Those able to examine themselves, accept Jesus as their Savior, confess their sins, and acknowledge his true presence in the Sacrament are welcome to partake. Holy Communion is offered with both common and individual cups (8:30 AM). If you desire the common cup, wait for the server to bring it. The common cup is filled with wine. The individual cups also have wine, except for the inner ring of cups in the serving tray, which hold white grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you have questions, please speak to the Pastor. If you would like assistance to the altar during communion, speak to an usher. For the church these are ways of pointing to the unique authority people sensed in Jesus' actions and words. We encounter that authority in God's word, around which we gather, the word that trumps any lesser spirit that would claim power over us, freeing us to follow Jesus. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC GATHERING Stand GATHERING HYMN “O Christ, the Healer, We Have Come” [Tune: Puer nobis, LSB 344] 1 O Christ, the healer, we have come to pray for health, to plead for friends. How can we fail to be restored when reached by love that never ends? 3 In conflicts that destroy our health we recognize the world’s disease; our common life declares our ills. Is there no cure, O Christ, for these? 2 From ev’ry ailment flesh endures our bodies clamor to be freed; yet in our hearts we would confess that wholeness is our deepest need. 4 Grant that we all, made on in faith, in your community may find the wholeness that, enriching us, shall reach and prosper humankind. INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (We begin our worship around the word “ACTS”) Adoration Confession Thanksgiving Supplication ADORATION—Psalm 111 P: Praise the LORD! I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart, C: in the company of the upright, in the congregation. P: Great are the works of the LORD, C: studied by all who delight in them. 3 P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: P: C: Full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds; the LORD is gracious and merciful. He provides food for those who fear him; he is ever mindful of his covenant. He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the heritage of the nations. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name. P: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; C: all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever. CONFESSION P: God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. P: Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Silence is kept for reflection. P: Most merciful God, C: we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. P: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the + Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. THANKSGIVING Hymn 805 “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow” 4 SUPPLICATION P: Let us pray. Compassionate God, you gather the whole universe into your radiant presence and continually reveal your Son as our Savior. Bring wholeness to all that is broken and speak truth to us in our confusion, that all creation will see and know your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. C: Amen. Sit WORD FIRST READING—Deuteronomy 18:15-20 (Please see the final page of this worship folder.) Today's reading is part of a longer discourse in Deuteronomy, an updating of the law for the Israelite community as the people wait to enter the promised land. Here Moses assures the people that God will continue to guide them through prophets who will proclaim the divine word. After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. SECOND READING—1 Corinthians 8:1-13 (Please see the final page of this worship folder.) Paul is concerned about how some Corinthian Christians use their freedom in Christ as license to engage in non-Christian behavior that sets a damaging example to other, impressionable, believers. Christians have a responsibility to each other that their behavior does not cause a sister or brother to sin. After the reading: A: The word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand HOLY GOSPEL—Mark 1:21-28 (Please see the final page of this worship folder.) The story has barely begun, and already the battle is joined. Jesus sides with humanity against every force that would bring death and disease. These forces recognize Jesus and know what his power means for them. This, however, is only the first fight. The war will go on much longer. Before the reading: P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. C: Glory to you, O Lord. After the reading: P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. Sit 5 SERMON Text: Mark 1:21-28 Theme: “Authority—Curse or Comfort?” HYMN OF THE DAY “Praise the One Who Breaks the Darkness” 6 Words: Rusty Edwards, b. 1955, copyright © 1987 Hope Publishing Company. Stand APOSTLES’ CREED P: God has made us his people through our baptism into Christ. Living together in trust and hope, we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P: Called to know, love, and follow you, O God, we pray for the church, the world, and all in need. After each petition: P: Lord, in your mercy, C: hear our prayer. The prayers conclude: P: Trusting your love and healing, O God, we commend to you all for whom we pray, knowing you will hear and answer, through Christ our Lord. C: Amen. Sit 7 GATHERING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY RECEIVING OF OFFERINGS GATHERING OF ATTENDANCE SHEETS (All members, visitors, and guests are asked to sign the red Record of Fellowship and return it to the end of the row.) Stand OFFERTORY PRAYER P: Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. C: Amen. MEAL PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY 8 EUCHARISTIC PRAYER LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. COMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK February 2—Presentation of Our Lord Forty days after the birth of Christ we mark the day Mary and Joseph presented him in the temple in accordance with Jewish law. There a prophetess named Anna began to speak of the redemption of Israel when she saw the young child. Simeon also greeted Mary and Joseph. He responded to the presence of the consolation of Israel in this child with the words of the Nunc dimittis. His song described Jesus as a “light for the Meeting of the Lord nations.” Orthodox from Belarus (1731) Because of the link between Jesus as the light for the nations, and because an old reading for this festival contains a line from the prophet Zephaniah, “I will search Jerusalem with candles,” the day is also known as Candlemas, a day when candles are blessed for the coming year. Ansgar Etching by Hugo Hamilton (1830) February 3—Ansgar, Bishop of Hamburg, missionary to Denmark and Sweden, died 865 Ansgar was a monk who led a mission to Denmark and later to Sweden, where he built the first church. His work ran into difficulties with the rulers of the day, and he was forced to withdraw into Germany, where he served as bishop in Hamburg. Despite his difficulties in Sweden, he persisted in his mission work and later helped consecrate Gothbert as the first bishop of Sweden. Ansgar had a deep love for the poor. He would wash their feet and serve them food provided by the parish. 11 February 5—The Martyrs of Japan, died 1597 In the sixteenth century, Jesuit missionaries, followed by Franciscans, introduced the Christian faith in Japan. But a promising beginning to those missions—perhaps as many as 300,000 Christians by the end of the sixteenth century—met complications from competition between the missionary groups, political difficulty between Spain and Portugal, and factions within the government of Japan. Christianity was suppressed. By 1630, Christianity was driven underground. Today we commemorate the first martyrs of Japan, twenty-six missionaries and converts, who were killed by crucifixion. Two hundred and fifty years later, when Christian missionaries returned to Japan, they found a community of Japanese Christians that had survived underground. From Sundays and Seasons.com. FUNERAL PLANNING: In the days following a death, it can often be overwhelming for family members to put together the details of a funeral. Whether it is following a long illness or a sur prising accident, your loved ones may wonder what your wishes really were. Have you identified your wishes, written them down, and shared them with your family? To help you with this decision-making, ILCUSC’s Health and Wellness Committee has printed a “Funeral Planning Worksheet” for your use. You may find copies of this document on the table in the church’s entryway. But that’s just our sinful flesh talking. Jesus’ authority is something we need. We need him to show us what to believe and how to live —for Jesus’ authority is always connected to his love.
