Take a Swing at Cystic Fibrosis!
Golfing is a fun way to help our friends
with CF to breathe easier!
The snow has melted, the days are growing longer. This can
mean only one thing! Golf season is near!
Two of our long-standing fundraisers are the golf tournaments
that we host each summer.
We open the season with our Bismarck/Mandan tournament
scheduled for June 5, at Prairie West Golf Course in Mandan.
We close out our season on August 7, with our Fargo/Moorhead
tournament at The Meadows in Moorhead.
These two tournaments are one of the big ways that we help our
friends with cystic fibrosis to breathe easier!
Here are some things that we are looking for:
• Corporate and Individual Sponsors for teams
and tee boxes.

Taco John’s Contributes to
Fight Against CF
Area Taco John’s stores
have been helping area
families fighting cystic
fibrosis for close to two
decades and this year is
no exception. As this is
being written, more than $18,000 has been received from the
Christmas 2014 promotion so far, and more will be coming as
spring progresses.
Taco John’s Nachos Navidad® has many fans throughout the
upper Midwest and holiday sales of this item, combined with
sales of “Whiplash” ornaments, are the driving forces behind
the large donations that have contributed some $200,000 to
CFA since the promotion began.
The promotion was the inspiration of Mike Sartwell, but Mike
is always quick to point out that it couldn’t be a success without
the willing cooperation of so many area Taco John’s store
managers and their staffs. We are very grateful to Mike and all
those affiliated with Taco John’s area stores for your continued
contribution to helping young people with cystic fibrosis.
The assistance CFA provides covers medications, equipment,
scholarships and lung transplants. Each order of Nachos
Navidad® and each Whiplash ornament helps us to help those
with CF. We couldn’t do it without your help.
Giving Hearts Day Continues to Grow
Below, is a letter from some of the leaders of the Dakota
Medical Foundation whose idea, “Giving Hearts Day,” has
grown to what it is today.
“Feb. 12 was a tremendous day for charities in North Dakota
and western Minnesota. As the hosts of Giving Hearts Day,
our foundations want to extend a heartfelt thank you to the
generous donors who gave $6.9 million to make our region a
better place to call home.
This unprecedented generosity has grown at an astounding
rate over the eight years since Giving Hearts Day was born.
This year, donors made 30,476 gifts, which is an increase
of 6,000 over the year before. New and long-time donors
together gave $1.2 million more than last year.
We continue to be amazed by the collective power of the
generous people of this region.
Giving Hearts Day has become a statewide “Day of Giving” in
North Dakota. When first instituted, it was limited to charities
in the Red River Valley. It then began to spread throughout
North Dakota and has become probably the largest single “Day
of Giving” of the year.
The Cystic Fibrosis Association has been a part of Giving
Hearts Day for several years now and each year the
contribution to CFA has grown. We are very appreciative of
those who participated by helping CFA with their contribution
on that day…and for that matter, every day.
We are finding some new donors each year and some other
donors that have contributed to help CFA throughout the year,
are choosing Giving Hearts Day as the day to boost their
giving. Thank you to all who participated. We continue to help
North Dakota people with cystic fibrosis with your help.
The money you donated is already at work in countless ways
across 287 charitable causes. You are making it easier for
disabled people to access the world around them. You are
helping children develop a love of the arts. You are saving
the lives of homeless animals by supporting foster care;
giving dental care to impoverished youth; providing beds to
homeless families. You are feeding your hungry neighbors
and teaching children to dance. You are helping people with
dyslexia learn to read, and people with Parkinson’s continue
to walk.
There are too many stories to illustrate here, but we have the
privilege of hearing them from our partner charities every
day.
Your gift made a difference to someone. Thank you for
giving.”

Donations Directed Toward Ongoing Need
Our thanks is again extended to area friends for the ongoing giving
taking place that helps us to provide the programs serving our young
members with cystic fibrosis. We are fortunate that more and more
of our members are able to consider higher education because of
the improvement in their conditions through new medications and
treatments. This is the time of year when we encourage them to start
preparing for college and to contact CFA about the scholarship
program we offer to members with CF. All of this costs money, but it
also allows them time while at college to continue their therapies. We
receive thanks from members for these programs, and it is our turn to
pass along that appreciation. Donations to CFA through a variety of
means help us to provide this service to our members.
The Drake Knights of Columbus continues to support CFA programs
with a donation of $145.40. Miles Grandin of Century 21 Morrison
Realty donated $100, as did Mari Wanzek.
Thank you to all for each and every gift. You are supporting the
programs that help CFA help our neighbors with cystic fibrosis.

Foundations, service clubs, corporations, cooperatives, local
businesses, public employees, schools, families and individuals
recognize the importance of helping young people with cystic fibrosis.
Your creative methods of remembering young people with cystic
fibrosis are much appreciated. We will continue to help them – with
your assistance. Thank you to all!

The City of Minot Employees continued their long-standing support
of CFA programs with a $400 contribution. Heather Goroski used her
Tastefully Simple business to contribute $480 to CFA.
A Holiday Gift of $500 was given by Verne Anne Goeppinger.
Benito Mar and the Mandan Moose Lodge each contributed $100 to
help CFA. Sue Kramer donated $1,000 as part of the Giving Hearts
Day promotion.
In addition, many of those who donated either “in memory of ” or “in
honor of ” friends and relatives made significant contributions. Some
even joined together to contribute. For example, St. Mary’s Grade
School in Bismarck donated $250 in honor of one of their fellow
students with CF.
Memorials
Giving memorials and honorariums are special ways of remembering and
honoring someone who has made a difference in your life. The idea of
helping someone else by honoring these individuals extends the positive
impact of their lives in our world. Our thanks to those who remember…
and to those they remembered. Many of those listed in this issue were
received as a part of Giving Hearts Day donations.

Time to Start Thinking CFA Scholarships
CHANGES IN CFA
SCHOLARSHIP POLICY
Those CFA members who are taking advantage of, or are planning to
take advantage of, CFA’s scholarship policy will face some changes
next semester.
State requirements for the manner in which scholarships are awarded
by charities require that payments be made to the institution or to the
institution with the student co-signing. Tuition payments as well as
those for books and fees must be made by CFA to the institution or the
institution and the student together.
Since CFA scholarships go only to members who have cystic fibrosis
and those persons can have special needs for off-campus housing and
meals, CFA has received a waiver from this rule with respect to room
and board.
Some things still remain as
they have in the past, however.
CFA policy still requires
that you file your FAFSA
application and contact CFA
with a copy of your letter of
eligibility once you receive it
in order to qualify for CFA’s
scholarship. You must also
list any scholarships or grants that do not require repayment and make
that list available to CFA as well. If you plan to attend post-secondary
education next fall, you should be starting that process now.
