HOPPIES now has a total of 71
stores in Botswana and still
growing. The latest addition to
the chain store is the Choppies Hyper
Northgate Mall which was officially
opened at the newly built North Gate
Mall near Sebele mall in Gaborone.
The store was opened this Tuesday,
the 29th of October 2014.
Botswana’s biggest retail group also
has 26 and 15 stores in South Africa and
Zimbabwe respectively. Speaking at the
official opening of the new Choppies
store, Group Chairman Festus Mogae
said they take their corporate social
responsibility seriously.
He said, “Every time we open shop
we carry along our corporate social
responsibility of donating goods to
either the old or disabled people in that
area or the office of the president. Today
such behavior will continue as it is part of
our culture and we will donate 10 wheel
chairs to the Office of the President to
help the disabled.”
Mogae said their generosity is a
deliberate move to ensure that the retail
chain store does not only profit from the
people but also empower others in the
process by paying rentals. The former
President of Botswana said opening
stores is a way of creating employment
for the local population.

the 7000 employees, 102 people are
those living with disabilities and we are
the only group that goes out there to
find such people so that they can earn a
living.”
Mogae said Choppies also contribute
to the people’s health and that
through the South African Professional
Management Review, which observes
how companies perform they were the
best overall company that does the most
to enhance the Presidential Task Group’s
Vision 2016.
“The same organization awarded
us the best overall retail stores that sell
different nutritious products. We also
came second in high esteem as good
corporate citizen based on corporate
social responsibility initiative and
investments over the past 12 months,”
said Mogae
Choppies is regarded as one of the
largest private sector employers in the
country and to add to their population of
employees, Choppies Hyper Northgate
Mall has already created 70 employment
opportunities for young Batswana who
wish to earn a living.
