Test and Measurement Trends in the Aerospace Defense Market Segment
Defense budgets continue to shrink, driven by calls for smaller military forces that have greater technological capabilities. As a result, the push is
stronger than ever to do more with less, especially in test and measurement. At the same time, performance and reliability requirements for Aerospace
& Defense systems are becoming increasingly stringent. In light of these seemingly conflicting requirements, test tools need to address crucial issues
such as ease of use, cost of test and, perhaps most importantly, cutting edge performance.

Simplifying TR Module Test Solution
Radar, satellite and EW systems use numerous microwave modules. One example is transmit/receive (TR) modules: AESA systems use thousands,
and all require extensive testing to ensure matching across a phased array. With any complex system, total cost of test is affected by cumulative test
time, equipment cost and labor burden. One solution is a single high-performance
instrument such as the PNA-X network analyzer. Beyond network analysis, the highly integrated PNA-X can also perform spectrum measurements
such as IMD, noise figure and compression –-- rapidly and accurately. The resulting improvement in throughput enhances testing in production and
engineering.

New Approaches in Field Maintenance
Radar and satellite ground segments are complex, sophisticated systems that use high performance active and passive components. As a result, the
teams assigned to maintain and repair these systems face difficult challenges, and system downtime can put lives at risk. Rugged measurement
equipment with new capabilities can reduce repair time by decreasing complexity during performance validation down to the Line Replaceable Unit
(LRU) level.

New Innovations in Measurement Techniques for Spurious & Unknown Signals
Measuring spurious signals is essential to the characterization of radar, EW, satellite and communication systems. The dynamic nature of such
systems only increases the difficulty of spurious measurements. Recently, the evolution of test equipment has led to new methods that make it
easier to measure small and unknown signals. This paper discusses the respective advantages and tradeoffs of traditional and modern
techniques when measuring spurious, EMI and unknown signals. It also describes how to apply these methods to various devices in design and
production settings, and how design or verification engineers can attain closer correlation to evolving test standards.

Enhancing Signal Simulation for Electronic Warfare Test
In highly realistic EW simulations, threats are created in software and pulse descriptor words (PDWs) are sent to agile signal sources at a rate of
millions of pulses per second and played at RF. The number, quality and cost of the agile sources are key factors affecting the fidelity of open-loop
simulations. Greater realism is possible with a closed-loop, adaptive approach that can identify weaknesses versus advanced-threat ECCM.
Improvements in simulation capability enable creation of affordable, adaptable EW simulation. Further, greater fidelity in early-stage test simulation
reveals problems sooner, when they are less costly to fix.

Understanding New Pulse-analysis Techniques
Successful pulse analysis begins with assumptions about the emitter environment. These include the carrier frequencies, duty cycles and pulserepetition frequencies of the emitters. If multiple emitters are interleaved to increase pulse density, suitable tools enable analysis of the broadest
possible spectrum while correctly sorting and measuring the emitters. Analysis of long, complex scenarios require use of either multiple instruments
or multi-channel instruments. This paper presents techniques for analysis of such scenarios.

Designing and Verifying Advanced Radar Systems within Complex Environment Scenarios
A variety of simulation techniques enable accurate evaluation of radar system performance. For example, radar scenario simulations can be created
using models that include scattering, clutter, jamming and interference derived from real-world conditions. Simulations can also include the effects of
platform motion, as occurs with aircraft, ships and satellites. These techniques are useful in the development of phased-array, MIMO, active/passive
and multi-static systems, and they also can be used for verification of narrowband or wideband EW systems.

Applying Vector Signal Analysis to Satellite and Wideband Communication Systems
Channel-quality measurements and vector signal analysis are effective ways to characterize singlecarrier formats as well as multi-carrier formats
such as OFDM. This paper presents useful methods such as diverse-location group delay measurements and algorithmic techniques for testing DUTs
with embedded local oscillators. It also describes the value of high dynamic range in accurately troubleshooting transmitter quality.

Flexible Test Architectures to Ensure Future Test Capabilities for Evolving Tactical and
Public Safety Radios
The fragmentation of existing tactical and public-safety radio technologies, combined with emerging commercial standards, is driving the need for
test systems that support new and legacy standards. This paper reviews the benefits of modular test architectures that utilize the same measurement
science used in traditional instruments. Advantages in speed and flexibility help decrease test time and support changing test requirements while
reducing equipment inventory and support costs.

Addressing Signal Integrity Issues in Electronic Warfare Systems
In today's EW systems, wider bandwidths produce huge amounts of data that must be moved and processed, and this is driving design engineers to
innovate at the signal-processing level. As data rates grow, various effects can degrade electrical signals to the extent that errors occur and the device
or system fails. This paper will explore a variety of challenges in signal integrity and where they can occur, and propose solutions, in simulation and
measurement, that address those issues.
