As soon as one enters
Amenzone Primal Fitness
at Plaza Fountainside, the
realization hits that this
workout studio looks nothing like a regular gym.
There’s an absence of
expensive exercise equipment and weights. The
closest things visible are
tires and a handful of
punching bags.
Instead of mirrors covering the walls, inspirational
quotes are written on the
chalk walls to motivate
members.
“No one flaunts their biceps in the mirror because
there are none. There’s no
room for vanity here,” said
Amen Iseghohi, founder of
the business.
Amenzone Primal Fitness opened in April and
celebrated April 29 with
a Chamber of Commerce
ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Amenzone workouts
rely on an exercise regimen that Iseghohi learned
from his grandmother in
Nigeria.
Born in Belgium, where
his father was an architect,
the family moved to London. When he was eight
years old, his father sent
him and his sister to live
with his grandparents for
three years.
“My dad wanted me
to learn the culture. He
didn’t want me disconnected from it,” Iseghohi
said.
The back-to-basics culture shocked the youngsters. His grandmother,
Felicia Shaka Momodu,
was a javelin thrower and
exercised with old tires.
He remembers her saying that “like a tire, life is
about movement. My son,
you must keep moving in
order to make progress.”
She engrained in him
the differences between
wants and needs.
Her passion to stay in
shape rubbed off on him,
and as he matured, he recognized that the tire was
“just a prop. My grandmother used it as a tool for
self-empowerment.”
Without knowing it,
playing with tires kept him
not only active, but also
contributed to his physical
health. If he and his sister
gave up easily, she concluded that was how they
would react to anything
that was challenging.
Her life lessons shaped
his character, personality
and business career. He
earned a bachelor’s degree
in international business
from London Guildhall
University. He played professional rugby.
Ten years ago he moved
to the United States in
hopes of a job with CocaCola. When that did not
pan out, a head hunter
recruited him for a sales
position with a flooring
company and assigned him
