The Newsletter of the Philadelphia Area Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America July Meeting: July/August/September 2009 Let's try punchneedle embroidery! With Patty Smith Gardner We will make a small topiary ornament in this class. This ornament is simple and easy to do. You will need to know the “basics” of how to thread and use a punchneedle. If anyone wants to learn the basics, I will be available 45 minutes before the meeting for a quick lesson or refresher. You will need the Cameo Ultra punch needle with the Small and Medium Tips and a 7” locking lip hoop for this piece. I will bring along punchneedle sets and hoops for anyone to borrow for this class, and if you want to purchase one at the end of the program you can do so (*details below) or just return them to me after class. No obligation, this is just for you to give it a try! The kit will contain the fabric pre-printed with the design, all the needed threads to make the ornament, the cardboard oval and padding for backing, and felt for finishing. Kit cost: $10. (no coupon; just bring along cash or check to meeting) Bring: embroidery scissors, Fabric scissors, Cameo punchneedle set, 7” locking lip hoop, and usual lighting and magnification if you need it. Wednesday, July 22, 7 PM– St. Lukes Actual size of finished ornament is 5” x 4” If you wish to make this a Christmas Topiary Ornament, as shown below, you will need to bring: • a skein of #5 pearl cotton in red for the berries • gold thread for the pot- DMC light gold 3 strand floss, on a spool as pictured below; it is available at JoAnn fabrics or Michaels. • any thin red ribbon you wish for trimming the tree. The quilts represent three specific regional groups, each with its own distinctive features, drawn from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, from Midwestern communities and from Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. Each of these Amish communities produces unique quilts that reflect the availability of materials, influences from non-Amish neighbors, and the relative conservatism of individual communities as determined by their Ordnung, or community guidelines. Finishing fabric will be included in the kit but a six inch, small embroidery of your own, could be placed on the back. Any color, any technique, a small workshop piece would look great. For this reason the design is considered a “green” project. The kit includes the design on linen fabric; Appleton yarns, finishing fabric, needles, and instruction booklet with color photograph. Cost for each session, $20. First session was the pineapple in June. Additional two classes, Saturday, September 19, 2009, 10:00am and Saturday, October 17, 2009, 10:00am, at Lima Estates. Call Pat for additional information.
