Air News March 2015 Page 2 THE FLIGHT LINE Donna Klein, chairman I'd like to start out with a couple of thank you's: We had a nice turnout for our February meeting, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. We were again able to get rid of some of our old possessions and replace them with someone else's. Madeleine and Deb Karas added to the fun (and to our coffers) by selling jewelry, scarves, purses, Arbonne products, etc. Thank you, Madeleine, for planning the meeting. In the past, we kept scrapbooks of Chapter activities and events, with articles and pictures, to provide a historic record. We stopped doing that quite a few years ago, due to the difficulty of finding volunteers with the time and desire to keep it up. Cynthia Madsen has taken it upon herself to assemble albums with most of the issues of Air News from the past 12 years or so. She brought them to the last 2 meetings, and they look really good. We appreciate the time and care she took in putting these books together. (Maybe we can, in the future, collect the CAC articles from Waypoint and the 99 News International, and similarly assemble them.) Now for a few random thoughts: Leslie Prellwitz is running for International Director. She is looking for feedback from our Chapter as to what concerns we might have that we would like her to bring to International, if she is elected. So, let her know your thoughts. You certainly have our support, Leslie, and we'll do all that we can to help you win. Don't forget about our campaign to rejuvenate and revitalize our Chapter. There is more information elsewhere in Air News. We already have received several great ideas. There will be rewards for the best one(s). Our Nominating Committee is looking for Members who would like to be Officers next year. If you are interested, contact Ruth Frantz, Leslie Prellwitz or Marlene Winters (or any Officer). Please get involved in your Chapter - volunteer to help with an event such as Girl Scout Badge Day; host or help with a monthly meeting; contact an old or new Member. As we say goodbye to a cold, snowy winter (the past is history), and look forward to warmer weather, longer days, and a return to flying (the future is a mystery), let's enjoy each day (today's a present!). I'LL SEE YOU AT AVIATION UNIVERSE! Report from the Birthplace Museum to the Ninety-Nines, Inc. Board of Directors last week - Our BIG news is we had applied for a Heritage Trust Fund Grant from the Kansas Historical Society in the amount of $57,600, which we would have to come up with 20% or $9,600. We were notified on Valentines Day that we were one of the recipients for the amount that we had asked for. This is for new storm windows which will save $$$$ on our heating and cooling bill. To insulate the basement perimeter and the duct work under the north porch crawl space and to tuck point the masonry foundation as needed and repair the basement window area. We are asking all of you to help us raise our share of the Grant as this is a very worthy project and will make the AEBM that much more energy efficient. YOU can be a part of this effort! Air News March 2015 Page 5 99 News Advertising Needed 99s, we need y our help. We are making a concentrated effort to increase advertising in the 99 News to make it more cost effective and to reduce the costs incurred with our return to 6 issues a year. Each of you either knows of a business that could benefit from advertising to our 7,000 print readers, our many thousands of internet readers, or knows someone who has a business that could benefit from the exposure. We need each of you to forward contact info for any and all of your favorite businesses to [email protected]. Or ask those businesses to contact me. We will work with them to grow their business. Aviation businesses are especially appropriate, but ads for watchmakers, jewelers, clothing retailers, cars, food, tools, travel, books, anything a 99 might buy and use are welcome, too. We especially would like ads for recruiting companies with positions available, aircraft and parts, along with upholstery, paint shops, avionics, etc. If you like the company, please share them with us. Really….we need your help! FAAST Blast — Week of Feb 23 – Mar 01, 2015 News Update Changes Coming to the Flight Service Program Recognizing a shift in users’ preferences for automated services, the FAA is changing its Flight Service operation to make it more efficient and reduce costs. The agency will continue to maintain the highest level of safety and none of these changes will affect core flight service safety functions such as search and rescue, emergency services, weather observation, NOTAM entry and dissemination, or pilot weather reports. Pilots are steadily shifting to automated and web-based tools to obtain services and Flight Service is already using this type of technology to eliminate underutilized and redundant services and reduce expenses. The FAA will phase in the changes to ease the transition for users.
