BACKGROUND
The Maudsley model was developed at the Maudsley hospital in London and was
manualised in 2001. The model integrates ideas from a number of family therapy
approaches but has the basic premise that families have the resources to help their child
recover from anorexia nervosa in the home setting. The model is suitable for adolescents
with Anorexia Nervosa with a short course of illness (less than 3 years). It is an outpatient
treatment that supports the family over a 1 year period. There are a number of overseas
randomised control trials that support the model and at The Children’s Hospital this model
has been implemented since 2002.
WORKSHOP CONTENT
The aim of this workshop will be to provide intensive practical training in the application of
this model including:
 Theoretical background
 Detailed description of each session
 Demonstrations by CHW therapists
 Role play scenarios
 Macro and micro skill development
By the completion of this workshop participants should be able to begin to use the Family
Based Treatment model in their own practice/clinical setting.
This workshop meets the Training Institute for Child and Adolescent Eating Disorders
requirements to be eligible to begin the process to become a certified FBT therapist
(http://train2treat4ed.com).
Prerequisites for the workshop would include:

Experience with eating disorders

Some experience in seeing families

An opportunity to apply the model in clinical practice
