Building Development Planning, Permitting and Inspections
The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County recognize there are opportunities to enhance services and
improve collaboration to provide more seamless service delivery as it relates to the building development
planning, permitting and inspection process. As a result, the City and County jointly contracted with
consultants to gather input from customers and conduct an independent review of current procedures
and processes, their effectiveness and efficiencies and to identify opportunities for improvement that
could further customer service and optimize service delivery.
As part of the independent review, the consultants identified primary themes describing current issues
and the desired future vision and then translated these into a series a recommendations. City/County staff
formed a Unified Development Services Committee to oversee implementation until, as recommended,
a “unified” governance structure is in place. Four work teams were established to advance prioritized
efforts and to facilitate continuous improvement.
