In the Southern Hemisphere, May is autumn and in the Northern Hemisphere it's spring. Did you know that May is a special month for a variety of reasons in other cultures? For the Roman Catholics, it's honoring the Virgin Mary; for Buddhists May marks the Buddha’s enlightenment; and for the early Pagan cultures, May is a tribute to Maia, which embrace “growth” and “increase of knowledge.” This month will be full of special events, new activities, and different ways to increase our muscle memory. Come join us as we celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day. During this time, we will encourage your loved ones to enjoy the warmer weather with the Programming Department, and participate in a variety of activities and events. We look forward to spending time with your loved ones in our beautiful garden, located on the property. As always, we offer exercise, brain games, discussion groups, baking clubs, and crafts. Individualized programs are also available for residents who prefer more independent activities. “You are as welcome as the flowers in May.” - Charles Macklin Mountainview Gardens: Assisted Living Memory Care May Newsletter April Highlights Mason Jar Creations Stain Glass Sun Catchers Dog Therapy Page 2 Page 3 Volume: 5 May 2015 April Highlights Easter Egg Hunt Craft Walking Group Creative Notions Mountainview Gardens: Assisted Living Memory Care May Newsletter April Special Events: Yomenco with Bruce Richard Stillman Entertains Clay Art Page 4 Page 5 Volume: 5 May 2015 Helpful Visiting Tips According to the Alzheimer’s Association, visiting a loved one in an assisted living community can cause a variety of emotions. It can be a rewarding and joyful experience, or it could sadden or frustrate you, depending on the response of your loved one. Here on the Assisted Living Memory Care neighborhood, we understand just how important family visits are, and recognize how difficult it can be to connect with your loved ones. Therefore, to help you have a memorable experience we have created a list of successful activities that you might like to try during your next visit. Take a walk outside to look at the flowers and trees Sit outside and talk or have a cold drink Read a book, the newspaper or a magazine article aloud Look through a magazine pictures together and talk about what you see Read letters from family and friends Help write a letter to a family member or friend Find a pen pal and help correspond with this new friend Create a poster from pictures cut from old magazines Listen to familiar music Find items related to the season or upcoming holiday to talk about Do a crossword puzzle or word search together Go “window shopping” in a fancy mail order catalog, and dream about what you would buy. Bring in a favorite recipe and discuss favorite foods Play along with a TV game show Look at a travel book or brochure to reminisce about past vacations Talk about what you both would do if you had a million dollars To learn more about Alzheimer’s and Dementia and how you can engage in meaningful activities with your loved one, visit alz.org.
