we are washed clean.

The love of Christ has brought us together as one,
let us exult and be joyful in him.
Let us fear and love the living God,
and let us love from a sincere heart.
Therefore, when we come together as one
let us be on guard lest we be divided in mind.
Let unkind quarrels and disputes cease,
let Christ, let God, be in our midst.
And when we, with the blessed,
gloriously behold your face, O Christ, O God.
There will be immense and righteous joy
throughout infinite ages. Amen.

Office of Tenebrae
The Lord Jesus loves us and gave up his life for us. Few of us will
be called to die the way he died. Yet all of us must lay down our
lives with him and for him. If we would be faithful to the gospel
we must take up our cross daily and follow him.

Please turn off all cell phones and observe a spirit of
prayerful recollection before the Office of Tenebrae begins.
Office of Tenebræ
Tenebrae is the Latin for "darkness." This service, originally the combined offices of
Matins and Lauds on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday, takes its name
from the responsory, Tenebrae factæ sunt, “darkness was wrought.”
Lamentations is a small psalter of communal laments over Jerusalem, following its
destruction by the Babylonians in 587 BC. The first four chapters are alphabetic
acrostics (with a stanza for each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet), and the fifth
has the same number of verses as the alphabet. Each time the cantor sings the various
strophes of the lamentations, the choir first sings a brief chant-like setting of a letter of
the Hebrew alphabet in keeping with the structure of the book.
The gradual extinction of all lights in the Basilica symbolizes the temporary triumph of
the prince of darkness over the Light of the World, and the loud noise, or strepitus, at
the conclusion of the service suggests the earthquake described in the Passion narratives.
The single candle left burning is the symbol and promise of Christ's triumph over death
and darkness.

Lamentations 1: 1-5
Please be seated.
Here begins the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah.
Aleph. How lonely she is now, the once crowded city!
Widowed is she who was mistress over nations;
the princess among the provinces has been made a toiling slave.
Beth. Bitterly she weeps at night, tears upon her cheeks,
with not one to console her of all her dear ones;
her friends have all betrayed her and become her enemies.
Ghimel. Judah has fled into exile from oppression and cruel slavery;
yet where she lives among the nations she finds no place to rest:
all her persecutors come upon her where she is narrowly confined.
Daleth. The roads to Sion mourn for lack of pilgrims going to her feasts;
all her gateways are deserted, her priests groan,
and her virgins sigh; she is in bitter grief.
He. Her foes are uppermost, her enemies are at ease;
the Lord has punished her for her many sins.
Her little ones have gone away, captive before the foe.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord, your God.
Responsory

Dulce pondus sustinet.

Jod. The foe stretched out his hand to all her treasures;
she has seen those nations enter her sanctuary
whom you forbade to come into your assembly.
Caph. All her people groan, searching for bread;
they give their treasures for food, to retain the breath of life.
Look, O Lord, and see how worthless I have become!
Lamed. Come, all you who pass by the way,
look and see whether there is any suffering like my suffering,
which has been dealt me when the Lord afflicted me
on the day of his blazing wrath.
Mem. From on high he sent fire down into my very frame;
he spread a net for my feet, and overthrew me.
He left me desolate, in pain all the day.
Nun. He has kept watch over my sins;
by his hand they have been plaited;
they have settled about my neck;
He has brought my strength to its knees;
the Lord has delivered me into their grip.
I am unable to rise.
Jerusalem, Jerusalem, return to the Lord, your God.

Aleph. I am one who knows affliction from the rod of his anger.
Aleph. One whom he has led and forced to walk in darkness, not in the light.
Aleph. Against me alone he brings back his hand again and again all the day.

Concluding Prayer
The one remaining candle is borne down the center aisle. Only after the candle has completely
disappeared into the foyer of the Basilica is the “strepitus,” or sustained noise, to begin.
Once the candle reemerges into the Basilica, the noise ceases. The ministers, followed by the
assembly, then depart in silence.
Let the paschal fast be kept sacred. Let it be observed everywhere on Good Friday and, where
possible, prolonged through Holy Saturday, as a way of coming to the joys of the Sunday of the
Resurrection uplifted and with a welcoming heart. (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 110)

From the stain of sin to wash us,

God reigns from the tree.

The Adoration of the Holy Cross
plainchant, mode IV
All are invited to venerate the wood of the cross according to personal custom.
Crucem tuam adoramus, Domine: et sanctam resurrectionem tuam Laudamus et glorificamus:
Ecce enim propter lignum venit Gaudium in universo mundo. Deus misereatur nostri,
Et benedicat nobis:
Illuminet vultum suum super nos, Et misereatur nostri.
We adore, O Lord, your cross;
we praise and we glorify
your sacred resurrection.
Because for the timber of the cross
joy came to the whole world.
May God be gracious
and bless us:
and let his face shine upon us
and have mercy on us.
The ReproachesSanders
O my people, what have I done to you? How have I offended you? Answer me!
I opened the sea before you,
but you opened my side with a spear.
I led you out of Egypt, from slavery to freedom, but you led your Savior to the cross.
I led you on your way in a pillar of cloud, but you led me to Pilate’s court.
For forty years I led you safely through the desert. I fed you with manna from heaven, and brought you to a land of plenty: but you led your Savior to the cross.
I bore you up with manna in the desert,
but you struck me down and scourged me.
I gave you saving water from the rock,
but you gave me gall and vinegar to drink.
Holy is God! Holy and strong! Holy immortal One, have mercy on us.
I gave you a royal scepter,
but you gave me a crown of thorns.
What more could I have done for you?
I raised you to the height of majesty,
I planted you as my fairest vine, but you raised me high on a cross.
but you yielded only bitterness:
When I was thirsty you gave me vinegar to drink,
Trisagion
(Greek)
and
you pierced
your Savior’s side with a lance.

Ave verum corpus natum de Maria Virgine:
Vere passum immolatum in cruce pro homine.
Cujus latus perforatum unda fluxit sanguine:
Esto nobis praegustatum in mortis examine.
O dulcis, O pie, O Jesu Fili Mariae; miserere mei. Amen.
Hail, true body, born of the Virgin Mary:
Truly suffering, sacrificed on the cross for us.
From whose pierced side flowed water and blood:
Be for us a foretaste in death’s agony.
O sweet, O loving, O Jesus son of Mary

The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night
O truly blessed night,
worthy alone to know the time and hour
when Christ rose from the underworld!
The sanctifying power of this night
dispels wickedness, washes faults away,
restores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners.

The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night
In accord with ancient tradition, this night is one of vigil (Exodus 12: 42).
We enter it as servants awaiting the Master’s return so that when he comes,
he will find us wide awake and seat us at his table.
The Solemn Beginning of the Vigil or Lucernarium
The Blessing of the Fire and Preparation of the Candle
All the meanings of light at Christmas and Epiphany are gathered here and given new
force. The light of Christ has not only descended to our darkness but has descended into the
far deeper darkness of death to lead us into the light of eternal life.

Anthem
Sowerby
This is the Spirit’s entry now: The water and the Word,
The cross of Jesus on your brow, The seal both felt and heard.
This miracle of life reborn Comes from the Lord of breath;
The perfect man from life was torn; Our life comes through his death.
Let water be the sacred sign That we must die each day
To rise again by his design As followers of his way.
Renewing Spirit, hear our praise For your baptismal power
That washes us through all his days. Cleanse us again this hour.
Assembly’s Renewal of Baptismal Promises
This is a moment of renewed commitment.
Death to sin and life in God are sealed anew in faith and life-giving water.

O sing unto the Lord a new song, for he hath done marvellous things.
With his own right hand, and with his holy arm hath he gotten himself the victory, Alleluia!
It behoveth Christ to suffer and to rise again from the dead:
and so to enter into his glory. Alleluia!
Christ being raised from the dead, dieth no more;
death hath no more dominion over him. Alleluia!
With a voice of singing declare ye this and let it be known,
utter it even unto the ends of the world.
The Lord hath delivered his people.
O be joyful in God, all ye lands,
O sing praises to the honor of his name.
Make his praise to be glorious, Alleluia!
