The Moghul passion for building endowed Agra with some of the loveliest buildings in the world. The Taj Mahal was built between 1630-1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial in white marble to his queen Mumtaz Mahal. This elegant monument took 22 years to build and employed 20,000 labourers. It is a blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles Taj Mahal is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and the greatest love stories ever written with white marble and precious stones. Of interest is the delicate in lay work of precious stones in marble, which has been done with a great deal of skill. Perhaps the most perfect architectural monument in the world. Lying on a rocky ridge two miles long and one mile wide Fatehpur Sikri is an epic poem in red sandstone (37 km/24 miles from Agra). Now a deserted city, it was built by Akbar around 1570 to commemorate the birth of his son. It is probably the best preserved and complete Mughal palace city of all where impressive public halls, private residences, fortifications, pavilions and palaces. Jaipur: Jaipur is the state capital of Rajasthan and owes its name, planning and foundation to the Maharaja Jai Singh II. In 1727, Jai Singh decided to move from his hillside fortress at Amber to the plains, and thus Jaipur was conceived. It is also know as the "Pink City", derived from the pink painted (the color of hospitality, for the 1853 visit of Prince Albert) sandstone from which the buildings in the old walled city are constructed. Hawa Mahal, Palace of Winds, built in 1799. Part of a huge complex, it overlooks one of Jaipur’s main streets and was originally constructed to offer women of the court a vantage point, behind stone-carved screens, from which to watch the goings-on in the bazaar and the streets. Seven miles outside the city in the rugged hills that surround Jaipur is the magnificent Amber Fort. A painted elephant will take you up to the fort through its huge gateways and pillared pavilions. This Rajput Fortress/Palace was constructed from 1592 by Raja Man Singh II, and is a superb example of Rajput architecture. Departing Amber, visit the well restored Anokhi Haveli which is home to the Museum of Hand Printing, a remarkable display of a private collection of hand crafted textiles. In the afternoon, explore the old city of Jaipur, popularly known as the “Pink City” because of the rose coloured wash that adorns most buildings in the old quarter. The first planned city in the country, its centerpiece is the graceful City Palace, around which the city too shape. Adjacent to the City Palace is the royal Jantar Mantar Observatory, still equipped with the ancient instruments including a very accurate 90 foot sundial, was built by Jai Singh in 1728. Its curiously shaped and oversized implements are astonishingly accurate till today. Tour Cost Includes: All presently applicable taxes are included.
