Pattern adaption and dressmaking - an introduction Summary Ever thought about making your own clothes but need a little bit of guidance? This course is designed to give you an introduction to the skills to make garments to fit you. What are the Course Aims? Where can it lead to? By the end of the course learners will be familiar with: Learners have the opportunity to move on to a Creative Crafts (Textiles)course. * Buying a commercial (shop bought) pattern * Understanding the pattern instructions * Altering the pattern to customise the fit * Learn the necessary sewing and construction techniques to complete the garment Learners wanting to make craft items are also welcome. What will I study on this course? Throughout this course the following will be covered: * Buying a first Commercial Pattern (Commercial Patterns are sized differently to shop bought clothes, when buying a pattern buy one or two sizes bigger) * Fabric for garments * Notions (all materials needed for the construction of garments) * Taking body measurements and adjusting patterns to ensure a well-fitting garment * Wearing and design ease in a pattern * Selvedge, grain and bias grain of fabric * Cutting layouts * Seams and seam allowances * Pattern markings and sewing directions * Cutting out, pinning and marking Fabric Week by week the sewing techniques and construction process will be learnt and built upon with the eventual aim of being able to make clothes. Are there any resources or materials required? Are there any other costs? PFAFF Sewing Machines are available at the college however students are welcome to bring their own sewing machine. Any machine will need to be PAT tested by a college technician, a minimum charge will apply and notice is required. Students will be required to bring their own patterns, fabric and a basic sewing kit to include scissors, pins, thread, fabric and your chosen dressmaking pattern, this will be discussed in the first class. Some materials will be available to purchase from the tutor but this is not essential. Please do not purchase anything until confirming the course is going ahead. How will I be assessed?
