From The Prez
The 2014/15 Surf Life Saving Patrol season has come to an end. Some
of you may say it’s about time. Some may also be sad because it
brings with it the end of Summer.
As a club, I believe we have had a great season both from a patrolling
point of view and also competition. Through the season we were subject to 3 patrol inspections and each patrol inspected performed extremely well. We managed to carry out all our patrol obligations and
also supply much needed water cover at the many competitions
throughout the season. We have seen a new batch of carnival officials
gain their awards and many parents step in and help around the junior area.
2014/15 proved to be one of Christies Beach’s most successful competition seasons in many
years starting with the Junior division gaining numerous medals and a large number of finalists at State Championships and also competing in new events put on by other life saving
clubs along the coast. Our Senior and Masters competitors also had one of their best years
in a long time. I hope we can continue to grow from here. For the club to continue to grow
we need to focus on building teams. Anyone can be involved to make a team.
Although you may think the season has ended, it has only transitioned from Summer to
Winter sports mode. Over the next few months, the IRB competitions will kick off, with the
State Championship event being held on our beach on Sunday July 5. Also, the indoor pool
competition is planned for the weekend of June 27th and 28th. There is ample opportunity
for you to stay active and not hibernate through the winter months. Remember, Summer
will not be too far away.
Take some time out to relax and get those jobs done around the house that you have been
putting off, but don’t be a stranger. There will be a number of functions throughout the winter months to enjoy.

From The Club Captain
The month of March is one of the busiest months in the surf lifesaving
season with the State Titles being held for Masters, Junior and Senior
competitors, all while still continuing with patrolling the beach. Not to
forget about our Masters Boat competitors who competed on the last
week end in February.
This season our Masters State Titles were held at Christies Beach and
our team continued to compete well with several medals spread over
the beach and water areas. Our team was represented by Steven Barns,
Russell de Leeuw, Earl de Leeuw, Sam West, Nathan Amos, Tina Hards,
Matt Lee, Marco Ozzella, Sven Mollenar, Marco’s brother Johnno, James Trezona, Vince
McMullan, Jane Bristow, Colin East, Grant Brown, Amanda Miller, Rob McKay, Julie Locker,
LeRoy Bang and Paul Castle. It was great to have a few new faces join in and have a great
time. We really hope that some more members can be brave and join in next year, especially
in the female area where we would love to make up more teams. The Masters Boat team,
Mark Gregory, Chris Heath, Paul Bristow, Steve Hatowskyi and Ron Harwood competed at Aldinga Beach. Well done to the team who did well in all their races finishing a close 4th in their
final race.
The Junior State Titles were held at Pt Elliot in some tough conditions. Overall, the team did a
great job at flying our Black and Yellow colours with several medals won in the u13 age group
as well as lots of finals and semi-finals made. This would not have been possible without the
help of all the parents supporting their children and the club. Thank you to all involved.
Senior State Titles started extremely well with Day 1 being held at Pt Noarlunga a fortnight
before the main competition weekend held at South Port. Our team consisted of Brooke East,
Cooper Bristow, Lachlan Campbell, Laura Campbell, Harrison Hards, Billy Gregory, Dannion
Hards, Karla Brown, Charly McMullan, Rebecca Rogers, Jess Tingey, Shonie Nurmi, Patrick
Campbell, Lee Heath, Russell de Leeuw, Earl de Leeuw, Sam West and Tina Hards.
Our U17 girls stood out in the competition with Karla Brown winning a GOLD medal in the
U17 Tube Rescue Race and together with Charly McMullan, winning GOLD in the U17 Board
Rescue. The beach competitors also made it through their heat to make the finals. Our club
also competed for the first time in the Rescue Tube Rescue Race. Without much training, Karla, Rebecca, Jess and Shonie came 4th gaining knowledge that will help them in the future for
this event. Day 2 and 3 saw the rest of our team compete. Overall, Charly won GOLD in the
U17 female Ski, Karla won GOLD in the U17 female Swim, BRONZE in Open female Swim and
together with Jess, all three girls won BRONZE in U19 Taplin. Several younger members came
up to make up teams in both the U15 area as well as the Open Male area. Overall, Christies
Beach had a very successful State Titles with lots of finals being made in both the water area
as well as having competitors making finals in the beach area. We hope that we continue to
grow in both areas in the new few years.
Thank you to all the coaches who spend their nights training the team and all the officials
who have spent their time over the summer at junior, senior and masters carnivals to ensure
we are able to have a team on the beach.

As the summer competition season comes to an end, we wish Karla Brown and Charly
McMullan all the best as they compete in the Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships this
week. The club are very proud of all your achievements, and we hope you are successful in
achieving your goals over the Aussies competition. Good Luck!

From The Junior Chairperson
Another season of Nippers has come to an end and wow, did we manage to fit a lot of activities and competitions into a shorter than usual (thanks to the weather) season. Activities included Surf Volley which was a great hit, 4 Junior Carnivals, State qualifiers, 2 days of State Titles, a Nipperthon, Mid Coast Challenge, Wave Warriors, Seacliff Swim Paddle Run, 2 Board
and Ski carnivals for our older juniors and some very challenging Saturday beach conditions.
Our season will conclude with our presentation and Nipper Sleepover this weekend. A very
big thankyou must go out to all of our volunteer trainers, Age Group Managers, water cover
and Saturday Patrols because nippers certainly wouldn’t run without you.
Remember Thursday night swimming will continue throughout the year so come down to Noarlunga pool from 7 - 8pm during school terms all year and get ready for the Surf Lifesaving
Pool Rescue competition on the 27th and 28th of June to be held at Marion pool. Thank you
also to Chris Goddard who will be retiring from coaching the littlies, now that the summer
season is at an end, after 17 years of voluntary service. At this stage we do not have anyone
to replace Chris so swimming will only be available to those club members who are confident
to swim laps. We are looking at providing some coaching to seniors and parents who would
like to get some swimming tips from our coach Rob Mackay.
As my son Angus, heads into his last year of Nippers, I too will be stepping down from my position as Junior Chairperson at the next AGM so that my successor will have next season
working with me to learn the role with plenty of assistance. I plan to take on the role of junior
registrar and competition officer for next year so that the new junior Chairperson can focus
more on activities and support for Age Group managers, Junior members and their parents.
Finally – although this season is over, the junior committee will continue to meet throughout
the year to begin planning for next season. Parents are welcome to join the committee on the
second Tuesday of every month at the club at 7.30pm. Please keep an eye on your emails and
the facebook page for updates on events happening over the winter and for next season start
dates. Thanks for a great season!
Linda Mackay,
Junior Chairperson.

Junior State Titles
What a fantastic Junior State Titles we had at Port Elliot on the weekend of the 21st and 22nd
of March. Not only did the club have the best medal tally it’s seen for several years, we also
had some outstanding achievements and special moments from our other competitors. I am
so proud to be a member of a club where everyone pulls together and works as a team. Some
of our age group managers ran between two age groups. I don’t know how many miles myself and Kate Southern walked from one end of the beach to the other for photographs and
our water cover and officials had to deal with some interesting conditions and not much
beach at times. It was great to finally have some surf at a junior carnival and our kids got to
show off some skills learnt on our beach. Thank you to Port Elliott SLSC for providing such a
great venue. For the second year in a row we also managed to make up teams in all age
groups with some of the kids getting right out of their comfort zone so their mates could
compete. This was especially great for the U9's and the U14's who have not been able to
