Donald Runnicles and I have chosen some of the greatest Robert Shaw signature works in a season that will see the orchestra return to Carnegie Hall on his birthday with our peerless Atlanta Symphony Chorus to perform the Brahms Requiem, one of Mr. Shaw’s favorite masterworks. We also honor Mr. Shaw’s spirit as we continue stra 2015/16 season! our championing of new works with four world premieres and a roster of guest soloists and conductors, some of whom began their careers under Mr. Shaw’s guidance. The urgency of Robert Shaw’s passion for connecting with audiences guides us today. He said: “To be an artist is not the privilege of a few but the necessity of us all.” All of us at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra invite you to join us as we begin that quest again next season. — Robert Spano, Music Director 1 404.733.4800 | aso.org Getting Started: There are many paths to great music this season. His supreme intellect, his force of personality, his musicianship, his standards for study and performance, and his dynamic vision for the place of the arts in modern society literally transformed my life and the lives of so many others. A giant of the 20th century musical scene, Shaw almost singlehandedly created a distinctly American choral style with his landmark performances and recordings in New York, Cleveland and Atlanta and with the Robert Shaw Chorale. He built the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra into a disciplined and persuasive ensemble. His passion for true amateurism in the arts at the highest level produced the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus. The extraordinary force of his musical DNA still courses through every fiber of this institution. The exciting season described in this brochure reflects the realization of Mr. Shaw’s dream for this orchestra and chorus in diverse and imaginative ways. It is a true celebration of a unique and inspiring legacy. Together with Robert Spano, Donald Runnicles, and all of my friends and colleagues in the ASO and ASOC, I am honored to share it with you. — Norman Mackenzie NOV 12/14 Thu/Sat: 8pm Robert Spano, conductor Latonia Moore, soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano, mezzo-soprano Anthony Dean Griffey, tenor Nathan Stark, bass ASO Chorus VERDI: Requiem JAN 21/23 Thu/Sat: 8pm Donald Runnicles, conductor Kim-Lillian Strebel, soprano Stephanie Lauricella, mezzo-soprano Shawn Mathey, tenor Marko Mimica, bass ASO Chorus BEETHOVEN: Missa solemnis MAR 10/12 Thu/Sat: 8pm Norman Mackenzie, conductor ASO Chamber Chorus ASO Chorus A SHAW CHORAL CELEBRATION MOZART: Mass in C, “Coronation Mass” BRAHMS: Nänie MENDELSSOHN: Heilig VERDI: Stabat Mater POULENC: Gloria in Excelsis Deo DURUFLÉ: Requiem, “Sanctus” BACH: Mass in B Minor, “Gratias agimus tibi” MENDELSSOHN: Elijah, “Lord, Our Creator” APR 14/16 Thu/Sat: 8pm Robert Spano, conductor Jessica Rivera, soprano Nmon Ford, baritone ASO Chorus JONATHAN LESHNOFF: Zohar WORLD PREMIERE BRAHMS: A German Requiem JUN 9/11 Thu/Sat: 8pm Robert Spano, conductor André Watts, piano BRAHMS: Piano Concerto No. 2 BRAHMS: Symphony No. 2 — a Robert Shaw favorite Concerts listed above are also part of Delta Classical Series 1, 2, 3 & 4 packages. 4 Special 5-concert series!
