I enjoy showing calves and cooking. 4-H Club: Liscomb Lively Laborers Year in School: 7th Grade School: BCLUW Middle School Favorite Project: Cow/Calf Pair County Council Upcoming Activities: The following tentative dates were discussed for upcoming activities: February 16, 2014 - Bowling party March 1, 2014 – Dodgeball Tournament April 5, 2014 – Animal Rescue League activity Sara Duncan, County Council Leader The regular meeting of the Marshall County 4-H Council was held on Sunday, December 1, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order by Blake Edler and Lauren Mosher. Under new business, members discussed the upcoming 4-H 5K to be held on April 12 at the Marshall County Fairgrounds. Checking runners in, helping set up the day before and emceeing the event were areas where members are needed. The canned food drive currently had 105 items to be donated to the House of Compassion and would continue through the middle of December. Following the meeting, County Council members enjoyed a pizza party and gift exchange. The next meeting will be held on January 6, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Leah Mosher MISSION STATEMENT 4-H EMPOWERS YOUTH TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL WORKING Knitting Workshop: Offered to 5th-12th graders Tuesday Evenings: 1st session: January 28th at 6:00-7:30pm 2nd session: February 4th at 6:00-7:30pm 3rd session: February 11th at 6:00-7:30pm 4th session: February 18th at 6:00-7:30pm Final session: February 25th at 6:00-7:30pm Marshall County Extension and Outreach will be partnering with Coylie Ries and will be hosting Beginner Knitting workshops. Grades 5th through 12th are invited to participate in 5, one and half hour sessions dedicated to knitting. No previous experience is needed. During the 5 sessions students will be able to complete one project. There are only ten openings and it is a first come first serve basis with a fee of $30, to cover the cost of supplies. Please call the extension office (641-752-1551) to sign up at by Tueseday, January 21st open until 5:00pm. Join us to learn about knitting techniques and the ability to complete a knitting project perfect for judging at the Central Iowa Fair. 1st ANNUAL CLOVER RUN/WALK APRIL 12TH, 2014 Benefitting MARSHALL COUNTY 4 H Mark your calendars for Marshall County 4-H to host its First Annual 5K on April 12th of 2014. This is a 5K Clover Run/Walk that will help fundraise money for our Marshall County 4-H youth scholarships, youth development, and activities. The race will take place at Central Iowa Fairgrounds. Be a Sponsor! Mark your calendar for May 3-4, 2014. Sullivan’s Supply Stock Show University Graduate program is coming the Marshalltown! Yes we got it!!! What a wonderful opportunity for not only beef members but their parents, 4-H leaders, friends, even bottle bucket calf exhibitors, anyone to come and learn just about everything you need to know to show a beef animal. It is open to anyone from anywhere to come and attend. It is a two day program that is FREE! You can come and watch and learn or better yet, bring your steer or heifer and work one on one with the experts. They will cover daily care, feed rations, show day care, grooming and clipping, showmanship and so much more. It just doesn’t get any better than this. More details coming. If you are wanting to learn and grow in this project I can’t stress enough to you how important and beneficial this program is. We hope to see each and every Marshall County Beef member there along with your siblings, friends, family and anyone else who wants to learn. More details coming soon. REMINDER: 4-H Clubs – Have you decided what carnival game your club is going to sponsor at this year’s fair on Saturday? It’s NOT too late to: Give the Gift of Grain A donation of grain is an easy way for Iowa farm families to show their support for the 4-H program and the Central Iowa Fair make sure 4-H continues for future generations.Giving grain instead of cash can also help farmers save on selfemployment, federal income and state income taxes.**Always consult your professional tax or legal advisors to determine tax implications prior to making a gift of grain. Four easy steps for giving the gift of grain: Deliver the grain to your local elevator or co-op. Transfer the grain to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Ask for a warehouse receipt showing the Iowa 4-H Foundation as the owner. Contact the 4-H Foundation (515-294-1537 or [email protected]) and tell them where the grain is stored. The Foundation will order the sale of the grain with the original sales invoice. It will run from April 2014 through October 2014. More information to come! REMINDER: Francis Dunn & Marshall County Pork Producers Scholarships. We'll be offering 2 $500 scholarships. Guidelines for the scholarships are as follows: Future or present Iowa State University student studying in the field of agriculture. Demonstrated academic potential as well as good character and leadership abilities. Full time student. Resident of Marshall county. Financial need may be a consideration for these awards. During the 5 sessions students will be able to complete three projects: four quilt blocks which can become a pillow, small bag, and larger bag, excellent to take to the fair. There are only ten openings and it is a first come first serve basis with a fee of $30, to cover the cost of supplies.
