Beneficiaries
The Tampa Bay area is the third largest in the USA with over 400,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing
individuals? We take many things for granted when it comes to hearing, but the reality is that
movie theaters, museums, amusement parks, grocery stores, public agencies, and other
businesses rarely have accommodations such as closed captioning for the hearing impaired. As
our population grows older and suffers from hearing loss (like my wife and those that have been
living with this disability for their entire life or recently) we need to make changes.
Divots for the Deaf will benefit three not-for-profit, 501c3 agencies that provide services for the
deaf and hard-of-hearing.
•
Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf
•
Communication Access Inc.

ALDA Suncoast Chapter

National Association of the Deaf
Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf

that helps children and their families from all
over the Pinellas County and Hillsborough
County areas.

Using a combination of Montessori-style
teaching and a visually oriented curriculum,
Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf
provides comprehensive and accredited education to deaf and hard of hearing children, their
siblings and children of deaf adults (CODA) and prepares them for a lifetime of success in the
community.
Proceeds from this event will support educational programs, speech language therapy,
behavioral and occupational therapy services for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

services privately.
CAI fosters collaboration amongst all agencies, associations and organizations that care for and
support individuals in the Bay Area living with hearing loss.
Our effort is ongoing to make the latest information and services available to everyone.
Bringing together providers, caregivers, public personalities, policy makers, and technology
developers, we host various events throughout the year.
Computer-aided transcription services, " also known as “real-time captioning” or Communication
Access Realtime Translation (CART) services is an accommodation that can be delivered on
location or remotely.
It is “the instant translation of the spoken word into English text using a stenotype machine,
notebook computer and realtime software.”
The text produced by the CART service can be displayed on an individual’s computer monitor,
projected onto a screen, combined with a video presentation to appear as captions.

National Association of the Deaf
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is the nation's premier civil rights organization of, by
and for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America.
Established in 1880, the NAD was shaped by deaf leaders who believed in the right of the
American deaf community to use sign language, to congregate on issues important to them, and
to have its interests represented at the national level. These beliefs remain true to this day, with
American Sign Language as a core value.
The advocacy scope of the NAD is broad, covering a lifetime and impacting future generations in
the areas of early intervention, education, employment, health care, technology,
telecommunications, youth leadership, and more – improving the lives of millions of deaf and
hard of hearing Americans. The NAD also carries out its federal advocacy work through coalition
efforts with specialized national deaf and hard of hearing organizations, as well as coalitions
representing national cross-disability organizations.
On the international front, the NAD represents the United States of America to the World
Federation of the Deaf (WFD), an international human rights organization.
