Organization Overview
Founded in 2000, Calypso Farm and Ecology Center’s mission is to promote
local agriculture and environmental awareness through hands-on education in
natural and farming ecosystems. We do this through a variety of educational
programs – for young and old – both on the farm and in the community. In all
of our programs, we strive to increase access to and awareness of the benefits
of purchasing and eating local foods.
LEAF Camp Counselors
Terms: Five LEAF Camp Counselors will be hired for various lengths through the summer. One will act as
camp leader for a crew.
Dates: All positions start late-May and are between 20-40 hours a week, depending on the camp schedule.
3 counselors will end at the end of June, 2015
1 counselor will end July 24, 2015
2 counselors will end August 3, 2015.
Wage: $9.00/hour (camp leader $10/hour)+ school
garden vegetables during the growing season

Position Overview
LEAF Camp Counselors (Learning Ecology and
Alaskan Farming) will be responsible for providing a
safe and exciting environment for youth attending the
summer gardening camps. Counselors will work
with the LEAF Camp Director and SGI Coordinator to implement daily lessons, games, and activities in the
garden. Campers range in age form 5 - 18 (K-12). Counselors must have a lot of energy and patience to play
with and help the campers. Hours vary from 20 to 40 hours per week depending on the week’s camp schedule.
There are no camps during the week of June 29th. Work will be divided between Pearl Creek Elementary,
Hunter Elementary, Woodriver Elementary, and Randy Smith Middle School Gardens.
The Camp Leader will work directly with the LEAF Camp Director and be responsible for a crew of two other
counselors leading camping sessions. During June there will be two camps at two different gardens requiring
separate crews. The LEAF Camp Leader and the Camp Director will each lead one crew.
Roles and Responsibilities
Provide a safe and enriching environment for
participants
Work with LEAF Camp Director and SGI Coordinator
to carry out planned camp activities
Follow all policies, especially regarding camper safety
Assist with garden maintenance activities as directed
Arrive on time and ready to go with a positive attitude
and lots of energy

Qualifications
High energy, positive, kind, “can-do” attitude
Reliable
Excellent interpersonal communication skills
Ability to work well with others
Belief in Calypso’s mission (see overview
above)
Flexible and friendly
Prior work with kids preferred, not required
CPR/First Aid Certified (training provided)
Must pass a background check
Season Description
The LEAF Counselors will help lead camp lessons and activities in the garden. Camps start June
1st and run through July 31st with a week of June 29th off. Hours will be dependent on the camp
schedule. Counselors will come in half an hour before the scheduled camp start time (hour for
Lead Counselor) and stay about half an hour after to clean up, review the day, and prepare for the
next day. Hours will range between 20 and 40 hours a week, depending on camp schedule and
registration.
In addition to working with the youth attending the camps, some additional garden maintenance
work will be required. Depending on season, there is possibility of extending the time.
