R. Hanauer
History
R. Hanauer was established in 1985 when its
owner, Randy Hanauer, realized that white
pocket squares were a niche that needed to be
filled in the menswear market. At that time,
the only squares available were the “for blow,
not for show” type, and, as Hanauer knew, a
handkerchief is much too large for a suit breast
pocket. Hanauer’s knowledge of fabric, design
and color, combined with his experience as a
manufacturers’ representative made his new
business endeavor possible.
Hanauer designed his first pocket squares, and
with the aid of a seamstress, they were cut, and
sewn on a single machine which could perform
a simulated hand-rolled edge. Much of the
pressing and packaging took place on Hanauer’s
dining room table. He later found a tailor shop
in Rock Hill, South Carolina that would produce
his products. The squares were well-received
by retail stores. Hanauer soon added new
patterns such as tattersalls, plaids and paisleys.
As he grew in talent and confidence, bow ties
and matching cummerbunds were added to his
product line.
In 1989, R. Hanauer, Inc. expanded operations as
the company moved into its own workshop in Fort
Mill, South Carolina. Hanauer continued to grow
his company while working as a manufacturers’
representative until 2009, when he retired from
the rep business to focus his efforts exclusively
on R. Hanauer, Inc. By this time, Randy’s son,
Randall, had joined the business and continues to
work diligently to uphold the high level of quality
and taste that have become synonymous with
R. Hanauer. Randy and Randall work together
closely to bring you a fresh and exciting line every
season.
Commitment to Quality
R. Hanauer, Inc. is committed to the quality of
the products we ship and the service we offer
our customers. All of our silk products are
manufactured at our workshop in Fort Mill, SC.
R. Hanauer bow ties are cut on the bias, which
means the bow ties will look and tie better than
the competition. Consequently, this requires more
fabric and a lower yield than the more common
straight-cut bow ties, but R. Hanauer is never
willing to sacrifice quality for a higher margin. In
addition to the bias cutting method, R. Hanauer
uses an interfacing in its bow ties that ensures the
bow will maintain its shape for years of wear.
The same attention to quality is dedicated to all
R. Hanauer products. Because the cut does not
affect cummerbunds the same way as bow ties,
we use both bias and straight cutting methods
when cutting cummerbunds, allowing the pattern
to dictate the cut. R. Hanauer cummerbunds are
all hand-pleated and pressed; making sure the
pattern is matched from top to bottom.
At R. Hanauer, ascots are cut one at a time. The
pleats are hand-sculpted after each ascot is sewn,
then it is hand-pressed. Pocket squares are
individually cut by hand, the sides are rolled and
the corners are then finished by hand. Our vests
are individually cut to order, and we use horsehair
canvas on the inside of the vest to ensure shape
retention.
We purchase our silk fabric from the finest silk
mills in Italy, England, Switzerland and China.
Our designs are rooted in the traditional style.
R. Hanauer products are timeless.
In December 2010, R. Hanauer, Inc. purchased
a building in historic downtown Fort Mill,
South Carolina. After months of renovations,
it was finally opened in April 2011 as the new
location for R. Hanauer’s offices, showroom, and

Our vest is a five button
front with two lower welt
pockets and a full back.
You may wear a matching
bow tie with your vest,
or a bow tie with a subtle
contrast.
Our ascots are full length
ascots measuring 50
inches long. They are
2-1/2 inches wide at the
neck where there are four
hand pleats. The widest
part at the end is 5-1/2
inches.
The word "Ascot"
comes from the English
racetrack, Ascot Heath,
where the first ascot was
worn.
Pocket Squares........................................................................................................................................................
A jacket's breast pocket was designed to display a pocket square. Without
a pocket square, the breast pocket appears superfluous, and the outfit is
incomplete.
Pocket squares should not match the tie. The pocket square should share
colors that are in your tie, and if possible, the colors in your shirt and jacket.
