Mater Matters Fall 2012 rt o Rep012 l ua011-2 n An 2 Opening Comments From the Principal During a recent trip to my ancestral home, Ireland, I visited St. Patrick’s Church in Glenbrohane where my great grandparents were married. This simple country church overlooks a sweeping vista of rolling hills, dotted with sheep and cows belonging to the local farmers. My cousin, Mike Tobin, whispered to me during Mass, “That chalice was the one used at your great grandmother’s wedding. The church has only one, and I am sure that was the one used.” I was distracted during Mass thinking about where John Buckley stood as he watched Ellen Tobin walk down the aisle. How did they meet? What walks did they walk? What dreams did they have for the future? Did they envision what their own life would become — immigrating to America, their future home in Philadelphia? Probably not. What John and Ellen saw was a loom inviting them to weave the fabric of their lives together into a tapestry they would never see completed. And that is the story for all of our ancestors — they weave, they make their contribution, and then they turn it over to successive generations. Catherine McAuley had the same experience. She never intended to start a religious congregation. She was advised, however, that if she wanted her work to have longevity, she needed to turn her House of Mercy into a convent. Although she opened many convents with schools and safe houses, she did not live long enough to see the tapestry of Mercy life in the United States. Patricia Waldron, an Irish immigrant, came to Philadelphia in 1861, 20 years after Catherine died. Those beginning years for Sister Patricia were difficult — the young community lived simply on meager offerings from generous neighbors. They suffered through the cholera and flu epidemics; funds were scarce. They endured. They too took single strands and wove the tapestry. Now it is our turn to continue that work. Today, Merion Mercy students take to heart the Mercy mission mandate “To live mercy, seek justice.” As you will read in this edition of Mater Matters, they travel throughout the United States living out the mission of Mercy, particularly in service to the poor. Like the rest of us, they will not know how the tapestry turns out, yet they are willing to weave together. The success of the 2011-12 MMAnnual Fund is a clear example of the unity and dedication of the Merion Mercy family. I am pleased to share with you some of these highlights: this year, we raised $550,284. We achieved increased dollars and stronger donor participation on every level. Our annual fund revenue is up over $100,000 from last year. We showed strong growth in parent participation, alumnae support, and EITC donations. On behalf of all of us at Merion Mercy Academy, thank you for your generosity. You have strengthened the fabric of our lives today, as well as our commitment to live out the mission of Catherine McAuley for the generations to come. The word “mercy” was a mere thought or a pleasant idea, and the girls’ names of the class of 2012 were practically unfamiliar. However, those things have changed because we have changed. 511 Montgomery Avenue is more than an address to our school — it is now our second home. Whenever we speak or hear the word “mercy,” we know that it is not just written on our class rings, but it is also written on our hearts. Each of the girls’ names in the class of 2012 is more than just a name now: we are sisters. We have Merion Mercy Academy to thank for these uplifting changes in our lives. Each year at Merion has brought memories and growth that will be with us forever. Freshman year stands out for the introduction to table fries, the embarrassing pictures taken on the first day of school, and learning the swing of things as we piled on the books for homework each night. With sophomore year came the arduous yet fulfilling task of the research paper, and much better Weenie Roast skits as everyone tried to make up for their freshman year performances. Junior year brought us together for the traditional Carol Night before Christmas, Mercy Volunteer Programs across the country, and our Ring Mass, where we received our blessed class rings that will help us represent the mercy we have embraced here at this wonderful academy. Finally, senior year brought senior sleepover, prom, and the thrilling news of college acceptances. But our total experience might best be described by the words of Catherine McAuley: “Indeed, love is the only measure of a life well lived.” Our life here at MMA has been measured by the love felt and exchanged among us. With our passionate school spirit, we encouraged and congratulated each other as we brought home trophies and awards for athletics, the arts, and academics. We came together to support our classmate Jacqueline Fioravanti by participating in walks, visiting her, and selling items in the school store for her cause. Each year, our schedules grew a little more hectic, and the work a little more difficult; yet the laughs grew ever louder, and the friendships ever tighter. With Merion as our second home for these past few years, leaving it, although exciting, seems slightly unnatural. “College” has always been an immense, looming entity. We hear the horror stories: picking out an outfit every day, wearing makeup, and the troubling reality of actually going to school with boys. But in the face of uncertainty, remember that Merion is always here. We may feel anxious about leaving our families and homes for the first time, but we are ready. Merion has imbued us with the Mercy Core Values — yes, they are more than just words on the backs of our planners. Through these past four years, the Mercy Core Values have come to life as this sisterhood has shown compassion, love, and understanding to others. Merion Mercy is a part of who we are, and we will be bringing it with us not only to college, but also throughout our lives. We have both the academic and the spiritual tools we need to succeed and now it is up to us to put them into action. It is through our will to “live mercy” that Merion will shine through us as we seek to lead our lives in ways that will remind us of the love we have felt at MMA. Courtney Devine ’13 Field Hockey In 2009, Courtney was selected for MMA’s varsity field hockey team as Courtney has achieved many goals through her hard work, discipline, and perseverance. She will play for Villanova University in fall 2013. a freshman and earned MMA Rookie of the Year. Her skills and leadership grew from there and this year she will serve as varsity field hockey captain and varsity lacrosse captain. When not playing for Merion, she plays for the Mystx Field Hockey Club. During the summer, Courtney attends college field hockey camps, travels for national tournaments, and coaches local grade school camps. Meghan Donahue ’14 Golf Meghan has been working on her golf swing since she was six years old. She plays for MMA’s golf team and represented MMA at the Catholic League Golf Districts. She also plays at Rolling Green Golf Club, where she is currently the female Junior Golf Program Champion. advice to “strive for your dreams and work hard even when others have no faith in you.” She has taken these words to heart and plays almost every day. She continues to work on her swing and hopes it will earn her a golf scholarship for a Division I college. Mary Grace Zeller ’13 Soccer Mary Grace participates in spring and winter soccer for MMA and plays on a competitive club team throughout the year. She attends a soccer summer camp at Villanova University and works out through running, swimming, and weightlifting. Mary Grace Zeller ’13 Meghan Donahue ’14 Courtney Devine ’13 She once met Sean Foley, swing coach of Tiger Woods, Hunter Mahan, and Justin Rose. Meghan recalls his Mary Grace challenges herself to improve on a particular skill every time she goes on the field. She has learned the importance of joining new teams with a mindset “to learn about the coach’s view of the game and how the teammates play on the field.” Mary Grace says “one of the Fall 2012 7 MMA Athletic news most important lessons I have learned is that playing any sport should not be done for the benefit of impressing someone or… fulfilling someone else’s dreams; it should be for the benefit of pure pleasure.” Mary Grace looks forward to playing soccer her senior year at Merion and is deciding between universities at this time. Julianne D’Orazio ’13 Lacrosse Julianne plays basketball and lacrosse for Merion Mercy. Her main sport is lacrosse which she dedicates herself to year-round through clinics, winter indoor league, summer tournaments, college camps, and playing on the Phantastix Lacrosse Club. With all her commitments, Julianne has learned determination, discipline, and time management. She enjoys “learning to work with all different types of people and the opportunity to make lifelong friendships with your teammates.” Julianne D’Orazio ’13 Julianne’s skills were recognized in 2012 with various awards and honors such as US Lacrosse All-Academic Team, First Team US Lacrosse All-American, First Team All-Main Line, and Catholic Academy League All-Star. Julianne has helped to make MMA the Catholic Academies champions in 2010, 2011, and 2012. After graduating Merion, she will play Division I lacrosse for Lehigh University. In addition to the excitement of returning to the Thames to defend last year’s win, every grade (9-12) at MMA was represented in the boat race! M erion's crew team had another historic season, winning Stotesbury gold for the first time since the full sweep program began in 2005 (and then winning it twice!), adding a second straight Scholastic Nationals championship, getting three boats to the finals of Nationals, and reaching the finals of the prestigious Henley Women's Regatta in England. The Stotesbury Regatta, held on the Schuylkill each spring, is the country's largest high school regatta and Merion has been a strong presence in recent years, winning medals and reaching finals. The only Stotesbury threshold left to cross was to break through and take gold. It was MMA's Freshman 8 that broke through first, winning the closest Stotesbury final in recent memory, a true photo finish over Winter Park of Florida. The official margin was 3/100ths of a second, in a race that took 4 minutes and 59 seconds! The win capped a big year for Merion's freshmen and novices, which included a rare double at the City Championships, with MMA's Freshman 8 and Novice 8 both taking gold. The Freshman 8 finished off the spring with the best Scholastic Nationals finish by a freshman boat in school history, taking silver, less than a second behind New Trier of Ilinois. At Stotesbury, MMA's Junior Varsity 8 reached the final, then the Varsity 4 won gold, defeating Mainland of New Jersey. A week later, the Varsity 4 doubled up, winning the national title, again over Mainland. MMA's Second Eight also reached the national final. This marked the first time three Merion boats had reached national finals. Merion returned to England to defend its title at the Henley Women's Regatta. Facing crazy winds and currents and fierce opposition, Merion won its semifinal by less than a second over the top boat in England, Lady Eleanor Holles. MMA then lost the final by a half a boat length to undefeated Aberdeen School of Scotland. An unforgettable trip capping another great season. Mercy Volunteer Program Marks its 20th Year By: Kristina Stanton Cawley ’90 Merion Mercy girls from any graduating class know that September 24 is a day of celebration for the MMA community. On that date in 1827, in Dublin, Ireland, Catherine McAuley opened the House of Mercy to provide a school for poor children, a shelter for girls coming from the farms to find work, and a place where girls could learn a trade and sell their goods. She also distributed food, clothing, and coal to the sick and the starving. These works became the hallmark of the Mercy charism. 10 Mater Matters F ast forward 165 years to Mercy Day in 1992 at MMA. Making the walk from the auditorium back to the school building, faculty members Ms. Kimberly Baxter and Mrs. Rosemary Vieira began developing the Mercy Volunteer Program (MVP). They had left a Mercy Day Assembly featuring Mr. Martin Farrell. (Mr. Farrell currently serves as the Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at Saint Joseph’s University and a Waldron Mercy Academy trustee). At the time, Mr. Farrell had come to MMA to share his experiences as a Mercy Volunteer Corp volunteer, highlighting his work at St. Michael’s Mission in Arizona. His talk mentioned the many chances to serve others that extended beyond the Delaware Valley. Ms. Baxter and Mrs. Vieira immediately felt the impact of Mr. Farrell’s message. They knew more service opportunities would further illuminate the core values of the school. That realization and the prospect of involving students in the kind of outreach that Catherine had modeled compelled them to start MVP. “We established the MVP program to provide educational and service opportunities for students the summer before their senior year,” explained Ms. Baxter. “In the 20 years of its existence, we have traveled to domestic and international sites, working in collaboration with community partners and in solidarity with people of diverse culture, especially those who are materially poor.” In the past two decades, MVP visited far-off places, such as Kentucky, West Virginia, Arizona, Peru, and Mexico, and closer sites in Camden and Trenton. “The works we do in the various programs during the summer have broad range. Tara Echelmeier Dolan ’94, Bronwyn Reichert Kenefick ’94, and Ms. Kimberly Baxter. paint homes, garden, serve dinners at homeless shelters, lead vacation Bible school, and take on a variety of assignments given to us by the point person at each site,” said Ms. Baxter. The MMA student and faculty volunteers live in community for an extended period of time and are called to spirit-filled reflection that encourages them to grow in their role as women of Mercy. “Our first MVP trip was to Campton, Kentucky where we joined Sister Mimi Connor, RSM to teach Vacation Bible School,” shared Ms. Baxter. Over the next several years of the program, missioners traveled to a total of three different Catholic churches in Kentucky, connected by the same pastor, to teach Bible school and complete various outreach projects in the community. “What has been most distinctive about our 20 years of service in Kentucky has been experiencing the unique Appalachian culture and witnessing the importance of family expressed by the children,” added Ms. Baxter. From this program’s inception, students have enthusiastically embraced the diverse service opportunities and have recognized the ways in which they connect to curriculum. “We take a course called Social Justice in junior year. In that class we learn about social wrongs and poverty, but we also discuss interesting elements of the different cultures and ways to make an impact in our world,” said Martha Zeller ’13. “When the chance to go to Arizona presented itself, I felt as if I could apply what I learned in class to a real situation and broaden my world view.” Faculty member Mrs. Maureen Meacham added, “In MMA Theology classes, the teachers stress that our Catholicism is part of our students’ everyday lives. We encourage the girls to see the care of others and all of creation as part of our Baptismal promises to serve God and others. When I have worked with the juniors in MVP at Camden, I have been amazed at their level of reflection about the Social Justice issues facing us as Christians in the 21st century.” She concluded, “Our prayer as teachers and moderators is that service becomes a lifestyle and deepens the students’ relationship with God.” Fall 2012 11 Mercy Volunteer Program Marks its 20th Year “We established the MVP program to provide educational and service opportunities for students the summer before their senior year.” Undoubtedly, many MVP alumnae view their service experiences as both life-changing and enriching. The values of MVP are often brought to the next phase of their life’s journey. “(While participating in MVP) I taught vacation bible school to second graders,” explained Kathryn Valosky ’08. “I was so inspired by these children from the minute we met them because, despite our diverse backgrounds, they immediately accepted me and showed me love and friendship. Suddenly, I felt that I deeply knew what it meant to see God in people as I discovered the power of the human connection. Ever since that summer, I have sought to give the same love and care that my children gave to me to others by forming genuine, lifegiving relationships in the spirit of the quote on the back of our MVP t-shirts: ‘If you have come to help me, then you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.’ In this way, my MVP experience has very much shaped the path I took at Villanova and in my future career.” Miss Valosky continued, “During college I was heavily involved in campus ministry, service, and peace and justice activities and because I wanted to grow in my understanding of social justice. To continue this path, I will embark on a year of post-graduate volunteering with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps because ultimately MVP and MMA’s other outreach programs planted the seed for my passion for people and for my desire to live a life of service.” MVP alumnae repeatedly report that the summer trips spurred future outreach work; these influences motivate participants in a variety of ways. “By the summer of 2008, Merion had already instilled in me the concept of civil equity, but, until my MVP trip, I had not comprehended that to fully ‘live mercy and seek justice’ we must include the environment. It is no coincidence that now, the summer preceding my senior year at the University of San Diego, I find myself living and studying on an organic farm in Hawaii,” said Miss Kaitlin Soper ’09. “My MVP experience continues to influence my life choices, from everyday decisions to long-term career planning. Upon graduating, I will be commissioned as an officer in the Navy through the ROTC program as a hopeful helicopter pilot with an interest in the development of biofuels. Following my commitment, I aspire to start a farm of my own while developing edible schoolyard and community gardens throughout low-income areas. No matter where my branches cultivate as I strive to grow change, I will always know that my roots began with my MVP trip to Bethlehem Farm in West Virginia.” Our Name is Mercy By: Kimberly Baxter, MVP Coordinator “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” This sentiment from Mother Teresa has been the spirit of the Mercy Volunteer Program and it is with profound humility and heartfelt appreciation that I express my thankfulness to the countless people that I have been privileged to partner with over these 20 years. I would like to thank all of the MMA students who have accepted the call to serve people of varied circumstances, communities, and cultures. It has been true joy to witness the continuance of that commitment by so many as they have progressed into their adult lives. Much appreciation also goes to Sister Regina Ward, RSM and Sister Barbara Buckley, RSM for their encouragement and support 12 Mater Matters of the Mercy Volunteer Program. Their espousal continues to make all of this possible. A sincere debt of gratitude is owed to the dozens of MMA faculty, staff, families, and alumnae who have been integral to the success and excellence of this program. They have generously and selflessly shared their gifts, talents, and Mercy world view throughout these many years. And most especially, I would like to acknowledge all of the lovely individuals who we have been blessed to encounter through these amazing service experiences. They have opened up their hearts and souls to us. We have been touched by their generosity of spirit and we will never be the same. In the words of our foundress, Catherine McAuley, “Our name is MERCY. Our spirit is COMPASSION.” The adult chaperones that go with the students share equally enthusiastic sentiments. Over the years, dozens of MMA faculty and staff members generously have given their time and talent to participate in these trips. “The chaperones and supporters have been absolutely integral to the success of MVP. Their incredible spirit of service and commitment to the Mercy charism has been a source of inspiration for the students with whom they partner. They have offered so many gifts that have furthered the excellence of this program,” confided Ms. Baxter. For instance, former faculty member Tara Echelmeier Dolan ’94 not only went on the first MVP trip to Kentucky when she was a student, but, upon returning to MMA as a teacher, she led the first MVP trip abroad. “We selected Oaxaca, Mexico as our destination for that first trip,” shared Mrs. Dolan. “I had chaperoned a trip to Oaxaca for college students the year before, and I had such an incredible experience there with the Maryknoll Sisters and Lay Women Missioners who hosted us. I wanted Merion girls to meet such women. They told personal stories of working with Archbishop Romero and sharing friendship with the likes of Ita Ford, Maura Clarke, Dorothy Kazel, and Jean Donovan (all martyred) in El Salvador. In great detail, they told us about each of their friends in Oaxaca, the very poor whom we'd visit every day simply to provide a ‘ministry of presence’- we went to build relationships and to break down broad misconceptions about those living in severe poverty. The MMA students now had a face, a name, a home, a story when I asked them to reflect on Dorothy Day's quote, ‘Recall the face of the poorest person you've ever met and ask yourself if your next Kaitlin Soper ’09 (front left) works with volunteers from other schools at Bethlehem Farm. step will be of any use to that person.’ (On this trip) we all came to understand far more about our shared humanity than anything else.” MVP strives to do many things, such as bridging the gap between different age groups, socio-economic groups, and cultures. The impact the MVP groups make in the communities they visit for just a week is quite remarkable. "MMA always brings a stellar group of young women who are eager and wellprepared for the experience. They are accompanied by excellent chaperones from the faculty who help guide them through the week. The MMA group contributes positively to the communitybuilding and group dynamics of the experience. We look forward to the MMA group each year and hope that our relationship continues to deepen. In return, I know that they go home with changed hearts," said Director of Bethlehem Farm Eric Fitts. Through the support of the administration, faculty, staff, students, alumnae, and families, MMA’s deep desire that Catherine McAuley’s vision for Mercy continues is what drives the work to integrate her vision throughout the school’s programs. As MVP completed its 20th summer service program, it is clear how the core values are deep rooted into this program so that the legacy of Catherine McAuley continues. By reaching out and to others and experiencing a true world view, MVP participants are able to literally bring the values of Mercy to extended communities while infusing the halls of MMA with the same values upon which the Sisters of Mercy were founded. Fall 2012 13 “Girls Will Be Girls, but Merion Girls Will Be…” By: Mary Catherine Carr ’13 The creativity of Megan Maguire Steele ’98 has taken her from Merion Station to New York City, from Merion Mercy Art Major to owner of her own successful public relations agency: Maguire Steele. After attending Christ the King Regional School in Haddonfield, New Jersey, Ms. Maguire Steele chose Merion in part because her parents valued a Catholic, single-sex education. Upon visiting, she was impressed by Merion’s range of academic and extracurricular offerings. “One of Merion's strengths is that it has so many opportunities for students to be involved in a variety of activities,” says Ms. Maguire Steele, who during her time at MMA was a member of the soccer and track teams, stage crew, and the Art Honor Society. Her passion for art and creativity, fostered throughout her time at Merion, led her to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting, as well as minors 14 Mater Matters in business and art history, at Washington University in St. Louis. “Washington University offered the benefits of a full-fledged art school coupled with the context and full resources of a university,” she says. Following her time at Washington University, Ms. Maguire Steele earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting at Rhode Island School of Design and collegiate teaching certification from Brown University, where she graduated with Honors. Ms. Maguire Steele credits Merion’s rigorous academic preparation and training for making the transition into collegiate life “seamless.” Ms. Maguire Steele’s overall academic experience, focused heavily on the arts, prepared her for her work in the fashion industry, beginning with an internship at fashion label Luca Luca during her time as an undergraduate at Washington University. Following her internship, Ms. Maguire Steele worked as a freelance PR assistant at Luca Luca, a PR Director at Williamson, and a PR Senior Director at Tractenberg & Co. before deciding to open her own public relations agency, Maguire Steele, in 2008. Her agency specializes in full service public relations and the representation of emerging and established designer men’s, women’s and accessories brands, prestige beauty and grooming brands and retail and e-commerce stores. She was motivated to launch Maguire Steele in order to have the freedom to represent clients she wanted to work with, saying she is “drawn to clients whose businesses are dynamic and creative and who have the potential to grow significantly.” Ms. Maguire Steele cites participating in the success and growth of clients such as Billy Reid (the first designer ever to win the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Vogue Fashion Fund Award, GQ Best New Designer Award in the same year, and the recipient of the CFDA Best Menswear Designer of the Year Award in 2012) as an inspiration for her own business. “One of Merion’s strengths is that it has so many opportunities for students to be involved in a variety of activities” Ms. Maguire Steele says the most important lesson she learned at Merion was to be accountable at all times, and to protect one’s reputation. Today, she carries those lessons with her, priding herself in conducting a successful business in an ethical manner. In addition to those lessons, she also cherishes the friendships she made during her time at Merion, and recently participated in the wedding of Lauren Teti ’98, along with fellow Merion “sister” Jessica Pepino Lesovitz ’98. Ms. Maguire Steele says the friendships and bonds she formed at Merion were some of the highlights of her experience. When asked what advice she would give to MMA ladies, past and present, Ms. Maguire Steele has this to share: “Rely on the foundation of ethics and values that your family and Merion have provided to guide you in your actions. Carve out your own path whenever you can. Break the mold.” Career and Mentoring The first Alumnae Association Career and Mentoring social was held at City Tap, Philadelphia. Close to 20 alumnae enjoyed spending time with one another while making new connections, synergies, and professional partnerships. A group of us from the class of 1958 will once again enjoy lunch together at the Windrift in Avalon (in August). We have had it on our calendars since March. I saw my classmate Ellen Gowen McNeill ’58 on the Yacht Club House Tour. It was a fun time that included a delicious lunch and even a gift for all tour goers. Our family welcomed our sixth grandchild up in Bethlehem, a little boy named Kaizen Vaughn Currie, nicknamed Kai. We are thrilled.” Lauren FitzPatrick ’94 works for the Chicago Sun-Times. She is a staff reporter and covers the Chicago public schools. The Sixties Linda Kilker Sparks ’63 shared this message with her annual fund gift, “Looking forward to the 50th reunion next year!” The Eighties Angela David Beatty ’89 resides in Haddonfield, NJ with her husband Tom and their three children: Ben (14), Sam (10), and Kika (6). Angela is currently the Continuity Director for KYW Newsradio 1060. 16 Mater Matters Christina Puntel ’94 was honored as one of the School District of Philadelphia’s Distinguished High School Teachers. Christina teaches at Parkway Northwest. The Philadelphia Inquirer stated, “(Christina) began teaching learning support at Sheppard School in Kensington in 1998. Her practice has been strengthened through her involvement in Philadelphia Teachers’ Learning Cooperation and the Philadelphia Writing Project. She values collaboration and seeks to teach in ways that celebrate her students’ strengths.” Aidan Barlow Vega ’98 is on the forefront of the art community of Philadelphia. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Saint Joseph’s University and a Master of Arts Administration from Drexel University. In 2009, Aidan began working at the Barnes Foundation where she oversees the membership program and has increased membership from 1,000 households to 23,000. Aidan also assisted in directing Visitor Services Operations as the new building in Philadelphia opened, welcoming as many people in the first two months as was possible for a whole year at the Merion location. She is excited to be a part of such a historic cultural event in Philadelphia. Aidan reported, “I certainly trace back my love of the arts to my time as an Art Major with Sister Ethel at Merion. She did not just teach us how to create art, but to always put our projects in a broader historical context so that we understood the importance of what came before us.” Elizabeth Judge Hoffman ’98 works as a nurse and is the Director of Critical Care at Roxborough Memorial Hospital. Her sister, Anne Judge ’99, is also a nurse. Anne works as the Trauma Coordinator in the ER at Jefferson Hospital. Anne was recently nominated for the Lauren Ehrlich Excellence in Trauma Clinical Nursing Award. The 00s Christina Bargeron ’00 enjoys a successful career in the world of finance. She graduated from University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science in Finance in 2004. In 2010, she became a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and has worked for Janney Montgomery Scott LLC in Philadelphia. Chrissy is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Finance at the London School of Business. In her class, only five students from the US were accepted and Chrissy is the only female. As a side note, she loved being in London during the 2012 Olympics! On behalf of her three MMA alumnae daughters, Deborah Bigelow Crawford sent a few updates. “Holly Bigelow ’00 earned her MBA from State University of New York (SUNY) last August. Holly purchased a home in Philadelphia in May and is engaged to marry Scott Lean in May 2013. Holly works at Johnson and Johnson as a Resource Planning Specialist. Lindsey Bigelow Kowalski ’03 was married in September 2011 to Michael Kowalski. Lindsey graduated from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine as a D.O. in June and is currently doing her residency in Pittsburgh. Alisa Bigelow ’04 earned her MBA from the University of Pittsburgh in May 2012. She is currently working for SDLC Partners, a growing IT services firm, as its Marketing Coordinator. Lisa class notes resides in Pittsburgh, but is hoping to eventually relocate back to the Philadelphia area.” Samantha Ciccimaro Little ’01 married Jeremy Little on June 15, 2012 at La Salle High School Chapel in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. Amanda was inducted into Kappa Tau Alpha (KTA), the honor society for journalism and mass communication students. For her capstone senior project in Theatre, Amanda co-wrote, produced, and starred in a devised theater piece. The play “APPetite,” examines society’s obsession with technology and social media and how this addiction affects relationships and our own health. Amanda also traveled to Costa Rica to research her additional capstone senior project on medical tourism. Her work was featured in the Burlington Free Press, which is a local newspaper in Burlington, Vermont. Mary Anne Woody ’08 was honored by The University of Scranton during its undergraduate Class Night ceremony for academic achievement and service. She earned a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, in Biophysics with a minor in Mathematics. Mary Anne received the Professor Joseph P. Harper Award for Excellence in Physics. She was a member of Sigma Pi Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta honor societies. She was a Eucharistic minister and a member of the liturgical core team. Mary Anne was also a tutor for the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence for math and physics and participated in the Faculty Student Research Program. Mary Anne will attend Columbia University's Teachers College to obtain a master's degree in Physics and Deaf Education. Meghan Githens ’09 is the vice president for Hawk Women, an organization at Saint Joseph’s University that connects all women of the Saint Joseph’s community – students, mothers, alumnae, daughters, faculty, wives, friends, sisters, etc. – for networking and career development events. These donors take advantage of a unique opportunity to support Merion Mercy’s scholarship and financial aid programs and receive substantial tax credits. Many business donors, who pay Pennsylvania state income tax, are eligible for these generous tax credits. Donors who would like to qualify for this tax credit need only fill out a simple one-page application available through the MMA Development Office. Donors who commit to two consecutive year gifts qualify for a 90% tax credit. One-time donors receive a Pennsylvania tax credit of 75%. The program is available to businesses large and small, allowing for any size donation up to $400,000. EITC donations to Merion Mercy for the 2011-2012 school year range from $2,000 to $50,000.
