MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 9
APRIL 13, 2015
NOTEWORTHY
In addition to the league’s player and newcomer of the week selections, several conference players had notable performances, and
they include:
Chris Godinez (BU) – Godinez reached base safely eight
times from his leadoff spot in the weekend series at No. 16
Dallas Baptist with two doubles and two home runs, good
for a slash line of .455/.571/1.182. Godinez helped the
Braves to an early lead in all three games. In the opener
Friday, Godinez was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a run
scored. After going 1-for-5 with a double and run scored in
Saturday’s doubleheader opener, Godinez led the Braves to
an 11-6 win in the series finale by going 2-for-3 with a pair of
2-run home runs and two walks. For the season, Godinez is
batting .309 with nine doubles, five home runs and 30 runs
scored in his 28 games.
Jarod Perry (UE) – Perry hit a team-best .438 this week,
leading the Purple Aces in runs (3), hits (7), and stolen bases
(3). He reached base in all four UE games this past week,
extending his on-base streak to 32 games and his hitting
streak to eight consecutive contests. Perry was 1-for-3 in the
Evansville 7-4 win against Southern Indiana on Wednesday,
April 8. The second year Aces outfielder was hit by a pitch in
the first inning of that game, setting the UE program record
for hit by pitches with 42. Perry then collected six hits and
two runs in a weekend series with #20 Missouri State.
Sean Beesley (ILS) – Beesley helped the Redbirds to a
4-0 record over the past week, posting a .375/.444/.500
slash line while hitting safely in all four of the Redbirds’
games. The junior outfielder had two doubles and drove in
a team-high eight runs over the four-game stretch, which
included a three-game sweep of Wichita State, while scoring two runs and stealing two bases. He also played perfect
defense, with 13 putouts and an outfield assist. Beesley
had at least one RBI in all four games, including three in an
8-4 win over Northern Illinois on April 7, and three more in
a 7-2 win over Wichita State on April 10.
Brodie Harkness (UE) – Harkness matched his careerhigh with 8.0 innings pitched on Sunday, April 12 against
#20 Missouri State. The freshman allowed just two runs on
nine hits, not walking a single batter and striking out three
hitters. The left-hander yielded just a two-run home run in
a 2-0 defeat. He retired 10 straight batters in the middle
innings and nine of the last 10 hitters he faced.
Jeffrey Barton (ILS) – Barton earned his first collegiate
victory in Illinois State’s 8-4 win over Northern Illinois on
April 7. Barton pitched five shutout innings in the win over
the Huskies, allowing just three hits and one walk over those
five innings, while striking out four. Barton also pitched two
innings of one-run ball at Wichita State on Sunday, helping
the Redbirds complete a three-game sweep of the Shockers.
Barton allowed one hit and two walks, while striking out four
more, in Sunday’s win.
Ethan Larrison (INS) – Larrison had two strong outings
this past week. Against Eastern Illinois, Larrison started the
fourth inning, and pitched the final four innings to end the
game. Larrison allowed four hits and one earned run, and
retired the Panthers in order in the sixth inning. ISU lost the
contest after an hour and 33 minute rain delay, and the
game was called after the eighth inning due to a lack of
light. Larrison had the longest start of his career on Sunday
against Southern Illinois. The freshman went 6.1 innings,
scattering six hits, allowing one earned run, walking two and
striking out four Salukis.
Aaron Hauge (SIU) – Hauge once again showed why he is
one of the top pitchers in the conference, with a strong eight
inning performance in a win against Indiana State. Facing
the Sycamores in the series opener, Hauge kept SIU in the
game with another quality start. The senior gave up one
earned run in the game, while striking-out seven Sycamore
batters. Hauge improved to 3-3 on the season with the win.

MVC Players and Pitchers of the Week are selected each week during
the baseball season. The players are announced on Monday afternoon and appear in a weekly press release. Nominees are provided
by each school’s sports information contact and voted on by a panel
appointed by the league office.
Jacob Hayes (INS) – Hayes had one of his most productive
weeks in Sycamore blue. Hayes finished the week with a .526
batting average along with three home runs in four games.
Hayes posted a slash line of .526/.609/1.000 after drawing
four walks throughout the week. Hayes was able to create
some offense on his own, stealing five bases in five attempts.
He finished with 14 in all of last season, and is up to eight
in 2015. After the 10-hit week, Hayes raised his average by
.51 points to .272 and leads the team with five home runs.
Justin Paulsen (MSU) – Paulsen led the Bears with a .583
(7-for-12) batting average, logging multi-hit games in each of
the Bears’ three MVC wins as part of MSU’s first road sweep
in conference play since 2009. Paulsen, who recorded a
team-high six hits in 10 at-bats against UE, scored three runs
with two hits and a pair of walks in five plate appearances
in Friday’s 13-2 series-opening win, then hit his club-leading
fourth home run and singled to match a career high with
three RBIs in game two, an eventual 7-5 MSU victory. The
sophomore capped his week with another two-hit effort in
Sunday’s finale, a 2-0 Bears’ win.
Parker Osborne (SIU) – Osborne had one of the best weeks
of his Saluki career against Arkansas State and Indiana State.
The senior from Chandler, Ariz., started four of five games
for SIU, and had a .500 batting average in the stretch. His
best performance of the week came in the series opener
between Southern and Indiana State. Osborne went 4-for-4
with a triple and two RBI. In the game of the series, Osborne
went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and another pair of RBI.
His performances in those two games helped SIU win their
first MVC series since 2013.

Facing Conference Leaders
Home Winning Streak Ends
From One Ranked Team to Another
Patriots On Base Frequently
Starting a New Streak
The Norman Impact
Bradley ranks among the nation’s leaders with 18 wins away from home
this season and the Braves have built their away record against some tough
competition. Ten of Bradley’s 13 NCAA DI opponents finished this weekend
among the top three in their respective league standings. Bradley is 5-2
against teams currently sitting atop their league standings. The Braves won
2-of-3 games in New Orleans against OVC leader SEMO, 2-of-3 games at
SoCon leader Mercer and a 5-2 decision March 25 at Big Ten leading Iowa.
The nation’s longest home winning streak came to a close in game two
of a double-header versus Bradley on Saturday, as Dallas Baptist fell
11-6 to the Braves. Dating back to a three-game sweep of Southern
Illinois to conclude the regular season last year, the Patriots had won
17 straight games at Horner Ballpark. In the 17 game win streak, the
Patriots outscored their opponents 163-50 and scored in double-digits
on nine different occasions.
Saturday’s 11-6 win at No. 16 Dallas Baptist in the series finale was Bradley’s first win against a
nationally-ranked opponent since a 6-5 win against No. 10 Wichita State April 1, 2007, at Dozer
Park. Bradley will try for two-straight wins against top-25 competition when the Braves host No
15 Iowa, the Big Ten Conference leader, Tuesday, at Dozer Park. Tuesday’s game will be the first
of four home games for this week for the Braves, who will visit Northern Illinois Wednesday,
before returning home to host Wichita State in a three-game weekend Valley series at Dozer Park.
After seeing his league-leading, 14-game hitting streak come to an end with an 0-for-4 showing
Friday at No. 16 Dallas Baptist, sophomore third baseman Spencer Gaa started a new streak
with a vengance by going 6-for-10 with two doubles and a home run in Saturday’s doubleheader
against the Patriots. Gaa is now batting .434 in his 13 games.
Offensive Outburst
Bradley enjoyed an offensive outburst against what was The Valley’s top pitching staff entering the
weekend. During Saturday’s doubleheader split at Dallas Baptist, Bradley banged out 26 hits and
after a 16-7 loss in the opener, the Braves earned an 11-6 win in the nightcap to become the first
team to score in double-figures against the Patriots in 46 games dating to last season. The Patriots
ranked 26th nationally with a 2.88 ERA before giving up 21 runs in three games to the Braves.

Through 33 games this year, the Patriots have posted a team on-base percentage of .401.
Behind DBU’s rapid rate of getting on-base are four Patriots with on-base percentages above
.400 including Drew Turbin (.494), Tagg Duce (.426), Camden Duzenack (.420), and Justin Wall
(.402). Turbin’s .494 mark is closing in on the highest on-base percentage in the program’s NCAA
Division I history, which belongs to Tyler Robbins, who posted a .510 on-base percentage in 2011.
The Patriots return to Norman, Okla., this Tuesday for a mid-week game for the first time since
April 29, 2014. That date can be marked as a defining moment for both Joseph Shaw and Camden
Duzenack. In last year’s game at Oklahoma, Shaw made the transition from the back-end of the
bullpen to become a starting pitcher and responded with six shutout innings, while retiring the
first 13 batters he faced. Camden Duzenack also made his first career start at shortstop that
night and has made 51 consecutive starts as the Patriots’ shortstop since then.
Sooners’ Boost
Both Shaw and Duzenack would play key roles down the stretch run last year, as Shaw was the
winning pitcher in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament Championship game versus Illinois
State, while Duzenack was named the MVC Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and National
Player of the Week. Since the Patriots’ game at Oklahoma last year in late April, Shaw has posted
an 8-2 record with a 2.95 ERA in 11 starts, while Duzenack has hit .345 in exactly 200 at-bats.

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 9
APRIL 13, 2015
EVANSVILLE (16-15, 5-7 MVC)
Looking Back
The Purple Aces went 1-3 last week including a rainout on Tuesday
against UT-Martin. Evansville won 7-4 against Southern Indiana
on Wednesday. Infielder Jonathan Ramon tied a career-high with
three hits as shortstop, while Shain Showers homered for the fourth
time in five games. UE was then swept by No. 20 Missouri State in
a three-game series at home. Outfielder Josh Jyawook totaled five
hits in the series, running his hitting streak to nine-straight games.
Fellow outfielder Jarod Perry also totaled six hits in the weekend set, extending his on-base
streak to 32 games and hit hitting streak to eight.
Statistically Speaking
Statistically, Evansville is led offensively by Kevin Kaczmarski with a team-best .415 batting average, 39 hits, two triples, 59 total bases, a .628 slugging percentage and a .521
on base percentage this season. Josh Jyawook (.319) is also batting above .300, while
Jonathan Ramon has a team-high five home runs and 26 runs batted in. Right-hander
Conor Gilligan has a team-low 2.08 earned run average. Seven different UE pitchers have
recorded at least one win including four each by left-hander Brodie Harkness and righty
Matt Rodgers. The team is cumulatively hitting .258 this season with a 5.04 team ERA.
Up Next
Evansville has the final game of their five-game homestand when they host SIUE on Tuesday
at Braun Stadium. Evansville will also visit the Indiana Hoosiers on Wednesday. The Aces
then return home for a weekend series with South Alabama.
Seven Up
Illinois State scored seven or more runs in all four of its game
last week, while posting a perfect 4-0 record. The Redbirds had
scored seven or more runs in half (16-of-32) of their games this
year, and have a 14-2 record when putting seven or more runs on
the scoreboard.
Saving the Day
Ryan Koziol spends most of his time stationed at third base, but he has also made 11
relief pitching appearances this year. Two of his best outings came over the weekend, as
he closed out wins over Wichita State on consecutive days, earning his second and third
saves of the year.
Offensive Ranks
Illinois State ranks near the top of the Missouri Valley Conference standings in several
key team offensive statistics, and is currently second in slugging percentage (.436), onbase percentage (.395), runs (216), hits (332), home runs (32) and total bases (492).

MVC BASEBALL WEEKLY RELEASE NO. 9
APRIL 13, 2015
INDIANA STATE (14-19, 4-8 MVC)
Hayes’ Homers
Poll Position
Jacob Hayes hit three home runs over a span of four games, marking the most in a four game span during his career. Robby Ort was
the last Sycamore to accomplish the feat, hitting three home runs
during the 2012 season. Indiana State hit 14 home runs during
2014, and has tied that amount through the first two-thirds of 2015.
On the strength of their longest win streak in six years and a key MVC
series win over Dallas Baptist, the Bears picked up their first top-25 nod
in two seasons last Monday, earning the No. 20 spot in D1Baseball.com’s
poll, as well as the No. 24 position in Baseball America’s College poll. Additionally, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper named MSU as the No. 29 team
in its poll, while the Bears received votes in both USA Today Coaches Poll
and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) polls.
Stopping the Skid
The Sycamores went through one of their coldest streaks of the season in terms of wins last
week. Indiana State had lost five-straight since their ninth inning come-from-behind victory
over Wichita State, marking the longest regular season losing streak under Mitch Hannahs.
The Sycamores look to turn it around against some stiff competition this week, hosting
Indiana during the midweek and then traveling to Dallas Baptist for the weekend series.
Streaks Snapped
Junior third baseman Andy Young had a streak of 21 games reaching base snapped on
Wednesday against Eastern Illinois. Young’s streak dated back to a Feb. 21st loss at Georgia
Tech, but has since started a new streak reaching in all three games against the Salukis.
Junior Jeff Degano had made seven-consecutive quality starts before Friday’s game with
Southern Illinois. Degano gave up 12 hits and four earned runs to SIU, while striking out
10 hitters. Degano has fanned 78 hitters in 2015, and allowed just a .219 batting average.
The four runs given up are the most since his start against Grambling State on opening
weekend at the UL-Monroe Warhawk Classic.

Road to Success
With its series sweep at Evansville last weekend, Missouri State improved to 10-3 in true road
games this spring and stretched its streak of road wins to eight in a row. The streak, which began
on March 15 at Kansas State, represents the Bears’ longest since the 2002 season when Missouri State won 10 straight away from home, March 22-April 19. Since beginning their current
hot stretch, the Bears have hit .315 overall as a team and outscored the opposition 112-51 to
win 15 of 17 games overall.
Hawkins Matches Valley SAC Mark
Senior shortstop Joey Hawkins recorded the 49th sacrifice bunt of his career Saturday at Evansville,
matching the Missouri Vallley Conference all-time record held by Creighton’s Vince Pietro. Hawkins,
the NCAA’s active leader in career SACs, leads the Valley, and the nation, with 16 sacrifices this
season and needs just three more to equal his Missouri State single-season record set last year.
The Whitby, Ontario, native owns three of the top four single-season SAC totals in MSU history.
