For more than 35 years renowned quilt expert Shelly Zegart has had a mission to bring to the
forefront awareness of quilts as historical record, political mouthpiece, and works of art. This
passion for quilts led her to create the nine-part landmark documentary, “Why Quilts Matter:
History, Art and Politics”. Shelly will bring many quilts to illustrate the messages quilts hold.
Join Shelly as she gives us insights into why quilts have been and continue to be at the center of
American culture. How might you be able to share this documentary that spreads the word about
the importance of quilting to America?

“Make It & Take It” Description
* Bring your own sewing machine with thread; all other supplies will be furnished.
Tissue / Change Purse – Participants will use scraps of fabric to complete this
tissue holder that also acts as a coin change purse. It is complete with a zipper
and a keychain ring. All supplies will be provided.

Class Skill Level Ratings
Beginner: Must be able to thread sewing machine and wind bobbin(s). Must have knowledge of sewing terms, be
able to read a pattern, and be capable of performing basic sewing machine techniques.
Intermediate: Must have good command of sewing skills, knowledge and operation of sewing machine and
sewing techniques, and be able to read and follow pattern instructions without assistance.
Advanced: Must be proficient at most sewing techniques in the subject area, including knowledge of and using
many sewing machine features.
Look for the skill level rating of each class.

Tuesday, April 16
C. You-The Hidden Designer, Understanding
How Fabric & Garment Design Work
Together with Sandy Davis
(Beginner to Intermediate) Lecture
Learn how a garment’s design lines are
combined with a particular fabric to the best
advantage of both. Participants will learn how
different fabrics drape for garments, determine
compatibility of garment patterns and fabrics,
different weaves of fabrics, differentiate fiber
content, what garment ease is, and more. Class
Fee: $10.00 includes: paper for design work
and handouts. This class is a lecture with
samples illustrated.
A. Quick Table Runner with Jennifer Klee
(All Skill Levels)
Choose a holiday, seasonal, or color theme and
create a colorful table runner. The focus fabric
square creates the center of attention while the
backing fabric can make it reversible. Class
Fee: $22.00 includes: pattern and fusible quilt
batting. Project Size: 14 ½ X 48 ¾ -inch.
B. Easy Cushion Corners with Pam Damour
(Intermediate)
Custom cushion covers are easy when you
know all the tricks. Learn how to measure for a
cushion, cut foam, do a Dacron wrap, put in the
zipper, and line up the corners for a perfect fit.
Class Fee: $40.00 includes: fabric for chair pad
and piping, cord for piping, and zipper. Project
Size: 18-inch chair pad.
D. A Sewer’s Best Friend—The Abby Bag
with Kay Wilson (Beginner)
A pin cushion and a scrap bag
all sewed up together in one.
Makes a great gift and always
a big seller at craft shows &
bazaars. Class Fee: $25.00

E. Orion’s Star with Vicki Reiter
(Intermediate)
Participants will use two different techniques to
make this quilt. Use rulers to make perfect
flying geese then use the log cabin pattern to add
strips to the back. The finished blocks are all the
same but depending how it’s arranged can make
each quilt look drastically different. Class Fee:
$40.00 without kit or $85 with kit includes:
flying geese ruler, all fabric, and pattern. Can
also purchase ruler separately for $10. Project
Size: Lap-size quilt.
G. Why Layer Kakes with Mary Pierson
(All Skill Levels)
Participants will use their stash fabric or bundle
of 35 fat quarters or more. At class end, the
collection will be ready to make into 100’s of
different designs. Students will choose from a
variety of designs offered and may start sewing,
time permitting. Class Fee: $45.00 includes:
two rulers and several patterns.
F. Introduction to Paper Piecing with Laurie
Thompson (Intermediate)
Participants will learn the basics of paper-piecing
while constructing a simple star block. Learn
how to achieve perfect points and how the
placement of fabric gives a dimensional effect.
Kit provided will allow participants to complete
an additional three blocks and will be shown
how to put them all together. Class Fee:
$115.00 with kit (must have kit in order to
complete class) includes: book, fabric, ruler,
and paper-piecing paper. Project size:
approximately 24 X 24-inch.
H. Creating Pattern & Texture with Soy Wax
with Pat Sturtzel (Intermediate Skill
Level-no sewing skills needed)
Participants will explore use of Procion MX dyes
to create pattern & texture. Dye chemistry and
color mixing will be discussed during the
process. Class Fee: $46.00 includes: dyes, soy
wax, miscellaneous supplies, use of some tools,
written instructions to continue explorations at
home. Option to purchase a fabric kit for an
additional $25 which includes: 5 yards of a
combination of white and lightly dyed fabrics
instead of purchasing additional materials on
your own.

I. Serger Knit T-Shirt with Marjorie Baker
(Intermediate)
Stretch your serger skills by making this simple
knit T-shirt. Be guided through the construction
of this staple wardrobe item. Basic serger and
coverstitch techniques will be covered as well as
options for hemming without a coverstitch
machine. Class Fee: $15.00 includes: pattern
and fusible knit interfacing. Pattern size:
Women’s XS to XL.
K. The Wild Life with Mary Bauer
(Beginner)
Using fusible applique, decorative stitches, 3-D
details, and faux trapunto, you can make these
crazy patched animals come alive. Class Fee:
$30.00 includes: pre-selected pattern. Can order
additional patterns at $8 each. Choose from
whimsical elephant, hippopotamus or more
sophisticated giraffe or zebra. Project size: sizes
vary but approximately 30 X 40-inch.

J. Small Matsukawa-Bishi with Linda
Griffiths (Intermediate)
This is the retired Pine Bark Diamond Pattern,
symbolizes perseverance. The pine is a symbol
of good fortune. This beautiful flat-diamond
pattern has a puzzle-like appearance. As with
many puzzles this one has a “secret”! Come
discover what it is. Construct the quilt center
during class. Borders and quilting designs will
be discussed. Class Fee: $35.00 includes:
pattern, removable labels and handouts for two
additional sizes. Project size: approximately 30
x 30-inch.
L. Charmed Courthouse Steps with Jennifer
Klee (All Skill Levels)
Try this twist on a traditional pattern using a
charm pack and jelly roll (or equivalents).
Choose the size 6 or 12 blocks and your bordertraditional or piano. Class Fee: $33.00 includes:
pattern and instructions. Project size: 50 X 68inch or 67 X 85-inch.

M. A Tuffet for Your Tootsies with Pam
Damour (Intermediate)
Upholstery 101 has never been more fun. Join
the full day of upholstery how-to’s, while you
create your own upholstered footstool. After
learning how to build a foundation piece,
instructor will demo basics such as web
stretching, spring tying, and the finishing touches
to make the project an heirloom. Class Fee:
$70.00 includes: fabric, wood frame, foam, welt
cord, lining, batting, and tack strip. Project size:
16h X 14 X 16-inch.
O. Jeans Jacket with Peggy Townsend
(Beginner to Intermediate)
Participants will learn to make a jacket like the
one below from an ordinary pair of blue jeans.
Class Fee: $35.00 includes: pattern,
instructions, and hands-on fitting.
P. Castle in the Air with Laurie Thompson
(Beginner)
Participants will learn to construct block with
very thin sashing on point, using a wide variety
of fabrics to create a stunning effect. This class
is great for those fabric hoarders who want to use
up some of their stash. Class Fee: $75.00
without kit or $150 with kit includes: pattern,
1 ½ yards muslin fabric. Project size: 65 X 76inch.
N. Decorative Stitch Thread Painting with
Sandy Davis (Intermediate to Advance)
In this floral sampler wall art project, learn to
manipulate basic built-in decorative stitches to
obtain an abstract realistic look. Using rayon
and metallic threads, you will be “thread
painting” flowers, stems, leaves, and grass by
modifying stitch settings using free motion and
mirror imaging. Different color schemes may be
chosen other than those in photo below. Class
Fee: $50.00 includes: book, batting, stabilizer,
ivory fabric for insert piece, brown fabric for
ground piece. Project size: 11 X 15-inch.

S. Contrary Wife in Kansas bed warmer
/table runner with Rose Sutter
(Advanced)
The combination of two traditional quilt blocks
“The Kansas Star” and the “Contrary Wife” take
on a unique appearance when combined and
turned on point. The use of some quick piecing
methods for both blocks. Learn how to set on
point. There will be alternative size examples
available for inspiration. Class Fee: $30.00
includes: pattern, instructions, ½ square triangle

Q. Spinning Pinwheels with Kay Wilson
(Beginner)
This quilt “spins” to life quickly in contrasting
colors with simple piecing of two alternating
blocks. So much fun to watch as these two easy
blocks become a wonderful quilt that looks
complicated, plus you can almost feel the breeze
it goes so fast. Class Fee: $30.00 includes:
original pattern.
R. French Rose with Vicki Reiter
(Intermediate)
Raw edge applique. This quilt requires a variety
of fabrics in a variety of colors. Roses will be
cut and sewn onto background leaving the raw
edges exposed. When the top is complete you
wash the top and the edges of the roses “fray”
and giving the edges a ragged shabby chic look.
Class Fee: $40.00 includes pattern, or $85
with kit includes: pattern and fabric (3 yards
assorted pastel prints for flower petals appliques,
¼ yard assorted green prints for leaf appliques, 2
yards total background, 3/8 yard solid lilac inner
border, and 1 ¾ yard fabric for outer border.)
Project size: 58-inch square.
T. Ruler Free Twister with Mary Pierson
(All Levels)
This design looks complicated, but it’s very
easy. It can be made without purchasing another
ruler. Student will cut up a charm pack (5”
squares) and arrange the blades on a “design
wall.” Sew everything together using straight
seams look complex –NOT!! Class Fee: $50.00
includes: required book. Teacher will also have
charm packs available for purchase if desired for
$15 per kit.

W. Sew Purely Fine Machine Embroidery
Wall Hanging with Linda Bowles
(Advanced)
Create a whimsical sewing-themed machine
embroidery wall hanging with three Purely Gates
Mylar Embroidery® Swirly Sewing Designs.
Using mylar with machine embroidery creates
the allusion that metallic threads were used,
however the unique Purely Gates digitizing
allows the beauty and sparkle of mylar to show
through without stitching with any metallic
thread. After embroidering, there will be time to
construct the wall hanging. Also learn how to
stylize the bottom border using The Wave Ruler.
Class Fee: $40.00 includes: CD containing
three Purely Gates Mylar Embroidery® Swirly
Sewing Designs (multi-formats), precut fabrics
for wall hanging including backing fabric, two
types of embroidery stabilizers, mylar, batting,
written directions, stitch out print out for each of
the three designs. Project size: 24 X 18-inch.
NOTE: When registering report what brand
and model of embroidery machine along with
the format (JEF, PES, HUS, VIP, etc.) will be
using along with what transfer device will be
using to transfer three designs into embroidery
machine.
U. Scrap Bag Log Cabin with Pat Sturtzel
(All Levels)
This project comes from the instructors family
tradition . They create a quilt for each niece and
nephew for their wedding. The couple chooses
the color for the center square and the squares
get sent out to family members who live from
Vermont to New Mexico and points in between.
Share in this tradition and start your own quilt.
Class Fee: $46.00 includes: bin of fabric strips
for class to share, and instructions. Project size:
options will be available to make your choice of
size of quilt. You will not have time to complete
all blocks for a large quilt, but will develop the
skills to do so on your own.
V. Serger Sampler Pillow with Marjorie
Baker (Intermediate)
This class is a study of serger techniques. The
completed pillows includes the overlock, 2thread flatlock, 3-thread flatlock, rolled edge
stitches and techniques for gathering and
hemming. Create a pretty patchwork pillow to
show off your spiffed up serging skills. Class
Fee: $5.00 includes: pattern, instructions, and
fusible fleece. Project size: 12-inch pillow with
3-inch ruffle.
X. Shark’s Teeth Camisole with Hazel
Bentley (Intermediate)
Participants will learn the heirloom technique of
Shark’s Teeth variation to create a garment that
can be used as an under-top or a summer top.
Class Fee: $25.00 includes: pattern, material,
and thread.

Instructor Biographies
Marjorie Baker from Georgetown, KY, is the State Coordinator for the Kentucky Master Volunteer Clothing Construction
Program. She holds a Master’s Degree in Clothing and Textiles and enjoys sewing clothing and colorful quilting projects. She
has over 30 years of teaching experience in sewing and needlework classes.
Mary Bauer from Crestwood, KY, began sewing at age 10 but made it a passion after retiring in 1999. Learned to quilt in 2003
and all other projects took a back seat. After wining “Best of Show” at the State Fair, she was encouraged to start teaching and
have been fortunate enough to exhibit locally as well as Berea, Knoxville, Paducah, Bloomington, Columbus, and Houston.
Hazel Bentley from Union, KY, is a Martha Pullen Certified teacher as well as a Kentucky Master Clothing Volunteer.
Linda Bowles is the owner of Moore’s Sewing & Learning Center in Louisville, KY. She has been sewing and embroidery
educator for about 12 years, is a member of American Sewing Guild, and has been sewing since she was in grade school.
Pam Damour from Champlain, New York, is known as the “Decorating Diva.” She is co-author of “Pillow Talk” and has over
30 years as in interior designer and sewing professional. She’s a member of SEA, ASG, and AQS. Pam is the host of her own
web show on sewontv.com, “At Home with the Decorating Diva.” She is the producer of 13 how-to DVDs and much more.
Sandy Davis is a licensed Martha Pullen Beginning and Serger teacher, certified sulky teacher, certified Palmer/Pletsch
Beginning and Fit Teacher and certified Kentucky Master Clothing volunteer with 20 years teaching experience.
Linda Griffiths is an award winning quilter, who has exhibited at local, state and national levels. She teaches at the Hardin
County Kentucky Extension Office, numerous quilt shops, Jabez, and KHQS Getaway and offers technique-oriented, unique and
original pattern workshops for guilds and others.
Jennifer Klee from Versailles, KY, learned to sew as a 4-H’er and has never stopped! She taught sewing to 4-H youth and
adults during her 30+ years as a Kentucky Extension Agent, and recently retired.
Vicki Reiter owns a quilt shop in Lawrenceburg, IN, with a friend. Lover of gardening as well as quilting.
Mary Pierson started Original Creations, as an on-the-road mobile quilt shop vending and teaching in 1996. Last year she
opened a quilt shop in historic Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Pat Sturtzel from Louisville, KY, has sewn and made quilts for over 30 years. During the past five years, Pat has been
mentored by Jane Dunnewold, author of several books on art cloth and textile surface design techniques. She teaches a variety
of fiber art processes as a visiting artist in schools and community centers, including work with female refugees.
Rose Sutter from Burlington, KY, started sewing at age nine in 4-H. Devoted full-time efforts to sewing after retiring, making
horse show clothing and quilting for home décor.
Laurie Thompson is currently the co-owner of Quilter’s Garden in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and she has been quilting for over
25 years.
Peggy Townsend from Prospect, KY, is an accomplished seamstress, quilter, and artist. She has won many awards for her work
at the KY State Fair and in KEHA Cultural Arts, and enjoys sharing her knowledge with others and having others learn new
techniques.
Kay Wilson from Ghent, KY, has been quilting since the age of nine. She currently runs a machine quilting business and small
fabric shop. Kay holds quilting classes in several counties in the Northern Kentucky area.
Shelly Zegart, executive producer and host, was a founding director of The Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc. (1981), the
first state documentation project, and The Alliance for American Quilts (1993). Zegart curates exhibitions, lectures
and writes on all aspects of quilt history and aesthetics. Her personal collection was acquired and exhibited by The
Art Institute of Chicago (2002). For the past three years Zegart has worked on producing the nine part documentary
series, “Why Quilts Matter: History, Art, Politics,” which has appeared on more than 200 PBS stations.
