Bring the whole family to enjoy 1st Thursday together in SBMA’s Family Resource Center,
located across from the Museum Café on the Lower Level. Museum Teaching Artists are
available to assist families in creating special exhibition-based art projects. Afterwards, enjoy
the galleries until 8 pm.
Myth and Materiality: Latin American Art from the Permanent Collection,
1930–1990
Watercolor Still Life
Thursday, May 2
Inspired by the still life details in Diego Rivera’s works, paint from displays of calla lilies, roses,
and bundles of wood using watercolor on mid-tone paper.
California Dreaming: Plein-Air Painting from San Francisco to San Diego
Pastel Landscapes
Thursday, June 6
Reimagine some of Santa Barbara’s most stunning geography by rendering rolling hills, pale
skies, and towering oaks in pastel.

Visitors of all ages are invited to participate in these hands-on informal workshops with SBMA
Teaching Artists. Each month explore a different medium—clay, metal, ink, wood, photography, paper—all inspired by works of art in the Museum’s collection or special exhibitions. All
participants receive a Free Family Pass to the Museum.

Gunther Gerzso’s Two Personages
Sunday, May 12
Layer brightly colored forms inspired by the natural world and ancient Mexican architecture
to create a portrait in tempera after Gunther Gerzso’s Two Personages.
Printing Ink
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi’s Moon on Musashi Plain
Sunday, June 9
Create a monotype with vibrantly colored printing inks inspired by lunar myths, legends, and
festivals featured in Yoshitoshi’s “One Hundred Aspects of the Moon” on view in the Asian
galleries.
Graphite and Watercolor
Jane Wilbraham’s Crushed
Sunday, July 14
Find the beauty in small-scale natural elements in unexpected urban locations and draw
from weeds, leaves, shells, and other found objects from Santa Barbara’s streets, then add a
watercolor wash.
Unfinished Wood
Allison Smith’s Stockpile
Sunday, August 11
Build a multistoried sculpture from various shapes of unfinished wood and mixed media
objects inspired by Allison Smith’s Stockpile.
Location: Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Front Steps. In the event of inclement weather, activities will be
moved inside to the Museum’s Family Resource Center.
Summer ArtVenture Camps

Monday – Friday
9am – 3pm
At ArtVenture Camps children spend their day immersed in hands-on art making, cultural
history, and creative problem solving. All camps include a visit to the Santa Barbara Museum
of Art to learn about and be inspired by original works of art. The Museum’s exceptional
team of Teaching Artists includes painters and sculptors, a children’s book illustrator, a
ceramicist, a graphic designer, and an art historian who are all experienced art educators.
California Dreaming: Painting in Paradise
June 10 – 14
Create art in nature’s studio by painting and drawing in the great outdoors! Inspired
by the exhibition California Dreaming: Plein-Air Painting from San Francisco to San
Diego, study the techniques of California Impressionists and perfect artistic skills,
while depicting landscapes in new and exciting ways with a variety of materials.
Going Global: Animals in World Art

Take a walk on the wild side! Journey through the Museum with animals from the
permanent collection as your guides. Discover the myths, magic, and meaning behind
each animal while experimenting with various mediums and exploring world cultures.
Sculpt, paint, and print your own menagerie of creatures both real and imagined.
Magical Myths: Gods, Heroes, and Monsters

Discover the magical stories and legends of ancient times! Works of art from the
Museum’s antiquities collection are the starting points before drawing, painting, and
sculpting contemporary versions of gods, heroes, and monsters. Hue and Me: Exploring Color
July 8 – 12
August 5 – 9
Discover how color evokes emotions in the Museum’s permanent collection and the
photography exhibition Un/Natural Color. Hand-tint photographs, get creative with
color field painting, and express yourself with a chromatic sculpture. Do It Yourself: Transforming Craft into Art
July 15 – 19
August 12 – 16
Take a step back from technology and focus on transforming traditional crafts into
larger scale works of art with contemporary twists. Take inspiration from the Museum’s
special exhibition Labour and Wait and use “do-it-yourself” fun to grind pigments, mix
paints, and re-purpose fiber arts, found objects, and more. $215 SBMA Members, $250 Non-Members

These weeklong, full-day camps introduce sculptural and functional ceramics and include
hand building, wheel throwing, finishing, and glazing techniques around age appropriate and
always new themes. Class size is limited to 12.

Enrollment is taken on a first-come, first-served basis. To guarantee a place in a class or a
camp, payment must be received in full at time of enrollment. We accept enrollment online,
by mail, by phone, or by fax.
Scholarships Scholarships are available. To receive a scholarship application please call 884.6441 or email
[email protected]. Scholarships are made possible through the generous support of the
Ridley-Tree Foundation, Montecito Bank & Trust, Harold & Lorraine Wright Trust Scholarship
Fund, Harriet K. Maxwell Scholarship Fund and the Education Center Scholarship Fund.

Full refunds will only be given before May 20, 2013. Memberships are not refundable.

Volunteer!
Teaching Assistant (TA) positions are for 15–18 year olds interested in art and working with
children during the Museum’s ArtVenture Camps at the Ridley-Tree Education Center at
McCormick House (RTEC). The minimum volunteer commitment is two weeks and is equivalent to 80 hours of community service. Teaching Assistants will be responsible for assisting
the Teaching Artists in the classroom, preparing materials, and helping children with handson art making. Email [email protected] for more information.
