Community & Area Profile
Located about 25 miles west of Albany and about 150 miles north of New York City, the
Berne-Knox- Westerlo community is nestled in the picturesque Helderberg Mountains. It
boasts a strong rural character with agricultural roots, while being within close proximity to
premiere shopping centers, cultural venues and diverse economic opportunities offered by
the Greater Capital Region of Upstate New York.
Recreational offerings include three lakes – Warner, Thompson and Onderdonk – as well as
Thacher State Park, Thompson’s Lake Campground and hundreds of acres of conservation
land and wildlife sanctuaries.
Nationally-renowned colleges and universities, such as the University at Albany and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, sit at the community’s doorstep, along with “Tech Valley,” a
network of research and development facilities, including the SUNY Polytechnic Institute,
that are attracting high-tech industry to New York’s Capital Region.
LIVING IN THE CAPITAL REGION
The Capital Region is truly a gateway to
the Northeast, located within three hours
of New York City, Boston and Montreal,
and an hour and a half from the majestic
Adirondack Mountains and scenic Catskills.
BKW is in close proximity to the New
York State Capitol and state government
buildings, including the New York State
Museum and the Empire State Performing
Arts Center.
BKW is approximately one hour from
historic Saratoga Springs, with its
horseracing, health spas, and summer performances by the New York City Ballet and
the Philadelphia Orchestra.
There are abundant opportunities for outdoor
recreational activities, such as hiking, skiing,
biking, tennis, golf, swimming and boating.
The area is rich in higher education resources, such as Union College, the University
at Albany, SUNY Poly, Skidmore College,
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Russell Sage
College, Siena College, the College of Saint
Rose, Albany Law School, Albany Medical College and several community colleges.
The area is home to a growing cluster of
high-tech research and manufacturing firms,
including International Sematech, Tokyo
Electron Ltd., and GlobalFoundries. Internationally famous research laboratories General
Electric and SI Group North America are both
located in nearby Schenectady.

The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School
District Board of Education has determined that
the candidate for this position will be a dynamic
educator with a track record of success in raising
student achievement and a clear vision for the
future of our district. The candidate should also
exhibit:
The Board of Education is seeking a highly
qualified educational leader to fill the vacancy
on a permanent basis.The successful candidate
will be appointed on June 1, 2015, and begin
duties on July 1, 2015.

About the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District
The Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School District
serves approximately 850 students from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 in a geographical range of 126
square miles. Students hail from the towns of Berne,
Knox, Westerlo and their surrounding hamlets in
Albany County. There are two school buildings: BKW
Elementary School serving grades pre-K through 6,
and BKW Secondary School serving grades 7-12.
have taken on additional responsibilities to streamline
and advance the district’s curriculum and instruction.
This school year, the district is working tirelessly to
increase student achievement. These efforts include
adding ELA and math coaches, a data analyst, as
well as providing professional development for staff
and working with a consultant from Capital Region
BOCES on a “Results First” student-achievement
program.
Our instructional staff consists of about 130
professionals, nearly all of whom possess advanced
degrees and certification in core competencies. A
designated group of teachers and professional staff
District programs, activities and goals are funded
by an annual budget of nearly $22 million.
