Flamingo Stakes, first major tune-up in the East for
the Triple Crown.
Titne For A Change, running only the sixth race of
Us career, outgamed Dr.
Carter by a neck to win the
record $210,000 purse. Devil's Bag, the 1983 juvenile
champion, syndicated for
$36 million, finished fourth
in the eight-horse field, 7%
lengths back as the 3-10
favorite.
All three colts were pronounced in good shape
Sunday by their trainers.
Trainer Woody Stephens
said Devil's Bag came out
of the race "perfect, not one
hair turned the wrong
way." He blamed himself
for the Hickory Tree stable
colt's first defeat in seven
races.
"I hope he needed the
race," Stephens said. "I
believe I ran a horse not
quite ready."
Devil's Bag had won six
races by a total of 34 races
during which he has never
been challenged for the lead
nor felt the sting of the
whip. He had been touted as
the next Triple Crown
winner.
"He wasn't the same
horse as he was last summer," Stevens said. The
trainer said Devil's Bag
would next run in New
York, using the Gotham

Aitfel Penna Sr., trains
of Triple Grown winner Affirmed, said he was undecided on Time For A
Change's next race, which
he said would be the colt's
only race before the Kentucky Derby.
Penna first thought he
would run Ogden "Dinny"
PUpps' apssitisll in the
Wood M*«norial, but ie now
concerned about New
York's weather. That poses
the i3osaibtlity that Time
For A Change will be entered in the Florida Derby
