Dallas Baptist will be the No. 2 seed after registering a 15-6 MVC record. Bradley and Wichita State both finished with identical 10-11 MVC records, but the Braves won the season series against the Shockers (2-1), making Bradley the No. 3 seed and Wichita State the No. 4 seed. Similarly, Evansville and Indiana State each finished with 8-13 MVC records, but the Purple Aces took two-of-three games in the season series against the Sycamores and will earn the No. 6 seed, making Indiana State the No. 7 seed. Southern Illinois (6-15 MVC) will be the No. 8 seed in this week’s MVC Tournament. Wichita State to Host Wichita State will serve as host for the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship for the 26th time in school history, from May 20-23. The 2015 event will take place at Eck Stadium-Tyler Field, one of the premier college baseball facilities in the country. Eck Stadium has been the home of the Valley Baseball Tournament for 22 of the last 33 seasons. Tournament Top Dog Wichita State boasts 97 MVC Tournament wins, the most in the league, and the Shockers also hold the league’s top winning percentage (.677) in tournament play (minimum 10 games). Just one other team that has played at least 10 games – Indiana State – holds an overall winning record in the MVC Tournament (63-53, .543). The No. 2 seed has claimed 10 tournament titles, while no other seed has won more than four championships. Seed Tournament Championships No. 1 No. 2 No. 3 No. 4 No. 5 No. 6 No. 8 15 10 4 1 2 1 1 Defending? Dallas Baptist looks to defend its title at the 2015 MVC Baseball Championship for the first time in school history. Teams have won back-to-back titles eight times in league history, including three three-peats and one four-peat – Creighton (11-12); Indiana State (83-84); Missouri State (96-97); and Wichita State (87-88; 91-92-93; 98-99-00; 02-03-0405; 08-09). Host Team Success Dating back to 1981, host institutions have been the tournament champion 14 times in 34 years, most recently in 2011 (Creighton), while they have been the tournament runnerup an additional seven times. Wichita State and Creighton are the only tournament hosts to have ever won on their home fields. Speaking of the Host Wichita State has been a hot team at Eck Stadium recently, as the Shockers have won their last nine games at home, dating back to April 24. In fact, the last team to beat Wichita State on its home field was Illinois State, which the Shockers will face in their opening game of the MVC Tournament on Wednesday evening. Watch the Tournament Fans can follow the MVC Baseball Championship on ESPN3 (www.espn3.com) for all games played May 20-23. ESPN3 – ESPN’s web-based platform – has 85 million unique users and an additional 21 million unique users on college campuses and military bases. Indianapolis-based WebStream Productions will produce all 13 (or 15, including if-necessary games) of the tournament for ESPN3. All games can be seen exclusively live on ESPN3. Watch online at ESPN3.com, WatchESPN on your computer, tablet or mobile device. Tight Races Since the start of the 21-game conference schedule in 2010 (three-game series), the top two places in the regular-season standings have been separated by just one game in every year except two – in 2013 when firstplace Illinois State had a three-game lead over second-place Creighton heading into the MVC Baseball Tournament – and again this season, as Missouri State claimed the regular-season title with a three-game lead over Dallas Baptist. Bear Down Missouri State’s 18-3 (.857) league mark in 2015 represents its best in 25 MVC seasons, as well as the top finish for any Valley regularseason champion since Wichita State went 28-4 in 2004 (.875). Over the Hill Missouri State (41-10) and Dallas Baptist (4111) have passed the 40-win plateau this season, as just 14 NCAA Division I teams have accomplished the feat already this season. The Bears have posted 40 or more wins six times since in the last 25 seasons (1991, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2012 and 2015), with the most wins (43) coming in 2002. Missouri State’s 41-10 (.804) winning percentage is the Bears’ best since joining the Missouri Valley Conference. The .804 overall efficiency is also the seventh highest in Valley history over the last 25 seasons. Since joining the Division I ranks in 2004, Dallas Baptist has had 30+ wins in a season in all but one year (2010), but the Patriots reached the 40-win mark during the regular-season for the first time since becoming a NCAA DI program. Dallas Baptist also won 40 or more games in 2011, 2012 and 2014, but each of those seasons included postseason play. 30 Rock Bradley surpassed 30 wins for the seventh time in the last 25 seasons, and the first time since 2007, after the Braves finished regularseason play at 32-18. Bradley’s .640 overall winning percentage is the third highest since the 1991 season. Rank and File Both Missouri State and Dallas Baptist remain in numerous top-25 polls entering this week. The Baseball America poll holds the highest ranking for both teams, as the Bears check in at No. 8, while the Patriots rank No. 11. Bradley is also receiving votes in the latest (May 11) NCBWA poll. BRADLEY • DALLAS BAPTIST • EVANSVILLE • ILLINOIS STATE • INDIANA STATE • MISSOURI STATE • SOUTHERN ILLINOIS • WICHITA STATE MVC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT RELEASE MAY 18, 2015 Streaking Missouri State is currently riding a 12-game winning streak, its longest since the 1999 season. The Bears 12 consecutive wins rank as the third best active streak in the nation, joining Miami (Fla.) and St. John’s. Only Illinois (26) and Southern Miss (13) have longer active winning streaks than Missouri State. Road Warriors Missouri State’s 18-4 (.818) road record is the nation’s third-best winning percentage in away games this season. The Bears are one of just five teams to have lost four or fewer games on the road in 2015. Valley RPI Ranks No. 5 According to the latest RPI update from WarrenNolan.com (May 18), the Missouri Valley Conference ranks No. 5 amongst 32 leagues, up one position from last week. Three of the Power-Five conferences (SEC, ACC and Pac-12) hold three of the top five positions, while the American Athletic Conference is the only non-Power Five league ahead of the MVC. The Valley ranks ahead of both the Big 12 (6th) and the Big Ten (7th) in terms of conference RPI. Three in RPI’s Top-25 Three league teams continue to rank in the top-25 of the RPI, led by Dallas Baptist (No. 1), Missouri State (No. 8) and Bradley (No. 21). Another two teams, Indiana State (No. 96) and Evansville (No. 98), also rank in the RPI’s top-100. The Company We Keep With Dallas Baptist (No. 1) and Missouri State (No. 8) each in the RPI’s top-eight, the Missouri Valley Conference trails only the SEC (No. 5 LSU, No. 6 Florida and No. 7 Texas A&M), which has three teams in the RPI’s topeight. The Valley is the only other league to have at least two teams in the RPI’s top-eight. Marginal Dallas Baptist (+3.1, T-10th) and Missouri State (+3.1, T-10th) both rank in the nation’s top-10 in scoring margin. The Patriots and Bears are two of 12 teams that have an average winning margin of 3.0 or higher. STATE • INDIANA STATE • MISSOURI STATE • SOUTHERN ILLINOIS • WICHITA STATE MVC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT RELEASE MAY 18, 2015 NOTEWORTHY In addition to the league’s player and newcomer of the week selections, several conference players had notable performances, and they include: Camden Duzenack (DBU) – Duzenack led the Patriots with a .429 average (6-for-14) last week. Duzenack was also tops on the team with a .500 on-base percentage and .571 slugging percentage. The Patriots’ short stop ripped two doubles over the week and also collected three RBI. In the field, Duzenack made only one error in 15 chances. Mason Snyder (ILS) – Snyder was solid in the final games of his career at Duffy Bass Field over the weekend as the senior infielder posted a slash line of .333/455/.667 over a three-game stretch against Indiana State. Snyder’s biggest hit was a two-run home run in the eighth inning in the second game of a doubleheader Friday, giving the Redbirds two key insurance runs the Redbirds needed, as Indiana State got both of those runs back in the ninth, in an eventual 5-4 Illinois State win. For the season, Snyder is slashing .302/.418/.471 with 14 doubles, six home runs and 41 RBIs. Connor McClain (INS) – McClain started all four games for the Sycamores the last week, earning six hits. McClain a pair of two-hit contests to go with four runs scored and two RBI. In the finale with Illinois State McClain scored two runs, which proved to be the difference in the 5-3 10-inning affair which dropped Illinois State from a potential No. 3 seed in the Valley Tournament. Spencer Johnson (MSU) – Johnson led the red-hot Bears with a .583 (7-for-12) batting average last week to help MSU clinch its fourth Valley title with a three-game sweep of Bradley. Johnson doubled four times in the series, scoring three runs while driving in four more. The Springfield, Mo., native reached base safely in each of his five plate appearances in Saturday’s 9-2 win, going 4-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and three RBIs. He also went 2-for-4 with a walk in Sunday’s regular-season finale, doubling home another run as part of MSU’s six-run fourth inning that put the game out of reach. Brandon Koch (DBU) – Koch went 1-0 with one save and a 1.80 ERA in his three appearances last week. In a 2-1 win over Wichita State on Thursday, Koch earned his 14th save of the season, as he came on the eighth inning to close out the Shockers the rest of the way. In the rubber match of a three-game series with Wichita State on Sunday, Koch came out of the pen in the seventh and worked three scoreless innings to earn the win. Over the final two innings, Koch recorded the final six outs by strikeout. Will Headean (ILS) – Headean pitched the Redbirds to a win over Indiana State on Friday to help the Redbirds split a doubleheader with the visiting Sycamores. Headean scattered five hits and allowed two runs (only one earned) over seven innings. He walked four and struck out three in the Redbirds’ 5-4 victory. For the season, Headean is 5-4 with a 3.65 ERA and 85 strikeouts in 88.2 innings of work. Austin Conway (INS) – Making two appearances out of the Indiana State bullpen, Austin Conway earned a save and a win last week. In his four innings pitched, Conway gave up one hit, a single in the 10th inning against Illinois State. In the opener with the Redbirds, Conway pitched the last 1.1 innings, striking out two. It marks the first time that a pitcher has earned a win and a save in the same week since Ryan Keaffaber did it on the week of Mar. 8-14, 2014. Keaffaber transitioned to a starter and won his contest after throwing in 6.1 innings against Canisius. Connor McFadden (SIU) – McFadden gave Southern Illinois two strong innings out of the bullpen in SIU’s 9-2 loss at St. John’s. McFadden held the Red Storm hitless in his two innings of work while striking out three batters and only giving up one walk. Taylor Goshen (WSU) – Goshen made two appearances out of the bullpen for the Shockers against Dallas Baptist. On Thursday, he went 1.2 shutout innings with no hits and four strikeouts. On Friday, he earned the win and went 3.1 shutout innings with no hits and four strikeouts. The tie for third and No. 3 seed both are the best for the Braves since 2007 and mark just the third time the Braves have finished as high as third in the league standings since their second-place finish in 1987. Dallas Baptist finished the regular season at 41-11, making it the first time in school history that the Patriots have won 40 games in the regular season. On the road, Dallas Baptist posted the second most total wins in the nation, as the Patriots went 19-7 with a .731 win percentage. At home, the Patriots compiled a 22-4 record and an .846 win percentage, making it the club’s best win percentage at home since the 2012 team went 25-3 with a .893 win percentage at home. Ashbeck Named Olerud Award Semifinalist Hurlers’ Hoopla Bradley junior P/DH Elliot Ashbeck was named one of 21 semifinalists for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award last Thursday night. Ashbeck leads the 21 semifinalists with 10 pitching wins and he will enter the MVC Tournament at 10-4 with a 3.34 ERA as Bradley’s No. 1 starter. Ashbeck is Bradley’s primary designated hitter when he is not pitching. With two doubles and three RBI in Bradley’s regular-season finale, Ashbeck is batting .291 and leads the Braves with 12 doubles and 29 RBI, despite hitting in just 32 of Bradley’s 50 games. The Patriots’ 2015 pitching staff has recorded one of the finest seasons in the program’s NCAA Division I history, dating back to 2004. With a staff ERA of 3.47, only the 2004 club’s 3.28 ERA ranks better than this year. Leading the way for the Patriots’ staff is the team’s first 10-game winner since 2011 in Joseph Shaw and a closer in Brandon Koch, who is just three saves away from establishing both a new all-time career saves record and the single-season saves record at Dallas Baptist. Godinez Returns to Action Success of Salters After missing six-straight games with a hamstring injury suffered April 29 at Milwaukee, Bradley leadoff hitter and second baseman Chris Godinez returned to action during last weekend’s series at Missouri State. Godinez was the DH in the first two games of the Missouri State series, before returning to second base for Saturday’s series finale. He was 2-for-7 with a double during the series, but continued to show a remarkable eye at the plate by drawing five more walks. Godinez has reached base safely in 26 consecutive games, including the last 10 games with at least one walk. In his last 10 games, Godinez has drawn 19 walks, helping him to a .492 on-base percentage. Godinez’ 40 walks on the season equal the second-most in Bradley history, just one shy of the school-record 41 free passes to Jeff Fry in 1976. Kaczmarski leads the Purple Aces in batting average, hits (85), doubles (19), triples (nine), runs batted in (55), total bases (134), slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and stolen bases (13). He put together a career-high 22-game hitting streak earlier this season and has only gone hitless in five of his 44 games played this spring. Statistically Speaking Statistically, Evansville is led offensively by outfielder Kevin Kaczmarski. His .478 batting average, 85 hits, 19 doubles, nine triples, 55 RBI, 134 total bases, .753 slugging percentage, .554 on-base percentage and 13 stolen bases are all team-highs. Eight different Evansville pitchers have recorded at least one win including seven from Billo and six by left-hander Brodie Harkness. The team is cumulatively hitting .279 this season with a 4.78 team ERA. ILLINOIS STATE (27-25, 9-12 MVC) Third Time’s the Charm? Illinois State has advanced to the championship game of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in each of the past two seasons, and will look to do so again when it heads to Wichita this week for the league tournament. The Redbirds came up short in the title game in both of those previous attempts, but are hoping to find out if the third time is a charm this week. Record Hunting Illinois State junior left-hander Jacob Hendren will be searching for his 11th win of the season when he gets the start against Wichita State in the Redbirds’ opening game of the MVC Tournament Wednesday. Hendren is currently tied with two others for Illinois State’s single-season wins record. He is also currently tied for the Valley lead in wins this year. Senior Sendoff Illinois State bid farewell to four players who earned their degrees this spring when it hosted Indiana State in the final game of a three-game series on Saturday. Indiana State defeated Illinois State 5-3 in 10 innings at Duffy Bass Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss cost the Redbirds a chance at the No. 3 seed in this week’s MVC Tournament. Instead with the loss, Illinois State is the No. 5 seed and will face host and No. 4 seed Wichita State. Missouri State locked up its fourth regular-season Valley title with its sweep of Bradley and its eighth conference championship overall under the direction of head coach Keith Guttin. Additionally, the Bears 18-3 (.857) league mark represents its best in 25 MVC seasons, as well as the top finish for any Valley champ since Wichita State went 28-4 in 2004 (.875). Tourney Time One for the Money In the series opening game with the Redbirds, all nine Indiana State starters had one hit in the 3-0 victory. Andy Young and Jacob Hayes made their hits hurt the most, with each connecting for a solo home run in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively. The other Indiana State run came in the ninth inning as Kaden Moore’s single drove in a run to push the lead to 3-0. It is the third time this season that all nine starters have had at least one hit, but the first time that no one registered a multi-hit contest. Horseshoes and Hand Grenades The Sycamores have come on strong as of late, going 12-5 in their last 17 games. During those 12 wins, seven have come in Indiana State’s last at bat, including four walk-off wins at Bob Warn Field. Of the last 17 games, 16 have been decided by three runs or less. The only game that was not a close contest was an 8-2 victory over SIUE. Nine of the 12 wins were earned by the Sycamore bullpen, and Indiana State picked up five saves during that run.
