Society for Contemporary Craft
(SCC) was founded in 1971 by
Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael
in the belief that contemporary
artists had new things to say with
traditional materials, and that they
needed wider opportunities to

then, SCC has organized more
than 230 exhibitions, created
strong educational and community
outreach programs, established
a satellite gallery and a permanent

SCC is honored to have talented regional
artists, as well as outstanding visiting artists,
teaching in The Studio. Two not to be missed
ceramists visiting in January are Kevin Snipes,
one of three Bridge 12 exhibition artists, who
will present a workshop and Meet a Maker
program on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (see
pages 16 & 26), and Pittsburgh native Sharif
Bey, who studied at Manchester Craftsmen's
Guild and teaches the following weekend (see
page 17).

potential of a wooden spoon? In this
workshop, you will select one of three spoon
designs, transfer the design to wood, and

Shibori is a Japanese term for methods of
dyeing cloth by binding, stitching, folding,
twisting and compressing. This class
introduces students to immersion dyeing with
procion dyes on silk. Each student will dye a
silk scarf in the arashi shibori method, which
translates as ‘wind driven rain’.

The first day provides an introduction to
heat-activated processes using painted
adhesives, metallic foiling, household and
soldering irons, and experimentation with
various fibers. The second day focuses on
hand-stitching and free motion machine
embroidery as contemporary design tools.
Strategies for mounting and professionally
presenting finished fiber creations will also
be covered. Students wishing to explore free
motion machine sewing should bring their own
sewing machines to class on Sunday.

explores material and process in the creation
of 3-D constructions. You will combine
commonplace materials with age-old,

knitting, weaving, felting and crochet, to
fabricate surfaces and structures. Then,
through class demonstrations and individual
exercises, discover the creative potential of
these low-tech, accessible methods and
materials, as well as some of the elements
involved in making three-dimensional works.
The innovative use of materials ranging from
wire to wool from both manufactured and
natural environments will also be covered, and
examples from other artists provided.

necklace or bracelet, as earrings, or carried for

Studio Apprentice
Plique-à-jour, described as stained glass in
miniature, is an enameling technique used
widely in art nouveau jewelry. Students will
learn a basic method of piercing sheet metal
and layering in powdered enamels to create
a pair of earrings. The pieces will be fired
several times in a kiln, producing jewelry where
light passes through the colored, transparent
enamel. Saw piercing, dapping, wet pack
enameling and how to form ear wires will
also be taught. No previous metalsmithing or
enameling experience is required.

Mokume Gane, a Japanese metalsmithing
technique that translates as 'eye of the wood'.
This process manipulates multi-layered
billets of different color metals by punching
and grinding to produce amazing patterns

a laminated stack of copper and brass to
manipulate by punching and filing to expose
a pattern. The patterned pieces will then be
used to create a simple money clip or pair

metals are stretched, bent and patterned by
hammers, punches and templates. Layout

student-centered teaching style will foster skills
that allow each maker to create closed box
forms, which conceal treasures and hidden
surprises. The design and fabrication of
hinges, catches and clasps for boxes, as well

Explore the captivating art of flameworking
while creating beads from hot glass. This
workshop focuses on using the portable
and inexpensive Hot Head torch to make
simple, yet eye-catching, shapes with beads.
Students will move beyond the basic round
bead to craft tubular, square, torpedo, disc
and multi-shaped beads. They will also
experiment with the changes in shape and
texture that result when different tools are
used to 'indent' the glass. New and returning
students are welcome, and can expect to
make four to ten glass beads.

workshop explores encaustic—one of the
most versatile and exciting mediums available
to the contemporary artist. Students will be
introduced to the basics of encaustic

issues, tools, grounds and substrates,
application and painting techniques, fusing,
color mixing, incising, sgraffito, creating
texture, surface manipulation, image transfer
and collage. The class is open to all skill
levels, and no prior experience with encaustic
painting is necessary.

of fiber and encaustic far beyond
straightforward collage to include innovative
materials and marking techniques. Working
on wood, paper and fabric, students will
explore the mark-making possibilities of
rust, branding and compost printing. They
will also combine encaustic with the textural
possibilities of heated Tyvek® fabric and
papers. A series of thought-provoking
exercises will encourage students to step
out of their current comfort zones. The class
is open to those with an intermediate or
advanced level of encaustic experience.

Students will use a range of tools and
techniques to turn medium to large platters
and shallow bowls. Proper methods of
sharpening and using scrapers and gouges,
as well as sanding, will be the focus of tool
work. How to choose the correct wood for a
job will also be discussed. Students will finish
at least one piece to take home and sand.

diameter or larger), or purchase wood from

Use SCC’s wood studio to work independently
on your own woodturning projects. Various
hand tools and power equipment, including
lathes, table and band saws, and a drill press,
will be available to students during the four
weekly open studio sessions. Experienced
woodworkers can use the studio to develop
their turning and carpentry skills.
Tuition: $90 (includes $30 lab fee), or pay as
you go $35 a session

Museum/School Partnership artist
Learn the faceplate turning technique to
make two impressive pieces to hang in your
home—a six- to eight-inch, half-circle mirror
base and wall shelf. You will attach two pieces
of wood to a scrap piece of plywood, and
turn them simultaneously to produce similar
shapes on both pieces. A router will be used
to carve grooves for the mirror and hanging
keyhole, before the wood finish is applied.
This is an intermediate-level workshop for
those with some lathe experience. Projects will
be completed over two days; the first devoted
to lathe work, and the second to assembling
and finishing.

The creative possibilities of incised, decorative
effects achieved by using a trim router on
lathe-turned pieces are as varied as your
imagination. Harvey Fein, a pioneer in this
technique, which can be applied to both
custom-made and production pieces, will
share his specialized knowledge and custom
tooling. Through this class, you will learn the
basics of incising and experiment with the
potential that different forms offer for incised
decoration. You will also work with router arms
custom-designed by Fein to create his
incising techniques.

exhibition & visiting artist from Chicago, IL
Kevin Snipes’ atypical pottery is covered
with quirky, figurative drawings influenced
by traditional and non-traditional art forms,
including street art, architecture, contemporary
painting, art history, children’s drawings
and a fascination with duality. His playfully
profound images represent what is ironically
bound together intrinsically by opposition and
otherness. Snipes’ drawings encourage the
viewer to engage in an intimate investigation
with his ceramic artworks, in order to
encounter the concepts of otherness and
ambiguity of difference revealed within
them. For this program, Snipes will give a
visual presentation that discusses how he is
exploring new understandings of Blackness
in his work. Afterwards, community members
will share their own personal stories and relate
these to issues presented in the artwork. This
open dialogue is the latest program in SCC’s
Faces Seen, Hearts Unknown series.

Childhood Memories of an

Join ceramist Yoko Sekino-Bové for an
evening exploring her porcelain artworks that
mix and match cultural styles and traditional
symbols to create elegant satires. Her
‘Hanafuda Sake Drinking Game Sets’ reflect a
childhood tea party perspective of the darker
adult world of drinking and gambling. Once
a refined card game for Japanese nobility,
Hanafuda became popular for gambling
after the arrival of Portuguese missionaries.
In 1633, this caused Japan to ban card
playing and close off contact with the West.
Clashes of East and West, of refined and
sordid, and of traditional versus satiric, fill the
imagery and forms of Sekino-Bové’s art. She
believes games are ritualized forms of play
with complex rules and props, which provide
safe spaces to test boundaries and examine
private aspects of personality.

CLASS INFORMATION

tudents who register by mail or fax will receive a
confirmation e-mail within seven days.
• It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class
on the correct day and time without additional notice.
• Students may be pictured in SCC promotional materials.
• SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of
courses as announced in the catalog, however,
SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or
to substitute faculty when necessary.
MATERIALS
Instructors may request that students have certain
supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies
upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees
are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by
the instructors. Occasionally, the materials fee is built
into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the
tuition fee.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS
Class and workshop cancellations are decided three
business days before the start date. If a class must be
cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class
fee will be refunded by check.
Refund Policy
Student refund requests must be made at least three
business days before a class begins. There will be a
$25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without
three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes
approximately three weeks.
3-5 Day Workshops
Cancellations with 14 or more days notice:
A student may cancel a registration for a three-, four- or
five-day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date
of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee.
Cancellations with fewer than 14 days notice:
If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the
start date of a three-, four- or five-day workshop, there will
be a 50% cancellation fee.
There will be no refund issued without three business
days notice of a cancellation.
