Scripture: Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. considerations announcements Celebrating Easter at CapChurch “Why do we as Christians need a special season to strengthen our relationship with God? How does this annual “tithe” of time and days serve to encourage us as the Lord’s disciples? Lent and its structure offer practical ways to increase our devotion and love for God. If the church is indeed a hospital for the sick and wounded, then it follows that Lent is it’s yearly physical, an annual tune-up that has been practiced by all sorts of Christians since the early days of the Church. Lent is a time to cleanse our wills, realign our spirits and deepen our dependence upon God. It is a period of genuine repentance, of concentrated reconciliation with others, of fasting from all that distracts us, and recommitting our lives to God as holy sacrifices. It is of immense comfort to know that we are on this great Lenten pilgrimage with our brothers and sisters in Christ from every branch of Christendom and every tongue and tribe and nation! May we journey well together and arrive ready and eager to worship Christ at His holy resurrection!” Excerpt by: Barry Krammes, Staff from Biola University, Centre for Christianity, Culture and the Arts. See www.ccca.biola.edu/lent/ for the full Lenten series. Good Friday: Friday, April 3 at 10 am, we will gather at Mulgrave to enter into the story of Jesus’ last days on earth. Capchurch celebrates it’s 42nd Anniversary on March 17, 2015. A quote from Elder Emeritus, Jake Penner from 40 days of Gratitude a few years ago: “I am prompted to say how glad I am that a small group of believers, some forty years ago, decided to start a church called Capilano Christian Community, now known as Cap. When I look back and see how faithful God has been and how He has blessed us I am filled with awe and thanksgiving. So many people, by God’s grace have made Cap what it is today.” (Jake Penner) “Congratulations Cap you are now firmly in midlife!” (Mike Nichols) Did you know? Dr. Gerda Lerner (1920- 2013) founded the field of women's history. She notes that patriarchy was firmly established by 2000 BC with rise of private ownership. Herders wanting their herds to go to their own blood progeny insisted that women be virgins. Young women learned that men were the dominant gender. Fredrich Engles, in The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, called this the "historical defeat of the female sex." Contemporary sociobiologist, Steven Goldberg in The Inevitability of Patriarchy ,[1973] argued that male dominance is a human universal as a result of our biological makeup. Doing the gospel “outside” is all about relationships— loving the displaced, the least and lost as we have been loved by God. In any context you can ask yourself “what is the loving, responsible, and respectful thing to do which will enhance this relationship?” Answer that question and you will be following God’s heart. Today we come to Bible text that has been mistaught and misunderstood and misapplied in the history of the church. It is a text about relationships. Understanding of God’s heart has been replaced by a misleading notion of “Rules for Christian Households” [the title in the NRSV text ]. There is much to unlearn here so that we can be loving, responsible, and respectful in relationships as followers of Jesus. cap at a glance THIS SUNDAY MORNING, Mike Nichols will be speaking on "The End of Patriarchy according to the Bible.” Jay Young, Julie Zimmerman & team will lead worship. Kim Pierrot will lead the service. CAP KIDS (K-4) "Shazam!: where stories come alive, & you become a part of the story!"
