Chairman's Chat
This evening [23 Feb.] the SUSFA committee met and received reports
from the Sussex Clubs. I am glad to say that nearly all clubs are able
to report they are doing well, holding their numbers and getting new
callers (some of whom, I hope, will be able to come to the Forum on
29th March).
During the afternoon four of the committee visited Sedgwick Park
House, near Horsham, to consider it for the venue for the 2016
Playford Ball. I am pleased to say we were very impressed and have
booked provisionally for 4th June 2016.
Please come to the AGM in June and we can tell you more.

Smallfield New Years Eve Folk Dance
We had an enjoyable New Years Eve Folk Dance ably run by
Kate and Doug Eaton. We were able to donate £32.00 to
Sussex Pie and £110.00 to the Chestnut Tree House
Children's Hospice.
Everyone was dismayed when I said there won't be a 2015
event and maybe not for some time after that. This is due to
the lack of numbers; several members from the Horley &
Meadvale Club make the effort to support Folk Dances in
most parts of Surrey and Sussex. Alas roads in the most part
seem to run from and not to Smallfield!
We may try a Summer or Tea Dance to give folk a chance to
find us in daylight. You will discover not one narrow country
lane where you fear for the condition of your car. In fact if you
come on the B2036 [Balcombe Road], it's less than 3miles
from the Surrey and Sussex Crematorium! Hope to see you in
Smallfield one day, it's a pleasant village.

DANCING CHEEK TO CHEEK
I wonder how many of you watched this series of TV programmes on
BBC4 recently. Len Goodman (from Strictly Come Dancing) and Dr
Lucy Worsley (a historian and author) looked at the development of
social dance over the last few centuries. I learnt a lot. For example,
the minuet includes a movement that looks remarkably like 'Cecil Sharp
Siding'. I already knew that our own Queen Elizabeth loved American
square dancing when she was younger, but I learnt that Queen Victoria
was an ardent fan of Scottish country dancing.
Another interesting fact relates to the waltz hold, also known as the
ballroom hold. Originally in the waltz, dancers were not allowed to
cosy up so close to each other. The man would put his hands above
the lady's waist, she would put her hands on his shoulders, and they
would dance almost at arm's length.
Speed dating is nothing new. At the dance venue Almack's, single
young ladies and gentlemen were introduced, and used the dance to
converse. No more than two dances with the same partner! If a
gentleman remained single after two years, his membership was not
renewed. Georgette Heyer refers to Almack's in her Regency novels.
The influence of Playford's English Dancing Master, in its various
editions, was mentioned. The dance 'Hyde Park' was demonstrated. A
vivid portrayal of how clog dancing originated within the industrial
environment was enlightening, with the clog rhythms matching the
noises of the looms and other machinery.
There was much more, including how the polka came over here - 'heel
and toe', anyone? All in all, very interesting!
