Lowther Castle Gardens – A Visit of Discovery
Monday 8th June 2015 – A romantic ruined castle presiding over 130 acres of lost historic gardens in the process of
£45.50
reclamation. Sited on the edge of the Lake District National Park and the Eden Valley. The castle and grounds had
been closed to the public for over 70 years until they became the subject of one of Europe’s largest reclamation and
restoration projects in 2011. The current gardens lie over the top of late 17th century remains, often to the same
footprint, and have survived in varying degree as wild woodland or the Victorian and Edwardian designs. There are beautiful
original features mixed with wild areas that house our protected endangered wildlife, that are defined on the west side by a limestone
escarpment with stunning views over the Ullswater and Haweswater hills towards the old Roman road of High Street. All protected
behind the dramatic Smirke designed ruin of the castle. We include a guided tour along with lunch.
£45.50 (Includes Entry to Lowther Castle Gardens, Guided Tour and Lunch)

acres and consists of parkland, home to many mature trees including Corsican Pines, Atlantic Beech and many Oaks, a
formal lawn surrounded by colour themed herbaceous borders planted for textures and colour throughout the year. A Rose
archway planted with old English Roses leads towards the lake which is surrounded by a woodland pathway made from tree roots and
stumps planted with many spring bulbs, Helebores and Anenomes to give a mass of colour. Opening especially for us, enjoy time to
