Special Technique
Cable cast-on = Turn work so stitches are on
left needle, *insert needle between first and
2nd stitch on left needle, wrap and draw loop
through (as if making a knit st), slip the new
stitch back onto the left needle; repeat from *
until the desired number of stitches have been
cast-on.

What you will need:

One 5 cm [2”] button, yarn needle
TENSION/GAUGE: 15 sts = 10 cm
[4”]; 19 rows = 10 cm [4”] in
Diamond Stitch. CHECK YOUR
TENSION/GAUGE. Use any size
needle to obtain the tension/
gauge.
Weave in ends. Sew button to right side of
cowl approximately 38 cm [15”] from cast
on, 6.5 cm [2½”] in from edge opposite
buttonhole (see diagram).

Row 5 (Buttonhole Row): K2, *p1, k1; repeat
from * to last 11 sts. With yarn in front, slip
1 purlwise, yarn back. *Slip 1, bind off 1 st;
repeat from * 5 more times. Slip last bound
off stitch back to left needle; turn work. Using
cable cast-on, cast on 7 sts; turn work. Yarn
back, slip 1, pass extra stitch over; k1, p1, k2.
Work Rows 6-8, then Rows 1-5. Cast off.
