May 2014 PRICE: FREE MAY 2014 ROUNDABOUT COMMUNITY NEWS, EVENTS & BUSINESSES FOR THE PEOPLE OF NEWBOLD & LONG LAWFORD 1 Roundabout FROM THE METHODISTS As I write this, my son has just returned after spending 6 months in Sierra Leone, volunteering as a teacher in a secondary school, and also helping to build a school with the Extra-Mile charity he went with. They are building a school to take children who cannot afford an education….you may have seen similar on the Sport Relief programme, where David Tennant was in Sierra Leone. Listening to a few of the stories, even those children who can afford to go to school, also have to work many hours, to help to support the family, doing jobs like breaking stones. Children are desperate to go to school, as they see education as a way to move out of poverty. Life is hard, and life is very different. It’s a different world. At least it seems it, but actually it’s the same world, it’s just not recognisable as the same world. We expect to be able to turn on a tap and water come out, but where my son has been sometimes it’s a 2 mile walk to a tap, we expect to switch on lights when we want to, but for them electricity for an hour a day is a luxury, and often not available. Stepping into, and sharing in another person’s world, can change us as we encounter those who are different to us. It can challenge us, and it can make us understand more, not only about the other person but also about ourselves. By the time you read this, my son will be in India working in an orphanage. We may not be able to travel to different parts of the world, but we don’t have to go far to find people who live differently to us, and have different values in life. I always remember a little sign my mother-in-law had in her kitchen. Never judge another person until you have walked a mile in their moccasins Ok, so maybe that wouldn’t sell many newspapers, but it might help to build community, if rather than judging, we tried to understand; if rather than just looking out for ourselves we shared what we could. It may not change the world, but it might help to change someone’s world, and that’s a great start! Rev Jane A PARISH PRAYER FOR MAY Heavenly Father, we thank you for our community in which we live; we thank you for every person who lives here; help us to care more for our community, to share your love and to stand for your truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 2 May 2014 SUNDAY SERVICES All are welcome to come along and join us!
