Rule summary 2015 (updated version 6/5/2015)
All grades are operating of the current rules of hockey as per FIH with minor variations as a result of field size,
age and skill of players.
The variances are outlined below.
Mini Sticks
 Goalies not permitted.
 No penalty corners – instead a free hit is awarded 1m outside of the circle. Where no circle is present a
notional 5m from base line.
 Raised ball is deemed dangerous – including shots on goal.
 Long corners – any time the ball goes over the baseline off a defenders stick whether deliberate
or not the game result in a free hit the attacking team from the marked “23” in line with where
the ball crossed the baseline.
 Free hits - the 5 metre rule stringently applied between attackers and defending players.
 The 5m rule is not applied to attacking players in the attacking half.
 The ball does not need to be taken back 5m from the circle for free hits. A free hit can be taken from
wherever it is awarded but the ball must move 5m or be touched by a defender or a pass completed
before it can be hit into the circle.
Kiwi Sticks
 Goalies are compulsory – fully kitted (not a kicking back)
 Penalty corners are played – 3 defenders and goal keeper with other 2 players at half way
 Long corners – balls going over the base line (other than deliberately) result in a free hit the
attacking team from the marked “23” in line with where the ball crossed the baseline.
 Raised ball shots at goal are permitted – the danger rule still applies.
 Free hits - the 5 metre rule stringently applied (in open field play between the taker of the free hit and
opposition and within 5 metres of the circle between the taker of the free hit and all other players
Kwick Sticks 6 aside
 Goalies are optional.
 Penalty corners are played – 4 defenders, one of which can be a goal keeper with other player at
half way
 Raised ball is deemed dangerous – including shots on goal.
 Long corners – balls going over the base line (other than deliberately) result in a free hit the
attacking team from the marked “23” in line with where the ball crossed the baseline.
 Free hits - the 5 metre rule stringently applied (in open field play between the taker of the free hit and
opposition and within 5 metres of the circle between the taker of the free hit and all other players

opposition and within the attacking 23 metre area between the taker of the free hit and all other players.
 Defending players breaking at a Penalty Corners are sent back to half way and cannot be replaced until
PC is complete. I.e. if PC results in a further PC being awarded the defending team.
 For free hits within the attacking 23 the ball must travel 5m or be touched by a player from either team
before entering the circle.
 Playing the ball above the shoulder is not permitted
Playing up rules
 Teams must pull players from teams in the division/pool below.
 There is no restriction of movement on field players filling in as goal keepers for other teams providing
they are within appropriate age group.
 Play up rules into youth and open grade apply with players able to play up a maximum of 5 times into
th
the single (can only play for one team) team in the higher grade. Upon playing the 6 time the player
risks being regraded permanently into said team and will not be eligible for representative selection in
the primary competition.
 Year 6 players are able to fill in for Kwick Stick 6 aside – they cannot be used in the 11 aside
competition.
