Claire’s Travel Log
Over the last three months, I have visited
several of RSVP’s partnering agencies to meet with
volunteer managers and volunteers to learn more
about our partnering agencies and the effects they and
their volunteer programs have on the community.
Here is an overview of my travels:
Self-Help for the Elderly Community Center
in downtown San Mateo offers recreational and
educational classes as well as providing services such
as the Meals-on-Wheels Program and a congregate
nutrition program. Michelle Mei, Program
Coordinator, noted that they currently looking for
new drivers in the San Mateo area to deliver food for
the Meals-on-Wheels program.
While touring the Peninsula Jewish
Community Center (PJCC) with Michelle Solomon,
Event and Volunteer Manager, I learned that they
have a state of the art gym, garden, art and exercise
classes and have cultural enrichment events that
cover a wide range of interests. The PJCC is for
everyone in the area, and has a program for older
adults that enables non-driving older adults to “Get
Up & Go” to medical and dental appointments, for
errands such as food shopping or coming to the PJCC
to socialize and to have lunch.
Having heard many positive comments about
the support Avenidas provides the older population of
Palo Alto, I looked forward to this visit. During the
tour, Jyllian Halliburton, Volunteer Program
Director, specified that they support the senior
community with services that include handyman
services, a health & wellness center, information, and
counseling with a social worker on staff. Avenidas
has recreation and education classes and a congregate
nutrition site in partnership with La Comida de
California. Avenidas also has Door to Door: a
transportation program that
takes seniors to
appointments and other activities within an eight mile
radius of Avenidas.
On a Thursday morning at Lytton Gardens in
Palo Alto, you can feel the energy at this Second
Harvest Food Bank-Brown Bag program site.
Promptly at 9 a.m. smiling volunteers quickly and
efficiently handed bags of groceries to a long line of
people. In the tradition of neighbors helping
neighbors, all the volunteers are residents of Lytton
Gardens.

The Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion
Programs will be celebrating 16 years of service in San
Mateo County this year. Over the years, 100+ volunteers
have given 15 – 35 hours of service every week to children or frail adults in our community. Length of service
ranges from a few months to almost 16 years with most
current volunteers serving 5 years or longer. The desire
to volunteer remains strong because of the service provided; but, also because of the physical, mental, emotional, and social benefits received.
FGP and SCP has benefitted from volunteer loyalty. In 2015, the Foster Grandparent Program will have
two volunteers achieve 10 years of service: Leonita Fernandez and Mater Lozano, 87th St. Child Development
Center (CDC) and three volunteers achieve five years:
Julieta Carandang and Angelita Gonzales, Mission St.
CDC and Elvira Santos, Our Second Home. The Senior
Companion Program will have three volunteers achieve
five years: Leo Mikkelsen and Estrella Reyes, Edgewater
Isle Senior Apartments, and Nelda Paulding, MillsPeninsula Senior Focus ADHP/ADCRC. Congratulations
and thank you to those reaching these impressive 5 and 10
year milestones.
The Foster Grandparent Program is pleased that
three new additions have joined us over the past few
months. After completion of federal government grant
requirements, Remberta Macaraeg is now serving at Parkview CDC, Theadora Myles-Gill at Midway CDC and
Ester dela Cruz at South San Francisco Head Start. They
displayed patience and perseverance as we worked
through the on-boarding process prior to placement.
These attributes, as well as their desire to make a difference in the lives of children, will serve them well as Foster Grandparent volunteers.

In Memoriam: May Nichols, a life-long resident
of San Mateo and long-time advocate for seniors in our
County passed away on January 3, 2015. May volunteered on numerous committees serving seniors, was an
RSVP member, and participated on the Senior Focus Volunteer Services Advisory Council. May, after receiving a
Masters in Gerontology at age 71, began her second career at HIP Housing where she served as Service Coordinator for 10+ years. In that capacity, May was instrumental in bringing the Senior Companion Program to Edgewater Isle Senior Apartments over five years ago. May
touched many lives over the years—thank you May for
enriching mine. May’s legacy of service will live on in
San Mateo County.

Volunteer Opportunities
If any opportunities listed below are of interest
to you or your friends, please call the RSVP office at
(650) 696-7660 for details.
VETERANS—The Veterans Mobility Corps
Needs You!
The need for veterans’ transportation is
growing rapidly due to an alarming injury rate of the
men and women returning from recent operations,
and aging veterans who no longer drive. SamTrans
is developing a pilot program to address the special
needs of veterans, many homeless and struggling
with complex challenges.
A key component of the Veterans Mobility
Corps is volunteers must be veterans themselves
because they have a better understanding of what it
means to be part of the military. The Veteran
Volunteers will help veterans to safely use public
transportation, organize and lead group trips on
public transit to places of interest in the Bay area.
Volunteers may also visit veterans’ centers,
meetings, VA medical and congregate living
facilities to encourage other veterans to take
advantage of this free program.
The first Veterans Mobility Corps Training
Class is scheduled for July 2015. The training and
volunteering schedule will be flexible to fit the needs
of volunteers.

and San Mateo Counties provides food to an
average of 250,000 people every month at Brown
Bag sites throughout San Mateo and Santa Clara
Counties. Last year Second Harvest distributed over
52 million pounds of food and volunteers helped
make that happen. Please share your time to provide
nutritious food to low-income seniors.

Free Blood Pressure & Fasting Blood Glucose
(Sugar) Screenings
HEALTH TIP from Janel Jurosky, RN, MSN: Watch out for ‘added sugar’ in the food you buy —it has negative health consequences. This is not referring to naturally occurring sugar in food such as fresh fruit and milk. “Added sugar’ is refined sugar or corn syrups added to foods such as sweetened yogurt, cereal bars, baked items, soda and in products such as ketchup and sauces. The 2015 Dietary Guidelines recommend limiting ‘added sugars’ to no more than 10 % of daily calories—roughly equivalent to one 12 oz soda. This program offers FREE walk-in screenings to
people age 60 and older from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. A 30minute class follows on managing risk factors for high
blood pressure/diabetes or nutrition from 11:15 am to
11:45 am. An 8-hour fast is required the blood glucose

medications ONLY; DELAY diabetes medications until
after the screening).
