1ST SUNDAY OF LENT • FEBRUARY 22, 2015 As members of St. Dominic Catholic Parish, we commit ourselves “To Seek Christ, Know Christ, and Become Christ, Each One for the Sake of All.” 18255 WEST CAPITOL DRIVE • BROOKFIELD, WI 53045 Message from Our Pastor Lent 2015 Has Begun! I hope this Lenten journey becomes a graced opportunity for all members of our parish family to grow in enthusiasm for our faith in Jesus Christ and the practice of our Catholic faith. May these days bring about a spiritual renewal within all of us, resulting in a rekindled vitality of faith! I hope the penitential practices and the sacrifices we will be voluntarily doing, may remind us of our main goal these 40 days, namely, to become more like Christ! Sometimes, we need to find that special, quiet place for personal prayer. For your convenience, we remind you that our Parish Chapel is open for prayer, your recitation of the rosary, etc., daily from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Since the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the tabernacle, what a beautiful prayer space to spend some time in the company of the Lord. A periodic visit to the Blessed Sacrament could be just that special decision that will help make Lent 2015, a time of spiritual renewal. May I also recommend two special offerings to assist you in your desire to spend more time in prayer: first, Lenten Vespers on Wednesdays in the Chapel at 7:00 pm, and then, Stations of the Cross on Fridays in the Church at 7:00 pm. May the spirit of our Lenten journey lead us to the joy of Easter, Father David H. Reith w w w. s t d o m i n i c . n e t 2 Consultation For The 2015 Extraordinary Synod Of Bishops In October of 2014, the Extraordinary Synod was called by Pope Francis to focus on marriage and the family. The Extraordinary Synod drew on responses from a global consultation, as well as from testimonies from married couples from around the world, on the joys and challenges of family life in our times. In the spirit of dialogue, Pope Francis wishes to receive further feedback from Catholics on the outcome of the Extraordinary Synod, to help the Church prepare for the Ordinary Synod on the Family that is scheduled for October 2 - 25, 2015. This Ordinary Synod will consider the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and contemporary world, and will produce specific guidance on the pastoral care of families in our times. Archbishop Listecki invites you to participate in a consultation process in preparation of his report to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops by participating in a survey to share your views on modern-day family life. You are encouraged to read the preparatory document for the context of the questions, which you may access at the archdiocesan website, www.archmil.org. The Archbishop asks that you prayerfully consider the prepared questions, and if you are interested in participating, complete the online-consultation on the Archdiocesan website at www.archmil.org. A short response time has been given to us. In order for the Archdiocese to gather the information and forward it to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, please respond by Sunday, March 1, 2015. Join Us For A Biblical Walk Through The Mass Do you understand the meaning behind the parts of the Mass? In his video-based study, A Biblical Walk Through the Mass, Dr. Edward Sri explores the roots of the words and gestures we experience at Mass and explains their profound significance. Liturgy of the Hours “Sung Vespers” We are all familiar with the liturgy we celebrate together every weekend, the Mass. But did you know there is another liturgy of the Church, sometimes called “the official prayer of the Church”? It is the Liturgy of the Hours, by which we sanctify every part of the day in union with people all over the world. Every Wednesday in Lent (except Tuesday, March 17), at 7:00 pm, we will celebrate evening prayer or “Vespers” in the Chapel. We call it “Sung Vespers” because, with the exception of the prayers after the Psalms and the Scripture Reading, the entire prayer is sung by those gathered and a cantor. This is a high school coed paraOlympic sport team, with a number of players going on to play in college. Both teams are ranked nationally in the top 5 and are sure to display the same intensity and enthusiasm of able-bodied players. Come experience and cheer! w w w. s t d o m i n i c . n e t 4 Do You Have A Game Plan For Lent? We gave it our best shot in providing one, by preparing the Lenten Outreach 2015 flyer that was in the bulletin last week. It contains brief ideas for prayer, fasting and almsgiving for each week. As you try to get your mind into it, turn to Jesus, our superhero, and ask Him what He wants you to do in order to become Christ to one another, especially for our neighbors at All Saints Catholic Parish. The best Lent is one in which we enter the season wholeheartedly. The solution is to simplify our disciplines, focus our intentions and concentrate more clearly on our spiritual goals. To keep it simple this Lent, try the “1-1-1 Plan”: one sin, one add-in, one give-up. Concentrate or focus on one sin or fault that is getting in the way of your relationship with God and with others. Add one positive activity that will deepen your prayer and spiritual life, especially if you think you are too busy to put anything more into an impossibly busy schedule, and deny yourself something you really like or are attached to. One sin: Most of us, if we are honest, know at least one area of sin to focus on during Lent. Either something you are doing or something you have failed to do. If you aren’t sure, or are having trouble narrowing it down, use the traditional seven deadly sins or focus on the corporal work of mercy for the week. One add-in: Next, add one thing of God to your routine that you haven’t been doing and schedule a regular time when you put it on your calendar so you don’t forget. Ideas include: go to Mass in the middle of the week, read a Gospel, get up early to pray or pray about and with the saint of the week. One give-up: Giving up something for Lent has been part of the Church almost since the beginning. Just make sure it is something that lets you feel the deprivation and is at least a little bit challenging. For example: fast from fault finding and nagging, or fast from a critical tongue or a closed mind, give up fast food and donate the money you save to our brothers and sisters in need at All Saints Catholic Church. ~Amy Whittenberger Stewardship Summary Budget for fiscal year end 6/30/15: $1,725,321 ******** Budget for 7/1/14 through 2/15/15: $1,125,827 Actual for 7/1/14 through 2/15/15: $1,127,941 ******** Budget for week ending 2/15/15: $27,701 Actual for week ending 2/15/15: $36,852 (includes generous stock donations) The Finance Council Has Begun The Budget Process For The 2015-2016 Fiscal Year It is not too late to support our mission and ministries through a stewardship commitment. Know that your contributions are used responsibly, strategically and prayerfully to balance the needs of our parish and to reach beyond our doors to our wider community. There is power, a mighty power, when together, we offer our time, talent and treasure to help build the Kingdom of God. Your increased gifts for 2015 will support the: formation of intentional disciples by expanding adult lifelong faith formation and evangelization efforts; † education and formation of our children and youth by providing additional resources for our day school and child and youth ministries; † ongoing maintenance of our facilities, campus, and technology capabilities. † Our parish community is deeply grateful for the generous gifts received to date. w w w. s t d o m i n i c . n e t Thank You! On behalf of our teaching staff, I wish to thank the members of St. Dominic Catholic Parish for their generous support. Without your prayers and dedication to the mission of Jesus Christ, we would not be able to consistently host the Sustaining the Mission event like we did this past Thursday. We graciously host this event twice each year in our PAAC. This event provides a day of faith formation for 215 teachers and administrators in our corner of the archdiocese. Likewise, we hosted 255 teachers and administrators on Friday, for the District 4 Literacy Day, a day of professional development. With your help, we are carving out a name of humble excellence and dedication to the Catholic faith among our counterparts in the Archdiocese. ~Mrs. Jill A. Fischer, Principal 5 Our Students Thank You! Dear Parishioners of St. Dominic Catholic Parish, Thank you for all of the contributions you have made over the years and the support you have given to our parish. With your help, you have made our school a better place with new technology, a great gym, and a fantastic performing arts and activity center! The new gym has been great! It brings lots of fun and entertainment to the weekends! The performing arts center is great for school dances and school plays and it's a lot better than the old gym! One of the benefits of going to St. Dominic Catholic School is that we are able to get a great education with the freedom of practicing our faith. Getting a Catholic education is key to me. During stressful times, it is always good to know that I will always have God to turn to or Father Dave and Father Brad. It is also nice to go to Mass every Wednesday. Other students I have talked to over the years have said that they have been greatly prepared for the rigorous courses in high school. He grew strong in faith and close to God through this time away. In Lent, the Church calls each of us to strengthen our relationship with God, to pray and fast, and to set ourselves apart from the world in small ways, as we prepare to renew our baptismal promises at Easter. These forty days invite us to recognize how we have gone astray from God’s call for our lives, and to renew our sense of our identity as disciples. As a family, think about how Lent can help you grow closer to God. w w w. s t d o m i n i c . n e t 6 Junior High (7th & 8th graders) SOC - Summer Outreach Camp Meeting on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:00 pm in the Marcy Center. Hunger and thirst seem to be rare in our lives. When we’re starving we have instant access to the refrigerator or pantry. When we’re thirsty we find satisfaction in a soda or other beverage. Families of growing children know the increase in weekly food bills. Hunger and thirst rarely last long in our lives since we can satiate that desire at any moment. Testimony of All Saints’ Parish Recipient All Saints Parish is located in one of the poorest areas of Milwaukee. For them, poverty is not abstract but real. They know families and individuals who go hungry every month, families who depend on their meal program, and food pantry to survive. The community is thankful for the opportunity to serve people in need. All Saints community feels compelled by Jesus to be his living heroes in the community making a difference in people’s lives. Ruth takes her 11 year old grandson to the meal program three times a week. “I like the order and sense of calm. The staff has great respect for us and the food is very good. The food is nutritious and we get fresh fruit and whole grain bread.” Not only are their physical needs for food and drink met but they are served by dedicated staff who give them respect and love. Recipients of the care at All Saints Parish gather 3 times a week for the hot meal program and to eat with others. They form community, they share their lives and their hunger for a family experience is nourished also. All Saints Parish is a living example of heroes in everyday life, people serving others without reward. Our Challenge What would Jesus want of us? What is He calling us to do? How can we live the corporal work of mercy, “feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty”? In addition to collecting money throughout Lent and competing with the hero teams of disciples, we will collect food items for the food pantry at All Saints. Items most needed are breakfast cereals, pastas, canned veggies and soups. We ask that the heroes of St. Dominic Catholic Church be generous. Place your food items on the weekend of Feb. 28/March 1 in the food bins located in the north narthex. Jesus, on the occasion of feeding the multitudes on the mountain, transformed a few loaves of bread and several fish into a feast for the entire thousands who gathered in his presence. When communities come together to care for others, we replicate what Jesus did for those around him. our Superhero Almsgiving Challenge Our teams of disciple sidekicks: Avengers (wee ones to Grade 5), Guardians of the Galaxy (Grade 6-through high school seniors), Justice League (Adults) and the Fantastic Four (Fr. Dave, Fr. Brad, Deacons Larry and Greg) will compete to collect the most money during Lent for All Saints. Jars will be available in the front of the church next to the Ambo or in the School. Any money that come in without a specified group will be placed in the Fantastic Four Jars. Our goal: $30.000 to help All Saints in their ministry. Family Activity This week, invite family members to talk about the scriptural passage of Jesus multiplying food for the crowds. What can individuals or families do to help eliminate hunger in our own community? Invite children to take some of their allowance to purchase soup or veggies as their contribution to help All Saints Parish Community Food Pantry. As a family or individual make a shopping list for the All Saints food pantry gift and perhaps offer a prayer for each person who will receive your generous food donation. Pray with the Saints St. Louis of Toulouse was born in France in 1274, the son of Charles II and Mary, daughter of the King of Hungary. From childhood, he was attached to prayer and the corporal works of mercy. As a child, he took food from the palace to feed the poor. He was educated by the Franciscans and his spiritual life continued to grow. He renounced his royal title, passed it on to his younger brother, and studied to become a priest. He became a member of the Franciscans and was then appointed Bishop of Toulouse. He donated 75% of his income to feed the poor and to maintain churches. Every day he invited 25 poor people to this table. He died in 1297 and was canonized in 1317 by Pope John XXII. He was often heard saying: “Jesus Christ is all my riches; he alone is sufficient for me”. St. Louis is one of the first saints we will focus on this week. Saints are the warriors who fought for the faith, founders who brought new life to the church, models of living Christian virtues, courageous men and women who challenged the church to live as Christ lived among the poor, the marginal and rejected of society. Our Prayer St. Louis, thank you for your heroic example of caring for those around you. You reflected Christ’s love and compassion for those who were less fortunate. Give us the spirit of true heroism. Open our eyes to those in need around us. Give us the courage to reach out in love and to be genuine disciples of Christ. We pray daily in the Our Father: “give us this day our daily bread”. We pray that God will care for all his children and provide daily nourishment. We offer our hands and hearts to be that living extension of God’s love in caring for our brothers and sisters. Bless the community of All Saints and the work of their hands. Amen. This Lent, our goal is to raise $30,000 to help All Saints Parish in their ministry. Women of Grace cordially invites you to our next event on Thursday, March 12 in the PAAC Doors open at 6:30 pm, program begins at 7:00 pm Join us, for an exploration into prayer. We will be graced by a panel of women, who will share with us what prayer means to them and how their faith lives have led them to the way they pray today. There will be a question and answer period, as well as time for socializing, with wine, cheese & crackers. *Free will donations will be accepted.* Our panelists include: Jill Fischer – Principal of St. Dominic Catholic School Madeline Gibson – a woman in her 20’s who worked at St. Paul’s in Madison. Her brother is Fr. John Gibson who was ordained last year. Anne Lawinger – a mom of 8, youngest is in 9th grade. Has a very gentle disposition and is full of wisdom. Mary Magnor – a mom of 8, youngest is 13. She is an amazing speaker and mentors lots of moms. She has a son in the seminary.
