pew card and place it in the offering plate or give it to a greeter. On
it you can indicate that you would like the clergy to call on you.
Out of respect for neighbors wishing for quiet time to pray before
the liturgy begins, please refrain from LOUD talking in the nave.

Laurel Hill Cemetery excursion: Because of the many regattas
coming up, which close Kelly Drive, the best date for the proposed
Laurel Hill Cemetery excursion is Sunday, April 26. We will plan on
that day unless there is inclement weather. Those who have signed
up should meet with Judy Buck-Glenn after the 10 AM service today
to make plans – time, car pools, route, etc. Laurel Hill will provide
us with a volunteer guide.
On April 21, 2014, the Episcopal Church Club of Philadelphia
welcomes the Reverend Jeffrey Ross as speaker to the Racquet Club,
215 S. 16th St, Philadelphia. He will present “Walking Along the
Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain.” Ross has served as Rector
of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes, Delaware, since August
2005. Join us for lunch and fellowship. The program will start with
social hour at 12 noon. The cost is $25.00 per person, including the
luncheon. Discounted parking is available at The Patriot Parking
Garage, 1616 Chancellor Street. For further information call our
Luncheons Chair, Raymond Shetzline, at 610-644-7776.
The Sunday School needs your help! A number of years ago, there
was a woman’s group at church, and they sponsored a child through
3
what was then the Christian Children’s Fund, now ChildFund.
When the group dissolved, the ongoing responsibility for the child
they had sponsored was shifted to the Sunday School, which was
already sponsoring a child. For many years, the Shrove Tuesday
Pancake Supper and money from children’s Sunday School
collections and Mite Boxes allowed us to continue to support two
children. However, the cost of supporting the children has risen, the
Sunday School collections have dwindled, and this year, because of
inclement weather, the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper made far
less than it usually does—besides lower attendance, the costs for
putting on the supper have also risen, but the requested donations
have not changed. Supporting two children through ChildFund costs
nearly $1000 a year, including Christmas and birthday gifts. The
Sunday School desperately needs your help—we are down to $35
and the next payment is due in June for the remainder of the year!
Any coins or cash put into the SMALL CHILDREN’S PEW
ENVELOPES goes to the ChildFund collection. Cheques made out
to Christ Church with “ChildFund Collection” in the memo will also
work, and be credited to you for tax purposes.
Seaman’s Ditty Bag collection for MARCH - For the 2015 Christmas
Ditty Bag delivery, we need men’s disposable razors, small sewing
kits (readily available at dollar stores) and FULL-Sized bars of
WRAPPED soap. There is a bin for the Seaman’s Institute Ditty Bag
collections under the shelf in the vestibule with the green doors.
Meetings this week: Thursday, Choir Rehearsal, 7:30 PM; Vestry
meets at 7:00 PM at the home of Judy Yorke.
Do you pledge to Christ Church? If you didn’t get a chance to fill out
a pledge card, now is an excellent opportunity. There are additional
pledge cards available at the back of church. You can also go to the
church website and fill out a pledge card online.
Would you like to establish a fund for Christ Church through your
estate planning? Your restricted gift will ensure the continuation of
the ministry of Christ Church and will benefit your parish friends
and family for generations to come. Please speak to the rector if you
would like assistance in establishing such a fund. You might also
consider a gift to our permanent endowment fund.

Do we have your email address??? So much of our correspondence
now is through email. If you have not been receiving weekly email
news bulletins and other important notifications, please be sure to let
the office know your email address, and update us on any changes.
You can also put it on a white pew card. Place it in the offering plate.
Children’s Pew Envelopes: All the money collected from children in
Sunday School and Children’s Chapel and from Lenten Mite Boxes
goes to support our two ChildFund children, Chanel and Jay-R. All
proceeds from the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper also go to these
children. There are special offering envelopes for children in the
pews. If your child is going to put money in the plate, please give
them a children’s pew envelope. Please note that ANY donation
made in these special envelopes will be credited to our ChildFund
children—you don’t have to be a child!
Pull-up Tabs: If you get pull-up tabs from beverage, soup or pet food
cans (including colored tabs), the Outreach Committee is collecting
tabs for Ronald McDonald House. There is a marked clear plastic
jar on the counter near the green doors where you can drop the tabs.
Activity bags for children can be found on a rack in the back of
church, under the memorial table. Bags with pink stickers are for
younger children – up to age 5 or so. Please take any activity your
child completes home with you and return the bags to the rack.
Please remember Christ Church in your will and estate planning. If
you need further information on how to make provisions for the
church, please speak to the rector.

A Note on Today’s Readings
The Second Sunday of Easter—Year B
On this Sunday of Easter we always have as the central reading the
account of Jesus’ appearance to the Apostles on Easter Day and on the
following Sunday. In that second appearance, Thomas, who had not been
with them the first time, comes to believe in the Lord’s resurrection and
acclaims Jesus as Lord and God.
The first reading on every Sunday in Eastertide is from the Acts of the
Apostles. This book about the life of the early Church as it lived in the
joy of the Lord’s resurrection tells us of the character of the early
Christians’ corporate life.
This year the second reading comes from the First Epistle of John. This
brief epistle is thought to have been written in the last decade of the first
century in the author’s old age. In it he reminds his people of the primary
characteristic of our Lord, his self-giving love. Our life in the risen Christ
is to live out that love for one another. John reminds us that our salvation
came by means of Jesus’ death and our baptism into his death.
Each Sunday of the Great Fifty Days is a time to explore the life we
share in Jesus Christ dying and rising, a life which begins for each of us
at our baptism and which is renewed in us each time we celebrate the
Eucharist.

Almighty and everlasting God, who in the Paschal mystery established
the new covenant of reconciliation: Grant that all who have been reborn
into the fellowship of Christ’s Body may show forth in their lives what
they profess by their faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and
reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Acts 4:32-35
All sit.
A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.
Now the whole group of those who believed were of one heart and soul,
and no one claimed private ownership of any possessions, but everything
they owned was held in common. With great power the apostles gave
their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was
upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as
owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was
sold. They laid it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to each as
any had need.

Ecce, quam bonum!
1 Oh, how good and pleasant it is, *
when brethren live together in unity!
2 It is like fine oil upon the head *
that runs down upon the beard,

and runs down upon the collar of his robe.
4 It is like the dew of Hermon *
that falls upon the hills of Zion.
5 For there the LORD has ordained the blessing: *
life for evermore.
Second Reading
1 John 1:1—2:2
A Reading from the First letter of John.
We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard,
what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched
with our hands, concerning the word of life—this life was revealed, and
we have seen it and testify to it, and declare to you the eternal life that
was with the Father and was revealed to us—we declare to you what we
have seen and heard so that you also may have fellowship with us; and
truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. We
are writing these things so that our joy may be complete. This is the
message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light
and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship
with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is
true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have
fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us
from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the
truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will
forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say
that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not
sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus
Christ the righteous; and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not
for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to
John.
Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors
of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the
Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.”
After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the
disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again,
“Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” When he
13
had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy
Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain
the sins of any, they are retained.” But Thomas (who was called the
Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the
other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them,
“Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the
mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.” A week
later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them.
Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and
said, “Peace be with you.” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here
and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not
doubt but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”
Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me?
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” Now
Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not
written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to
believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through
believing you may have life in his name.

Thanksgiving Over the Water
The Celebrant then says
People
Celebrant
People
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Celebrant
We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy
Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the
children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise.
In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by
the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death
and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.
We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with
Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are
reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we
bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them
in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water
Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit,
19
that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue
for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior.
To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and
for ever. Amen.
Maraya / Whitaker / Brayden Cole / Jenna Corinne, I baptize you in the
Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
When this action has been completed for all the candidates, the Bishop or Priest, at a
place in full sight of the congregation, prays over them, saying
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you
have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have
raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy
Spirit. Give them inquiring and discerning hearts, the courage to will and
to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and
wonder in all your works. Amen.
Then the Bishop or Priest places a hand on the person’s head, marking on the forehead
the sign of the cross [using Chrism if desired] and saying to each one
Maraya / Whitaker / Brayden Cole / Jenna Corinne, you are sealed by
the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ’s own for ever. Amen.
The organist now play processional music. The clergy, baptizands, parents and sponsors
process to the front of the church. Baptismal candles are now lighted from the paschal
candle.
The Celebrant then says
Let us welcome the newly baptized.

Offertory Anthem: The Easter Song of Praise - Richard Shepard
Representatives of the congregation bring the people’s offerings of bread and wine, and
money or other gifts, to the deacon or celebrant. The people stand while the offerings are
presented and placed on the Altar.
Great Thanksgiving
The people remain standing.
The Celebrant proceeds
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give
thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of
your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who
was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his
21
death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won
for us everlasting life.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels
and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to
proclaim the glory of your Name:
The people stand or kneel.
The Celebrant continues
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you
have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your
people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the
Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to
be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the
world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to
stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out
of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and
when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples,
and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for
22
the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and
when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of
you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and
for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for
the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O
Father,
Celebrant and People
We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;
The Celebrant continues
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of
all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts
that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of
the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be
acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the
fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring
us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the
everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author
of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all
honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
The Celebrant then continues
And now, as our Savior
Christ has taught us,
we are bold to say,
People and Celebrant
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
23
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Breaking of the Bread
A period of silence is kept.
Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
The Celebrant says
The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that
Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with
thanksgiving.
All baptized persons, whatever your denominational affiliation, are welcome to receive
Holy Communion at our altar. You may stand at the altar rail if your knees do not permit
kneeling. Please assist the chalice bearer by gently holding the base of the chalice.
Please do not hold the top of the chalice. If you wish, you may intinct (dip) the host
(consecrated bread) in the chalice. If you do not wish to receive the wine, fold your arms
over your chest. Baptized children may receive with parent's permission, otherwise they
24
will receive a blessing.
Hymnal 206
O sons and daughters, let us sing
After Communion, the Celebrant says
Let us pray.
Celebrant and People
Eternal God, heavenly Father,
25
you have graciously accepted us as living members
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
and you have fed us with spiritual food
in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace,
and grant us strength and courage
to love and serve you
with gladness and singleness of heart;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Blessing
The priest blesses the people, saying
The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus
Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the
everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his
will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight; and the
blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be
among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
