Australian Catholic University
In times when the Bradley review, the Grattan Institute report and other global impacts
are re-shaping Australia’s higher education sector, the Australian Catholic University
has continued to progress and excel in many ways. An outstanding example of this
progress is the research undertaken at the Faculty of Health Sciences which is
increasing at a rapid level in both quality and quantity.
One success story in the Faculty of Health Sciences, that is envisioned to grow, is
the Cardiovascular Research Centre (CvRC). This Centre has been established in
collaboration with St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and the University of Melbourne
to address the important field of cardiovascular disease (CVD), a major healthcare
priority of the government.
CvRC reaches across different disciplines that are recognised as impacting directly
or indirectly on CVD and its risk factors. The researchers not only collaborate crossinstitutionally, but also work in multidisciplinary teams. At CvRC, nurses, cardiologists, surgeons, psychologists
and allied health staff all combine their efforts to achieve research outcomes that impact holistically on the care
management of CVD. Not only does this approach foster synergy by combining research efforts and transferring
knowledge across different fields, it also helps to overcome traditional barriers between research and practice. ACU
is proud to be part of such an innovative undertaking.
The Cardiovascular Research Centre is directed by Prof Linda Worrall-Carter (Professor of Cardiovascular Nursing
at ACU) and Prof Robert Whitbourn (a Clinical Cardiologist at St Vincent’s). They spearhead a team of nine heads
of program, each addressing different aspects of CVD. I would like to congratulate both of them on their vision and
passion for this initial project, which garnered support from ACU, St Vincent’s Executive and senior academic staff
from the University of Melbourne.
This Annual Report covers the inaugural years of CvRC, showcasing the enormous potential of this collaboration
and I would like to congratulate the CvRC team for their efforts. With new projects already in the making, CvRC is
on its way to substantially contribute to achieving ACU’s strategic goals in conjunction with its partner institutions. I
commend this report to you and am looking forward to future outcomes.

It is with great pleasure that I recommend this inaugural report of the Cardiovascular
Research Centre.
The report clearly displays early but strong outcomes from this new research endeavour
by St Vincent’s Hospital and its partners. Cardiovascular disease is a high research
priority due to its burden on the community and one which needs addressing from many
different perspectives. St Vincent’s Hospital has had a longstanding collaboration with
the University of Melbourne for many years now in medical training and research. Also,
the Australian Catholic University has a strong nursing tradition here at St Vincent’s
Hospital in Melbourne. The uniqueness of this triad model cannot be undervalued; in
particular, the interdisciplinary approach, bringing nurses, medical and allied health
professionals together to address important ways to improve patient care, is one of
many challenges.
In the relatively short time that the CvRC has been established, it is clear from this report to see that there have been
many inroads and the CvRC has made an excellent start. I look forward to this important ongoing collaboration.

It is my pleasure to recommend this inaugural Annual Report of the Cardiovascular
Research Centre (CvRC).
The establishment of CvRC is an innovative concept that represents a collaboration
across three institutions, namely St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, the Australian
Catholic University and the University of Melbourne. Under the leadership of Prof Robert
Whitbourn and Prof Linda Worrall-Carter they have managed to create synergies in
the research priority area of cardiovascular disease. CvRC offers a new way to explore
and advance this field of research through truly multidisciplinary research.
CvRC’s aim is to conduct cardiovascular research with basic science researchers
informing clinicians and vice-versa. The Centre’s competitive edge is the strong
collaborative approach through conducting multidisciplinary research and emphasising
on the strengths of each institution. Furthermore, it underlines our obligation as
researchers and higher education institutions to build research capacity and provide
training for upcoming researchers as well as to inform evidence-based practice. Implementation into health practice
of advances in knowledge is a key responsibility of the CvRC and is embedded into all its activities.
Once again, I congratulate Prof Worrall-Carter and Prof Whitbourn on this endeavour. This report comprehensively
summarizes the activities of CvRC’s key researchers over the first two years and I highly commend this report to you.

We are very pleased to present you with this
inaugural CvRC Annual report.
The Cardiovascular Research Centre has been a
vision for a number of years and many staff have
worked together in a virtual research capacity
until we formally got together in August 2009 and
launched the Centre late in 2010.
We were fortunate to have significant partnership
support for this initiative; in particular from ACU
where we were able to secure funding for our office
space in the VECCI Building/Albert Street. Equally
as important as support from the institutions, is the
support we receive from our colleagues. We have
a vibrant team of researchers who work together
from ACU, St Vincent’s and the University of
Melbourne.
Cardiovascular disease has many different facets and to address it effectively and efficiently, researchers and
clinicians from several disciplines have combined their efforts and knowledge by establishing CvRC. Furthermore,
we have overcome the traditional barriers to collaboration between universities by combining two universities’ areas
of expertise. In addition, being linked to St Vincent’s Hospital allows for the quick implementation and translation of
our research in order to effectively conduct “bench to bedside” research.
It is our aim to build a sustainable research platform that fosters innovative inquiry and finds new ways for improved
patient care.
All of this would not have been possible without the ongoing support of key people in all three partner organisations.
It was their continuous commitment that eventually made CvRC possible for which we are immensely grateful. We
hope you enjoy this report that covers the research activity to date.

Introducing CvRC
Background
The Cardiovascular Research Centre (CvRC) was established in 2009 as a joint collaboration between St Vincent’s
Hospital Melbourne, the Australian Catholic University (ACU) and the University of Melbourne (UniMelb). CvRC
is committed to excellence in cardiovascular research, with a focus on basic, clinical research and improvement
of health outcomes. Professor Robert Whitbourn (Clinical Cardiologist and Director of Cardiac Catheterization
Laboratories at St Vincent’s) and Professor Linda Worrall-Carter (Professor of Cardiovascular Nursing at ACU) are
co-directors and on the board of management that is guiding the strategic direction of the Centre.
CvRC is a very innovative research initiative which combines
two universities’ areas of strength: the Melbourne Medical
School at the University of Melbourne and the School
of Nursing & Midwifery at ACU. It also showcases how
traditional barriers to collaboration between universities can
be overcome. Furthermore, being linked to a hospital allows
for the direct implementation and translation of this research.
CvRC’s aim to build research capacity and increase
collaborative research is beneficial for all partners in a
long-term perspective. It provides a sustainable research
platform fostering innovative research questions due to
the multidisciplinary approach and the synergetic effects of
working cross-institutionally. Funding for this endeavour is
provided by the partners (ACU, UniMelb, St Vincent’s) and is
supplemented through a variety of means including private
and public grants from a number of sources.
Vision

• To cultivate a multidisciplinary approach
between the health specialities through
building capacity in research training;
• To foster a clinical interface between

There are very few clinical research centres such as this that offer “bench to bedside” research and that come with
a suite of currently nine different research programs covering research topics from Basic Science through to Health
Outcomes/Translational Research. Each program focuses on a different aspect of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
This enables the partners to critically examine this field by applying different angles to find a holistic solution that
can effectively reduce the risk of CVD.
Benefits of CvRC
CvRC focuses on sustainable research productivity which
will provide benefits to all three partners. Furthermore, the
knowledge resulting from the research undertaken and the
enhanced research capacity will, and already does, produce
innovation and efficiencies to benefit the broader community.
The ultimate goal is to establish a dynamic knowledge base
to efficiently and effectively address the social and economic
burden represented by CVD that can successfully compete
in the international arena. The expected flow-on effects are
improved quality of life and social cohesion for patients, and
sustained economic growth.
Additionally, the Centre supports and mentors students and
clinical staff who undertake research training for Honours,
Masters and Doctoral degrees. The team at CvRC is also
committed to building capacity in early career researchers
(ECRs) to foster young talent in this important field of
research.

Governance Structure
The Cardiovascular Research Centre is overseen
by two Directors; one is a clinical nursing Professor,
funded equally as a joint appointment by St Vincent’s
and ACU, and the second is a clinical cardiologist
appointed by St Vincent’s with adjunct appointments
at UniMelb and ACU. The Deputy Director holds a
joint position between the University of Melbourne
and St Vincent’s Hospital. Thus, the responsibility to
ensure efficient and effective management sits with
all three partners.
CvRC
The governing committee is the CvRC Board. It
is responsible for directing strategy, approving
policies, monitoring performance, as well as
assuring financial accountability and adherence to
contractual obligations. The Board accommodates
all three partners to ensure everybody’s interests
are represented. There is also a Heads of Program
Committee which is responsible for leading the
management and operational function of CvRC.

Overall, three programs of research are headed by academics from ACU and the University of Melbourne
respectively, another is co-headed between the two. Another four programs are headed by St Vincent’s Hospital
staff. Each program has a team attached to it which is occasionally cross-institutionally staffed. Furthermore, the

collaborative nature of the Centre.

Program Head of Interventional Cardiology
Prof Robert Whitbourn is one of the founding Directors of the CvRC. In his clinical role he is
the Director of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He
is also an Associate Professor at the Department of Medicine, the University of Melbourne
and an Adjunct Professor to ACU and the Stanford University Medical Center.
His primary interest is interventional cardiology and new device therapies for coronary
artery disease. He has led numerous trials of stents and novel cardiac devices, including
systemic hypothermia for metabolic protection of ischaemia and performed the first cases
in man of renal sympathetic denervation for resistant hypertension.
Professor Linda Worrall-Carter
CvRC Director
Program Head of Health Outcomes Research
Prof Linda Worrall-Carter is the other founding Director of the CVRC. Besides this she is
also Director of the St Vincent’s Centre for Nursing Research (SVCNR) and Deputy Director
of the National Centre for Clinical Outcomes Research (NaCCOR), which is a university
priority research centre at ACU.
Her major areas of expertise in CVD include risk assessment and prevention, women and
CVD, as well as exploring models of care around CVD and depression. She is a strong
advocate for nurses in research and has established effective pathways for implementing
academic research into practice.
Associate Professor Andrew Wilson
CvRC Deputy Director
Program Head of Prevention of CVD
A/Prof Andrew Wilson has been the Deputy Director of CvRC since 2011. He is also a David
Bickart Clinician Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne and works clinically as a
cardiologist at St Vincent’s Melbourne. He has expertise in cardiovascular medicine and
maintains international links with Stanford University, USA.
His particular interest is the prevention of atherosclerosis including risk factor modificationm
especially lipid management. He has published research into the detection of biomarkers
for cardiovascular disease.
Professor David Thompson
Program Head of Psychosocial Research
Professor Thompson is Professor of Nursing at ACU and leads the Senior Proven Research
Team within the Faculty of Health Sciences. He brings extensive clinical and research
experience in cardiac care and rehabilitation to CvRC. He is an international leading
authority in cardiovascular nursing, having made significant contributions in synthesising
and evaluating the evidence for cardiac rehabilitation, designing and evaluating novel early
brief psychosocial interventions for cardiac patients and partners, as well as developing
and validating disease-specific health-outcome measures for cardiovascular disease. Prof
Thompson’s major interests are in developing disease-specific patient-reported outcome
measures and designing and evaluating novel psychosocial interventions.

Associate Professor Chantal Ski
Co-Head of Psychosocial Research
Associate Professor Ski co-heads the program of Psychosocial Research together with
Prof Thompson. With an academic background in psychology, her particular expertise lies
in addressing the cognitive aspects of cardiovascular disease via the development and
evaluation of novel interventions that address the psychosocial aspects of cardiovascular
disease, and also the assessment of outcome measures including scale development and
psychometric analysis.
Associate Professor Andrew MacIsaac
Program Head of Cardiac Services
Associate Professor Andrew MacIsaac is the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Acting Director
of Cardiac Services and Director of Cardiology at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He
is Chair of both the Continuing Education and Recerfication Committee (CERC) and the
Council of Interventional Cardiologists of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.
Professor David Castle
Program Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing
Prof David Castle is currently Chair of Psychiatry at St Vincent’s Health and the University
of Melbourne. Prof Castle’s extensive clinical, epidemiological and qualitative mental health
research experience has spanned a number of domains. His clinical and research expertise
offers the CvRC a unique skill set.
His clinical and research interests span over a number of key areas in relation to psychosocial
treatment interventions. A current area of particular interest is the physical health care of
the mentally ill. He also has internationally acclaimed expertise in the area of body image
disorders, and his work on body dysmorphic disorder is widely known.
Associate Professor Karen-leigh Edward
Deputy Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing
A/Prof Edward is the deputy head of the Mental Health and Wellbeing program. Besides this
she is the Director/Chair of the Nursing Research Unit (NRU) that is positioned between St
Vincent’s and Mercy Private Hospital and the Australian Catholic University. She is also an
Associate Professor of Nursing Research at ACU.
A/Prof Edward’s research interests include resilience, recovery and re-engagement, physical
and mental health, and professional issues in nursing. She has expertise in the development
of clinical pathways for depression in people with cardiac disease and research related to
resilience and chronic conditions as well as women and CVD.

Associate Professor David Prior
Program Head of Heart Failure & Imaging
A/Prof Prior is Director of Non-invasive Cardiac Imaging and Head of Cardiology & Heart
Failure Outpatient Clinics at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He is also an Associate
Professor at the University of Melbourne and a research fellow at St Vincent’s Institute of
Medical Research.
He has a special interest in echocardiography, heart failure, assessment of cardiac function,
pulmonary hypertension and sports cardiology. A/Prof Prior’s research has investigated noninvasive assessment of myocardial function in athletes and patients with heart failure, the
role of echocardiography in diagnosis and prognosis in heart failure, as well as pulmonary
hypertension.
Dr Peter Mossop
Deputy Head of Heart Failure & Imaging
Dr Peter Mossop is Director of Vascular Interventional Radiology at St Vincent’s Hospital
Melbourne. Dr Mossop’s major research interest focuses on the development of novel
endovascular device design and its application to aortic pathology.
He is currently on a sabbatical year in Europe and will return in 2012.
Dr Andrew Newcomb
Program Head of Vascular and Cardiac Surgery
Dr Newcomb is currently the Acting Director of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department
at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne and is also an Honorary Clinical Senior Fellow in the
Department of Surgery at the University of Melbourne.
Dr Newcomb’s research interests include vascular biology of coronary bypass grafts, the
relationship with metabolic syndrome and the function of these grafts, development of a
source of cardiac specific stem cells, and minimally invasive approaches to the surgical
treatment of cardiovascular disease.
Professor Darren Kelly
Program Head of Basic CvD Science
Prof Kelly is the Professorial Fellow and Research Training Director for the Eastern Hill
Academic Centre at the University of Melbourne. In this capacity he also is the Director of
Biomedical Research in the Department of Medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.
Furthermore, he is the CEO of Fibrotech Therapeutics, a company that focuses on
developing orally active anti-fibrotic inhibitors to treat the underlying pathological fibrosis
that occurs in kidney and heart failure.
He is a recognised expert in progressing pre-clinical novel interventions and developing
experimental models of renal and cardiac disease. Prof Kelly’s focus is on transferring his
knowledge in industry, biotechnology and research into a mentoring/leadership role, as well
as developing new links between biomedical sciences and clinical research.

1. Interventional Cardiology
Program Head: Prof Robert Whitbourn
Prof Whitbourn and his team are interested in the early and effective intervention of CVD. They conduct a variety
of clinical trial studies that vary from drug eluting stent studies and drug trials to trialling first-in-man devices with
the overall aim to reduce the death rate resulting from cardiac events. Prof Whitbourn has been involved in many
successful trials and has supported the pathway to get innovative products market-ready to improve patient care.

2. Health Outcomes Research
Program Head: Prof Linda Worrall-Carter
This program is concentrating on the implementation of research results into clinical practice. It pays particular
attention to the role that nurses play in the health care delivery. Prof Worrall-Carter and her team have successfully
trialled a nurse-led clinic at St Vincent’s Melbourne as well as other nurse-led models that are being implemented
in the health care delivery for CVD patients.

The Prevention program looks at innovative ways to tackle CVD by addressing the established primary and secondary
risk factors that may lead to a cardiac event. It is believed that by reducing the risks and educating patients the
mortality rate can be decreased and the quality of life of people who live with chronic cardiac disease can be improved.

6. Mental Health and Wellbeing
Program Head: Prof David Castle Deputy Head: A/Prof Karen-leigh Edward
Mental health and wellbeing has been found to impact strongly on the established risk factors of CVD. Reciprocally, a
cardiac event has adverse affects on the mental health and wellbeing of patients. The novel program of Collaborative
Therapy for the holistic treatment of people with mental illness, developed by Prof Castle and his colleagues, has been
widely acknowledged as a leading example of comprehensive consumer-oriented care, and has been adopted by
mental health services both within Victoria and nationally. This program within CvRC focuses on CVD related depression
in patients by looking at screening and referral mechanisms for cardiac patients as well as its interrelation with other risks
for CVD such as smoking and obesity.

• An audit of current screening and referral mechanisms towards the recognition and treatment for depression in
people with cardiac disease
• Being ‘fat’ in today’s world: A socio-cultural investigation of overweight and obesity
• An open trial of a (CBT)-based smoking cessation intervention plus varenicline intervention in people with a psychotic
disorder
• Improving the lifestyles of people with a psychotic illness
• An audit of metabolic monitoring in a mental health service

The Psychosocial Research Program aims to provide patients, families and clinicians with the information and skills
necessary to improve cardiovascular health and wellbeing. The primary area of research pertains to psychosocial
interventions and outcome measurement, inclusive of behavioural and lifestyle change, in order to reduce the risk
of cardiovascular disease and burden.

9. Heart Failure & Imaging
Program Head: A/Prof David Prior Deputy Head: Dr Peter Mossop
The Heart Failure and Imaging program focuses on the use of non-invasive cardiac imaging to understand both
physiological and pathological cardiac and pulmonary vascular function. Physiology is studied in athletes and pathology
is studied in subjects with heart failure, those at risk of heart failure and those at risk of pulmonary hypertension. In
some cases, the differentiation of normal physiologic changes and early pathologic changes can be difficult and
the researchers are focusing on the early identification of disease states in athletes through the use of screening
electrocardiograms (ECGs); in those at risk of heart failure through the use of blood tests, ECG and echocardiography,
and in those patients with scleroderma who are at risk of pulmonary hypertension through the use of echocardiography
during exercise or other forms of stress-testing. The program aims to identify disease states at an early stage where
treatment strategies are likely to be more effective in preventing death or disability.

In July 2011, CvRC launched its website (www.cvrc.edu.
au) which will also be a vehicle to update the public with
current research results, ongoing projects and offer people
interested in research a platform to access experienced
researchers. It is hoped that the work CvRC conducts
will influence evidence-based practice and educate the
community, in order to eventually decrease the risk of CVD.

CvRC Launch
CvRC has been operating as a “virtual centre” since August 2009. The physical establishment of the centre in the
VECCI Building in Albert Street, East Melbourne in August 2010 has provided a professional space for some of the
research teams. CvRC celebrated the launch of its new location in November 2010.

Australia & New Zealand Optical Coherence Tomography (ANZ OCT) Workshop
Around 100 specialists, researchers, nursing and technical staff from
across Australia and New Zealand attended the inaugural Australia &
New Zealand Optical Coherence Tomography (ANZ OCT) Workshop.
The event, which was founded by Dr Peter Barlis (Northern Hospital)
and Prof Whitbourn, was held in Melbourne at the Park Hyatt’s Ballroom on the May 7, 2010.
The workshop explored the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT),
highly detailed coronary imaging equipment, particularly in the diagnosis
and management of patients with heart disease.
The guest faculty comprised internationally renowned clinicians and scientists, including Dr Dougal McClean (Christchurch Hospital), Professor
Ian Meredith (Monash Heart), Professor John Ormiston (Auckland City
Hospital), Dr Chris Raffel (Prince Charles Hospital), Professor Darren
Walters (Prince Charles Hospital), Professor Stephen Worthley (Royal
Adelaide Hospital) and Dr Shaosong Zhang (LightLab Imaging).
Prof Whitbourn said there was a void in information about novel intracoronary imaging technologies across Australia and New Zealand and
so the workshop had been an “ideal forum” to bring together clinicians
and researchers interested in studying the technology.

Dr La Gerche received the Cardiac Society of Australia and
New Zealand’s Ralph Reader Prize in 2010 (Clinical Science Section) for “Intense prolonged exercise (IPE) causes
acute right ventricular (RV) injury which may not always be
completely reversible”.
A/Prof Wilson was awarded the Sylvia & Charles Viertel
Charitable Foundation’s Clinical Research Fellowship

Prof Castle was presented with the 2011 MSD Senior
Research Award by the Royal Australian and New Zealand
College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). The award is given to
the Fellow who has made the most significant contribution
to psychiatric research in Australia and New Zealand over
the preceding five years.

Research Outcomes
Over the past years, staff members from ACU, St Vincent’s and the University of Melbourne have engaged in
several successful research collaborations, demonstrating the ability of this group to operate as a partnership.
Since the formal establishment of CvRC, staff has attracted over 20 CvRC-led grants totalling $2.3 million and has
been involved in a further 17 collaborative grants worth an additional $8.5 million. CvRC researchers have also
published over 190 journal articles and held several hundred presentations. This is not only helping to increase
the public’s knowledge about CVD and its risk factors but is also impacting positively on the reputation of the
partner institutions in this chosen field of research, creating a competitive advantage towards other institutions
within Australia and beyond.
