Sept 5th at 5:30
Iris Schreier will autograph her newest book, Lacy Little Knits (or any of
her previous books, for that matter)
on Sept 5th at 5:30. She is also presenting a workshop on her mitered
techniques at 6:30 pm. Not only
does she teach and write, she also is
the owner of Art Yarns which will be
used in her workshop. The workshop
price includes the book and Art Yarn
Silk Rhapsody used in Iris’s pattern,
Long Stitch Wrap. You need to bring
some scrap yarn for practice and your
needles...and yourself, of course!
Knitspeak,
An A-Z Guide to the Language
of Knitting Patterns
by Andrea Price
Sat. Oct 6th at 1:00pm
Knit•speak n. \’nit’spEk\
1: a combination of words, abbreviations, numbers and punctuation that
is terse, truncated, and unintelligible
to the average knitter. 2: an A to Z
phrasebook that aims to take the mystery out of knitting pattern language.
Andrea Price will be signing her book,
Knitspeak, An A-Z Guide to the Language of Knitting Patterns on Sat. Oct.
6th at 1:00. Door prize drawing at 1:30
pm. Andrea lives in Washington DC and
is part of the Yarn Garden family. Her
brother, Raoul, magically supports our
shop computers from Olympia. Andrea
held focus groups at Yarn Garden prior
to writing her book. She says some of
our suggestions on how to untangle
patterns are in her book.
Crochet Me:
Designs to Fuel the Crochet
Revolution
by Kim Werker
Sat Oct 27 at 1:00pm
Meet Kim Werker, author of the
new, hip crochet book from Interweave Press: Crochet Me: Designs
to Fuel the Crochet Revolution on
Sat. Oct. 27th at 1:00. I’ve seen a
pre-press copy of this book, and
it’s not your Grandma’s designs.
You’re going to love it! Kim
will be teaching “Granny Squares
for the 21st Century – It’s Hip to
be Square”, at 2:00 pm. Kim has
appeared on Uncommon Threads,
Knit & Crochet Today, and Shay
Pendray’s Needle Arts Studio. She is
also the Editor of Interweave Crochet
magazine and the author of several
other crochet books. She founded
CrochetMe.Com in 2004. Students
need to know how to crochet a chain,
single crochet, half double crochet and
double crochet. You can do it! It’s
easy, and wait until you see the garments from this book. Fabulous.

From Linda’s
Knitting Chair
Yarn Garden is entering its 9th
year of business on September
1st. I’d like to thank you all
for your business and support.
It wouldn’t have happened
without you! Many of you
remember those first years.
We opened in the first commercial space at the west
end of the building. One
room, with the smaller
book and pattern room that
served as a classroom in
addition to its retail function. We
had a little storage in the back of the room. At first, it
was just you and me! I stayed at the shop in the evening until
the classes were over so that I could let you out and lock up.
Eventually I was able to hire another person to help out.
The second year, many times there was standing room only
and the store would be literally packed from wall-to-wall. I
called the building manager and whined a little saying that I
was going to have to move if he couldn’t find me more square
feet of retail space. And you know the rest! Every year we
seemed to need more room...not only for the sales floor but
also for back stock storage. And every year we expanded.
My office has moved four times! We needed more sales staff,
more teachers, more classrooms and of course: MORE YARN!
Shopping
Night for
Yarn Garden
Students
Monday Night, September
17th, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
It’s a fall party for students! We’ll serve refreshments. The shop
is open to fall students
only. We’ll have yarns
displayed for the new
classes and material
lists plus your teacher
might be there to help
you in addition to
t h e Ya r n G a r d e n
staff. Don’t forget,
Monday Sept 17th.
Bring yourself, we’ll
supply the champagne. Yahoo!
page 2
Did you realize that we rent two apartments in the building
behind the shop? One is a classroom and my current office
and the other is exclusively yarn storage. Yep, we have yarn
stacked in the bathtub, on top of the stove, in the cupboards
and on shelving we built all around the apartment. And you
thought you have a stash! Bags and bags and bags of yarn,
oh my. No one has come yet saying they have been in a yarn
store that has more variety and colors than Yarn Garden.
And all that, my dear customers, is because of you! I am aware
of all the choices available to fill your knitting needs and am
certainly grateful for your choosing to support Yarn Garden!
We are a local business supporting local employees and paying
local taxes. We offer yarns from around the world because
that’s what is available to us. If we could buy it locally, we
would. We love our location and the Hawthorne district, and
boy, do we love you all.
It has been my pleasure and delight to serve you. Together
we’re teaching Portland to knit and it’s such fun! Take advantage of the national teachers I bring to town to teach you
the latest and greatest stitches and techniques. Come to the
book signings and meet today’s needlework authors. We’re
still working on ways to serve you better, encourage you more,
clap for all the inspiring things you make, and keep our prices
as low as possible. Good job
everybody!

What’s New?
Fall Yarns Arriving
We’ve had so much fun presenting the
Noni Bag trunk show. All the bags
were knit by Jenifer Johnston who admits she’s a little obsessed with Noni
bag knitting. Jenifer teaches classes
on knitting your own Noni bag as well
as other classes. I took one of her Noni
bag classes and was delighted with
how much fun it was. We’re planning
another Noni Bag show in early spring
showing the new Noni designs.
called Niji which is a blend of wool, silk
and kid mohair. There is still more yarn
to come from Mr. Noro.
We have received new yarns from
Alchemy Yarns of Transformation,
including the yarns used to knit the
scarf on the cover of the Vogue 25th
Anniversary magazine. And by the
way, isn’t that a terrific issue? But how
can it only be 25 years? I still have some
issues from the 1960s! Remember the
mini dress on the cover with great big
sequins? Have it. It’s practically back
in fashion again.
Jade Saphire has sent 12 colors of their
2-ply Mongolian Cashmere and 8 colors
of their 2-ply Cashmere/Silk yarn. Talk
about silky soft. Yummy. Prism has sent
new Wild Stuff and Neat Stuff to keep our
in-store stash supplied with the newest
colorways.
New yarns from Art Yarns are hear so
you can knit patterns from Iris Schreier’s books. Check out the Beaded Silk
Rhapsody. It’s a big wow! Silk Rhapsody is glorious and is the yarn being
used in her workshop.
Some of the Noro has arrived! 20 colors
of Kureyon, can you believe it? 15 colors
of Silk Garden, 5 colors of Daria (to knit
those little handbags), and a new yarn
All the rage are the colorful leather
handles and leather flowers from Muench
Yarns. They are so beautiful! The Rebecca magazines have come in as well
as stock of Soft Kid, and Royal Tweed.
Other new yarns are on order along with
16 colors of Touch Me. Yipee!
Trendsetter Yarns have started to arrive.
Dune is here with 18 colors. Blossom,
the supersoft kid’s yarn has arrived in 15
colors. Among the new yarns that have
arrived are Journey, a delicious Alpaca
knit on a size 10 needle. Signoria, a new
yarn similar to the multi colors in Tonalita
except bulkier, 85 yards of wool/acrylic
blend knit on a size 11 needle. Super
fast knit, and reasonably priced, too!
We’ve restocked the soft and beautiful
Merino Sei for your knitting pleasure.
The designs for this yarn are as classic
and beautiful as the yarn itself.

Orenburg shawls, sometimes referred to as Russian shawls, have
only recently become known to the Western world, astonishing knitters with their unusual beauty and delicacy. Knit a
mini-shawl, either a square or rectangular shape, learning to
work the sawtooth edging at the same time as the body of the
shawl. Experiment with incorporating various lace stitches into
it as well. At the end of the class students will have learned
the knitting basics, as well as information on suitable yarns
and blocking information, so that you can then design and
knit your own full-sized shawl. Further reference works will
be given to pursue more advanced designs.

SHAWLS
Lace Shawls with shoulder
shaping
Intermediate
Workshop #W-5
Sat. 10:00 am to 5:00 pm
December 8th
Joan Schrouder
$70 includes lunch
From the Faroe Islands in the cold North Atlantic Ocean come
these wonderful shawls, especially shaped to cling to the
shoulders. While traditionally knit from the bottom up, they
can just as easily be worked from the top down.
Knit two mini Faroese shawls, learning to work the unique
shoulder shaping into the body of the shawl, one sample with
a darted shoulder, the other with a gathered shoulder. Experiment with incorporating various lace stitches into the distinctive center panel. Then miter a corner and attach the border to
the body stitches as you knit it. A final miter and the Russian
graft, and your shawl is ready for blocking!
By the end of the class students will have learned the knitting
basics, as well as information on suitable yarns and blocking
information, so that they can then design and knit their own
full- size shawl. Further reference works will be given to pursue
more advanced designs.

Red Scarf Project
News About
Customer Programs
We are starting the Red Scarf Project (matching hat optional) earlier this year per all your
requests. For those of you who are new to
this project, it was started by the Orphan
Foundation of America in 2005. Knitters
and crocheters across the country sent thousands of hand knit and crocheted scarves to
be sent with valentine packages for foster
youth that have cycled out of foster care
and started colleges and universities. This
year, all donated scarves (matching hats)
will stay in Oregon and go to Oregon foster
youth. The deadline for completed scarves
and hats is January 31st.
New: We are offering a free simple
canvas tote bag to customers with a
$100 purchase.
Red Scarf
Guidelines:
Scarf Size:
Approximately 60” long and 5” to 8”
wide. Scarves should be long enough to be
wrapped around the neck, with tails long
enough to be tied in the front.
Style: Think unisex collegiate. Ask yourself if your son, brother, and/or husband
would enjoy receiving the scarf. Fringes
are optional. Your scarf should drape and
tie easily.
As you might have found, Yarn Garden’s philosophy is to bring you a
large variety of quality yarns, tools and
education at reasonable prices. With
the drop of the value of the US dollar
in Europe and the increase in shipping
costs, many of our distributors have
been forced to raise their prices. We
will be forced to raise our prices as these
increases reach us. But, we are trying
very hard to keep our costs as low as
possible for you. And every time we see
a new quality yarn with good company
support and a great price, we bring it
in for you. That’s why you can find a
skein costing $3 and a skein over $50.
We all like choices! And we all like a
good deal, right?
Our birthday program is ending at the
end of the year. It has become increasingly difficult with so many names and
address to manage so we’re letting it go.
Stay tuned as we search for other ways
to serve you!
Yarn:
Preferably DK, double fingering-weight, worsted weight, or light bully yarns.
No laceweight, super-chunky, or mohair
yarns as there are many people who find
mohair too itchy. The yarn should be soft.
Color:
Red! However, this could mean burgundy,
cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors,
or multicolor hues including red.
Finished and tagged:
Yarn ends should be securely sewn in. Attach a tag with your first name, city, and
group affiliation, if any. Donors have also
included washing instructions, messages of
encouragement, gift cards, burger bucks,
books of stamps, etc.
