Baptism of the Lord
T he Christmas season con-
cludes with the Feast of the
Baptism of the Lord. It is appropriate that this is so, for
Jesus comes into the world
not to live in obscurity but to perform the
mission given Him by the Father with the
power of the Holy Spirit. His baptism comes at
the start of His public life and heralds His
ministry. The account of the work of John the
Baptist in the Gospel of Mark is quite brief. He
preaches “a baptism of repentance for the
forgiveness of sins.” John urges people to
change their hearts and lives in preparation
for the Messiah. The Gospels of Matthew and
Luke give far fuller accounts of the preaching
of the Baptist, and add significantly to the
brief account in the Gospel of Mark. In the
passage for this feast, John proclaims that the
one who is to come will be “more powerful
than I am.” John's preaching attracted crowds
of people and had a strong effect on them.
When Jesus comes, John implies, He will
confront evil in all its forms with the power of
the Spirit. This “more powerful” one will bring
a baptism which will have a deeper and more
lasting effect, for it will be baptism in the Holy
Spirit. The evangelist does not dwell long on
the actual baptism of Jesus, this clear
demonstration of His solidarity with all those
who need healing and forgiveness. Mark puts
the emphasis on the vision Jesus sees and the
voice He hears. The baptism story shows Jesus
to be the Spirit-filled Servant of God. His
mission reflects that of the servant described
in those passages in the second part of the
Book of Isaiah known as the “servant songs,”
one of which is our first reading. Jesus is the
beloved Son of God, who will always do what
pleases the Father.
How appropriate is it to conclude the
Christmas celebration with the Feast of the
Baptism of Jesus.
January 11, 2015
Today, we celebrate the Baptism of the
Lord. The U.S. Bishops pastoral on
Stewardship reminds us that Baptism gives
All of His Disciples a share in His
priestly work & calls them “to offer up the world & all that is
in it—especially themselves—to the Lord of all.”

St. James Online Offertory Giving
Beginning January 15th, we will be
offering Online Giving! Online Giving
is an electronic tool for contributions
so you can give via the Internet and
maintain your giving, even if you cannot be here at
Mass. This also helps the parish streamline our cash
flow, especially during bad weather or vacation
times. Visit our Online Giving website to sign up
and to begin contributing automatically to our parish. This convenient new system does not require
you to contact your bank to sign up or to make
changes. You can use any of your checking or savings accounts and the funds will be automatically
transferred to our parish bank account. This system
is more convenient for the parish than electronic
checks from your bank. And it’s convenient for you
because you can make changes at any time. You can
see reports on your contribution history and generate tax statements at each year’s end. Visit https://
www.osvonlinegiving.com/1729 to get started. You
will also find a direct link to Online Giving on our
parish website.

Spiritual Adoption
LCA Accepting 2015-16 Applications
Spiritual Adoption: The 40-week journey of the
Babies whom you spiritually adopted has been completed and the those babies would be born already or
in the next week or so. Sixty-four parishioners participated in the program by agreeing to pray
every day for the babies and their Mothers who
may have been considering abortion. We all followed the babies development in the womb through
the weekly updates in the bulletin. To celebrate the
birth of our babies, there is special bulletin board
with the names of the babies chosen by the participants that can be found at the courtyard entrance of
the church. Also, we would like to ask the whole
parish to celebrate by bringing babies items to be
donated to Birthright on the weekend of January
24 and 25. The items will be distributed by Birthright to needy mothers and their babies. Items to be
donated are baby clothing (new or gently used) size
newborn to 18 months, disposable diapers, wipes,
bottles, baby lotions or body wash, baby blankets
and sheets, socks, small toys such as rattles.
LCA is now accepting applications for
the 2015-16 school year for all grades,
kindergarten through 8 and preschool.
Space is limited, so parishioners are encouraged to
get applications in soon. LCA will be hosting an allschool Open House on Sunday, January 25th
from 2-4 pm. For more information, call LCA
Admissions at 216-521-0559 or visit our website at
