About Camp Reel Stories
Only 16% of decision-makers in the film
and television industry are women. Help
us change this by giving young women
a voice and the opportunity to change
how they are represented in film,
television, and digital media.
Camp Reel Stories empowers young
women to value and nurture their own
unique voice, create their own media,
view current media critically and
thoughtfully, and aspire to leadership in
all aspects of their lives.
Camp Reel Stories is a media camp for
girls ages 13-18 years old. Unlike other
media education programs, Campers
learn the entire process of filmmaking
from top female professionals working
in every part of the industry. We show
girls that their stories and ideas have
value and that their audience is waiting.
Campers write, direct, edit, and produce
their own short films, which are then
shown at one of the very successful
Camp Reel Stories Film Festivals held
every summer in the Bay Area.
In a single week, Camp Reel Stories
campers see that their ideas do matter,
that their stories are important, and that
their voices deserve to be heard. See
their films at http://campreelstories.
com/films/.
In July 2013, CRS held our inaugural
camp with over 30 young women and
40 professional volunteers. Over the
course of five days, these young women
wrote, shot and edited 6 outstanding
short films, which they then presented to
over 250 people at the very successful
Camp Reel Stories Film Festival.
In 2014 we doubled in size and had over
60 campers who produced 12 short
films, five of which were accepted into
film festivals around the country.
This year we are growing again. We have
added an Advanced Media Program
along with two, one-week Media Bootcamps. This summer 90 campers will
produce 20 original films.
Your financial support will help us move
towards gender parity in the media both
behind the scenes and on the screen.
Norma has attended Camp
Reel Stories every summer
since it’s inception and now
wants to pursue a career in
film because of Camp Reel
Stories.
“This program is very
inspiring to young girls, to
become involved in media.
This program allows young
girls to find interest and
passion for filmmaking,
and they get support from
women who are actually
working in the film industry.”
“I personally found my
passion for directing and
film editing in this very
program.”
