BDA SPORTS
WINNING STREAK:
TABLE TENNIS UPDATE
Last weekend, BDA table tennis players
took part in the Milton Keynes Table Tennis
Tournament with excellent results for the
team.
Yassin Seddik gained the 3rd position in 2
completions and played marvellously, whilst
narrowly missing out to qualify for the finals.
Yassmine Al-Amrie also played a good
game. This was her first Milton Keynes
tournament which was quite a challenge
as the level of competition was high, but
she managed to win 4 matches whilst
beating England’s #12 U/13s in one of the
matches!
Robel Berhanykun had his debut for the
tournament and did the school proud.
The top performance of the tournament
came from Cacherel Mirjah-Mercer who
won the U\16s competition in style! He
played extremely well, beating some
players with a higher ranking than him, in
order to win the tournament.
Finally, in other parts of the UK, was another
BDA warrior battling to take home the title.
Israel Awolaja took part in a 4 Stars
tournament in Preston with excellent results
as he narrowly lost out gaining a spot in the
finals.
Please note that the 4 Star tournaments are
the highest level in table tennis, equally like
the national finals.
