It boasts a strong rural character with agricultural roots, while being within close proximity to premiere shopping centers, cultural venues and diverse economic opportunities offered by the Greater Capital Region of Upstate New York. About the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District serves approximately 850 students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 in a geographical range of 126 square miles. Students hail from the towns of Berne, Knox, Westerlo and their surrounding hamlets in Albany County. There are two school buildings: BKW Elementary School serving grades pre-K through 6, and BKW Secondary School serving grades 7-12. have taken on additional responsibilities to streamline and advance the district’s curriculum and instruction. This school year, the district is working tirelessly to increase student achievement. These efforts include adding ELA and math coaches, a data analyst, as well as providing professional development for staff and working with a consultant from Capital Region BOCES on a “Results First” student-achievement program. Our instructional staff consists of about 130 professionals, nearly all of whom possess advanced degrees and certification in core competencies. A designated group of teachers and professional staff District programs, activities and goals are funded by an annual budget of nearly $22 million.
