Happy Hobbies

A Healthy Memory
We all need a hobby to keep our minds
active, stimulated and creative whilst
we’re away from work. Hobbies come
in all shapes and sizes and can vary
from a couple of hours per week to
occupying a whole weekend.
A recent study suggests that engaging
in a hobby, like knitting, making a
patchwork quilt, or even reading a
book can delay the onset of dementia.
In the study from the Mayo Clinic in
Minnesota, nearly 200 people ages
70 - 89 with mild memory problems
were compared to a group who had
no impairment. Researchers asked the
volunteers about their daily activities
within the past year, and how mentally
active they had been from 50 – 65
years old; those who had been busy
reading or engaging in craft hobbies
had a 40% reduced risk of memory
impairment.
Currently, there are 700,000 people
with dementia in the UK, according to
the Alzheimer's Society. As there is yet
no cure for Alzheimer's disease or any
other type of dementia, delaying the
onset of dementia by five years would
halve the number of deaths from the
condition, saving 30,000 lives a year.
So, there’s never been a better reason
to get creative. Knitting has steadily
increased in popularity over the last
decade or so and 21st century knitters
are no longer stereotypical fuddy-duddy
grannies relaxing in an armchair;
On Our Front Cover:
T
he start of spring often brings with it the
creation of new life. If you, or someone
you know, is expecting the pitter-patter of
tiny feet then why not order them some hand
knitted clothes from Heather Reid.
Based in Kirriemuir, Scotland, Heather knits
a wide range of clothes, blankets, and
accessories for babies of all ages, as well as
knitting selected items, such as cardi’s and
jumpers, for adults.
“I’ve been knitting for as long as I can
remember,” Heather told Aspire. “But, 13
years ago my husband and I were driving
up to Kirriemuir when we saw that the local
wool shop was up for sale, so we talked
about it and I decided to buy it. Not too long
ago the local haberdashery shop closed so
we’ve increased our stock to include a wide
selection of haberdashery items, such as
ribbons, threads and buttons.”
Heather’s shop, Wool & Babywear, is located
on Glengate in the centre of Kirriemuir, and
sells everything you could need for knitting,

from wool and yarn (including famous brands
such as Sirdar & Style Craft) to accessories
(such as knitting needles and embroidery
threads) and patterns. Heather said:
“Unfortunately, we can’t stock everything,
so if you can’t find what you’re looking for
in-store, just ask and I’ll try and track it down
for you.”
The majority of people who order handknitted items from Heather are from her local
area, but Heather is more than happy to take
orders from further afield over the phone.
She explained: “People who want me to knit
something for them usually drop into the shop
and pick out a pattern and colour and pay
a small deposit. Then either myself or one of
my three other knitters, hand-knits their order,
which is usually completed with seven days,
although it may take longer if the yarn/wool
they’ve chosen is not in stock. I am happy to
take orders for either knitted items, or even
stock from my shop, over the telephone.
Stock is posted out the next day, unless it’s
not in stock and then it’s posted out as soon
as it comes in, while hand-knitted items are
posted out as soon as they’re completed.”
As each item is hand-knitted and totally
bespoke and individual, prices vary - call
Heather for an accurate quotation. Heather
also offers a range of machine-knitted items
for adults and babies.
Finally, Heather added: “People should come
to us because we know what we’re doing.
My team of knitters are excellent and every
item is always well finished and of the highest
quality. I’ve also had lots of experience so
can help with any problems people may be
having.”

Despite having only opened their
doors on December 1st 2008,
Needles and Pins have already
cemented themselves within
the community for both knitters
and non-knitters alike. Created
by Michelle Seville, Needles and
Pins sell an array of products
and accessories for sewing
and knitting from their shop on
Leicester Road in Narborough.
“I’ve always been a keen knitter
and always dreamed of owning
my own business. So, when I got
fed up of having to travel into
Leicester city centre, or even
further afield, to pick up bits and
pieces, I realised there was a gap
in the market for a shop in this
area that sells haberdashery and
yarns. I was right and people are
beginning to find me,” Michelle
said.
Needles and Pins stock three
different makes of yarns from
famous names such as Sirdar,
they’re fashion-conscious women of
all ages. In fact it was French fashion
designer, Sonia Rykiel, who brought
knitwear into fashion in the swinging
60’s and they’ve been seen as clothes
in their own right (and not just an
accessory to woven items) ever since.
There are so many things you can make
when knitting, from a basic scarf (if you
start now it should be ready in time for
winter ’09, even with the slowest knitters
knitting) to a unique jumper, or more
complicated items such as socks and
dresses. And, there’s an array of fresh
and exciting wools and fibres, yummy
yarns, and lovely laceweights available
to knit with.
Making a patchwork quilt was also
identified in the US study as a hobby
that can delay the onset of dementia.
Quilting can produce some stunning,
unique pieces that complement any
room. From wall hangings to patchwork
bed quilts, the perfect handmade quilt
can turn your house into a home. There
a hundreds of mouth-watering fabrics
ideal for quilting, but they should all be
100% cotton to ensure your quilt is as
soft and comfortable as possible.
Everyone knows that creative crafts are
a great way to relax and unwind, but
now they have added health benefits
too. So, give them a go - you might
just add years to your life, as well as
producing some stunning textiles!
Needles & Pins
Style Craft and King Cole, as well
as a wide range of haberdashery
items, such as buttons, ribbons
and threads. If that wasn’t
enough, Needles and Pins also
stock sewing machines, sewing
boxes and knitting bags, as well
as a range specifically for children
who love to knit or sew.
Michelle added: “We cover a
wide range of prices, stocking
everything from cheap wool ideal
for practising, up to expensive
wool for making luxurious scarves
or jumpers. I also sell ‘first knitting
kits’ for children who’d like to
indulge in this great hobby. I’m
constantly expanding my range of
products.”
With such an array of items for
sale, the knitters and sewers
amongst you will no longer have
to travel for miles to find excellent
wools, yarns and accessories –
you can now see and touch the
items before buying them.
“If I haven’t got something in
stock, I will endeavour to get
it,” Michelle said. “I’m also
available to help people who have
any problems – they can bring
their knitting in and I can help
them either get started or move
forward. I get all sorts of people
coming into the shop, from all
walks of life.”

Threads of Life was the obvious choice
for Aspire’s Certificate of Recognition for
Hidden Gem, thanks to the array of yarns,
wools and accessories on offer.
Having opened their doors to the public
on December 1st last year, Threads of
Life in Castle Donington have gone from
strength to strength. The brain child of
keen knitter Sue Forshaw, who has been
knitting on and off for the last 50 years,
Threads of Life is a modern day wool shop,
stocking an amazing array of wonderful
wools, yummy yarns, and necessary
accessories to cater for knitters of all ages
and abilities.
Threads of Life is an ‘Aladdin’s Cave’
filled to the brim with yarns and wools
from all the famous names, such as Sirdar,
Rowan, Fyberspates, Debbie Bliss, Bergere
de France and many, many more. They
also stock knitting pins, circular knitting
needles, double-pointed needles, cable
needles, crochet hooks, stitch holders,
row counters, etc. as well as ribbons,
buttons, threads and much more.
Senior Sales Executive, Elaine Ellis, said:
“As you can see from the images of Sue’s
shop, Threads of Life has EVERYTHING
you could possibly need for knitting, and
as she’s only been open for five months,
I imagine not many knitters outside of
Castle Donington know about this knitting
haven. So our recognition is not only to
reward Sue’s hard work, but to also make
more people aware that this delightful
and traditional wool shop exists.”

Easter Treats
This Sunday (April 5th) is Palm Sunday, which means
the countdown to Easter is on. Palm Sunday is the
day Christians believe Jesus rode into Jerusalem. As
he entered the city, people lay down their cloaks and
branches of trees before him to show respect. In the Bible
Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem is narrated in Zechariah 9:9-10.
Nowadays, people often mark this day by receiving palm
leaves, often tied into the shape of a cross and given out
in churches.
The countdown to Easter means that’s it isn’t long until
you can enjoy Hot Cross Buns. These are eaten on Good
Friday (April 10th) and represent the day that Jesus was
crucified. Following the betrayal of one of his disciples
– Judas – Jesus was arrested and following many trials,
he was sentenced to death. Jesus was forced to carry
his own cross to Golgotha, where he was crucified with
two other criminals. After three hours of hanging on
the cross in pain, he gave up his soul to the heavens.
Consequently, there was an earthquake following this;
along with a tomb being broke open and the temples
curtain being ripped from top to bottom. This day is also
known as Holy Friday, Great Friday or Black Friday.
If you fancy having a go at making your own Hot Cross
Buns this year, Aspire have once again teamed up with
our resident Chef, Neil Walker, of Appetite at Abbey
Leisure & Sports Club in Leicester…

the brainchild of Teresa Walters, a

wonderful world of patchworking.
She told Aspire: “I had my own
haberdashery business for almost

big 4-0, I decided it was time for
a career change. So, I sold the
business and trained as a nurse,

discovered patchworking in my last
year of training and was hooked!
However, it wasn’t enough; I missed
helping people with their creative
crafts, so I decided to start my own
online store, something I could fit
in around my new career. The rest
is history.”
At the moment, Patchwork
Inspirations only stock cotton
fabrics, all be it a large and varied
collection, ranging from plain
colours, right through to bold and
bright patterns. These are available
in three measurements, all of which
are 44 inches wide: Fat ¼, ½ Metre,

“I am hoping to add to the range
soon, but I wanted to see how the
fabrics go,” Teresa added. “I have
over 100 designs of fabric but not
all of them are available online, so
if you don’t see something you like,

centre and put the sugar and lemon zest in the well. Pour
on the ferment starter.
Ingredients
3. Gradually draw in the flour and mix vigorously, then
knead to a smooth, elastic dough.
For the ferment starter:
4. Carefully work in the mixed dried fruit. Shape the
dough into a ball, put it in a warm, greased bowl, cover
with a clean tea towel and leave to rise in a warm place
for one hour.
1 large egg, beaten
215ml/7½fl oz warm water
15g/½oz fresh yeast
1 tsp sugar
55g/2oz strong white flour
5. Turn out the dough and knead to knock out any air
bubbles and give an even texture. Shape it into a ball
again, put back into the bowl, cover and put back to rise
for another 30 minutes.
For the dough:
6. Turn out the dough again and divide into 12 even
pieces. Shape them into buns and leave to rest for a few
minutes on the work surface covered with the tea towel.
450g/1lb strong white flour
1 tsp salt 2 tsp ground mixed spice
85g/3oz butter cut into cubes
85g/3oz sugar
1 lemon, grated, zest only
170g/6oz mixed dried fruit
2 tbsp plain flour
oil, for greasing
1 tbsp golden syrup, gently heated, for glazing
7. Place the buns on a lightly greased baking sheet.
Slightly flatten each bun and then cut into quarters,
cutting almost all the way through the dough, so that as
each bun rises, it has a well-marked cross on it.
8. Grease a large polythene bag and place the tray with
the buns in it and tie the end. Put in a warm place and
leave to rise for 40 minutes.
Method
1. Prepare the ferment starter for the dough by combining
the beaten egg with enough warm water to give
approximately 290ml/½ pint of liquid. Whisk in the yeast,
sugar and flour, cover and put in a warm place for 30
minutes.
2. make the buns: sieve the flour, salt and spice into a
large mixing bowl and rub in the butter. Make a well in the
9. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 240C/475F/Gas 8. Make
a paste for the crosses on the buns with the plain flour
and two tbsp cold water. Mix until it is soft enough to pipe
through a nozzle.
10. Remove the polythene bag and pipe a cross on each
bun. Bake the buns for 8 -12 minutes or until risen and
golden. Brush the buns with hot golden syrup as soon as
they are ready. Cool on a wire rack.
Mmmmmmmm…
Finally, Teresa added: “I believe I
offer an excellent range of fabrics
and have something to suit every
taste and requirement. I’m always
happy to talk to customers and help
them with any problems they might
be having, either making their quilt
or deciding what fabric to choose.”

Cervical Cancer

Th
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for
the last six months, you can’t have failed
to see the headlines surrounding reality
TV star Jade Goody and her battle with
cervical cancer, which she lost on Mother’s
Day. Jade’s plight has increased public
awareness of this terrible disease, which
affects 2,800 women every year.
The ‘Jade Goody Effect’ has lead to a
massive increase in the number of women
turning up for cervical smears; a large
percentage of these women are in the most
hard to reach age group - 25 to 35 year old
women, who believe the disease only affects
old women.
Aspire has decided to take a closer look at
this terrible disease and the calls for the
age of cervical screening to be lowered to
20, as it is in Scotland and Wales…
Around 2,800 new cases of cervical cancer
are diagnosed each year, but about 24,000
women are treated for severely abnormal
cells picked up through cervical screening.
Cervical screening has been available in the
UK since 1967. About 4.4 million women
are invited for a cervical smear each year
in England, but last year only 3.4 million
turned up. It’s vital that more women go for
their cervical smear test as early detection
and treatment can prevent abnormal cells
developing into cancer.
Although women 25 - 49 years old are
invited for a cervical smear every three
years, cancer of the cervix can take many
years to develop, so it’s important to know
8 ASPIRE
the signs and symptoms. The most common
symptom of cervical cancer is bleeding from
the vagina at other times than when you are
having a period.
You may have bleeding:
• Between periods
• After or during sex
• At any time if you are past your menopause
Some women also have:
• A vaginal discharge that smells unpleasant
• Discomfort or pain during sex - ‘dyspareunia’
Although there are many other conditions
that cause these symptoms, most of them
much more common than cervical cancer,
you should go to your doctor straight away
if you have any of these symptoms. You
probably don’t have cancer, but if you do,
the sooner you are treated, the more likely
you are to be cured and usually the less
treatment you will need to have.
Going for your smear test is vital – the
statistics speak for themselves. For women
aged between 25 and 49, a smear every
three years prevents 84 cases out of every
100 that would develop into cancer without
screening. But, a smear every five years (for
women aged 50 - 64) would only prevent 73
out of 100 cases.
As cervical cancer is the second most
common cancer in women under 35 years
old, numerous people are now calling for the
minimum age of screening to be lowered to
20 years old. The original cervical cancer
screening programmes across the UK
screened women from the ages of 20 to
64. The NHS in England altered the age
of screening because cervical cancer is
very rare before the age of 25. However,
since Jade’s death at just 27 years old,
high profile organisations, such as The Sun
newspaper, are calling for the age to be
lowered from 25 to 20 years old in line with
the rest of Britain; in Wales, Scotland and
Ireland, they are still screening from 20
years old until more evidence comes in on
the effects of treatment for abnormal cells
under 25 years old.
If you’re under 25 and worried, the best
advice Aspire can give is to make sure you
begin having regular smears as soon as you
are 25 if you are sexually active. If you are
under 25 and are extremely concerned, talk
to your GP or go to a well woman clinic.
30% of cervical cancers are associated with
other high risk HPV types.
Last autumn, girls aged 12 to 13 were
offered the HPV vaccine. Girls have three
injections over 6 months given by a nurse. A
two-year ‘catch up’ programme also started
in autumn 2008, to vaccinate girls aged
between 13 and 18. Hopefully, this vaccine
will eliminate as much as 70% of cervical
cancer cases, but we won’t know exactly
how successful the programme has been for
around 20 years.
Information taken from
http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.
asp?page=138
There is hope for future generations,
thanks to the introduction of the HPV
vaccine, which protects against the Human
Papilloma Virus. There are over 100
different types of the virus, which can
increase the risk of developing cervical
cancer. Most women infected with HPV

Dig Deep
During
The Recession
There were over 200,000 registered charities in the UK at the start of 2005, and
that number has been growing ever since. All are worthy causes, helping vulnerable
individuals, less fortunate than ourselves both here in the UK, and abroad. These
charities do such good, from researching common, but fatal, illnesses to helping victims
Donate Today
Why not donate to the numerous registered charities on this page charity, who
depend on donations from people like you.
Please help by pledging a donation.
Amount £5 of war or natural disasters get back on their feet. Charities work cannot continue without
the generous donations of the general public.
However, it seems that the recession has done little to stop people donating. Red Nose
Day 2009 culminated in a night of hilarious comedy and moving documentary films on
BBC One on Friday 13th March. So far the amazing British public have raised £65, 699,
850 – give yourselves a well-earned pat on the back!
You must still remember the smaller, little-known charities who simply cannot survive this
crippling recession without your kind generosity. But, how do you decide which one to
give your hard earned cash to?
Another excellent way to make sure your chosen charity continues their excellent work
even after your death is through Remember a Charity in your will www.rememberacharity.org.uk. Only one in seven UK wills contain any kind of
charitable gift. People simply do not realise this is such an effective and easy way to
support their favourite causes. Without gifts in wills, some charities would simply not exist.
Others would have to make dramatic cuts and very hard decisions. The World would be
a very different, a very cold place.
If you’re still not sure which charity is for you, then check out
www.guidestar.org.uk, which can help you search for a cause that’s close to your heart.
Lots and lots of people donate to charities that are close to their hearts. For example
if your mother had breast cancer you would no doubt get behind national cancer
campaigns such as Tickled Pink, or if your life was saved as a child by your local air
ambulance you may choose to donate a percentage of your wages each month to
keeping them going. You may even have been spotted sporting the hottest fashion trend
last summer in the form of a wristband to support many of the hard working charities and
foundations worldwide.
Alternatively, instead of giving up some cash, you could give up your time instead. There
are plenty of ways and means of aiding your charity. Start off by contacting a charity
representative and ask them about the best ways to get involved. There’s no better way
to help than taking part in a charity’s organised event. You just have to look through the
pages of Aspire, to see the many activities going on across the country. From fun days,
to running, there’s no better way to feel good about yourself, while raising money at the
same time. You can even enter into some of the major events this summer, including the
Edinburgh Marathon and The Great North Run, and plenty of charities still have places
available!
Many people don’t realise their local air ambulance isn’t government funded. By
donating a percentage of your wages each month to your local air ambulance you can
rest assured in the knowledge that it’ll be there if you, or your loved ones, ever need it.
Northamptonshire is covered by The Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance
and Leicestershire’s air space is covered by The County Air Ambulance.
If you feel you have more to give, then most organisations welcome regular volunteers
to help with the running of an office or different events. Even if it’s just a few hours in the
week or after work, your time can mean a lot to someone else.

We all want the best for our children. Finding the right
school for your child is never easy. The right environment,
that allows your child to develop and ultimately thrive, will
give them the very best start to life. A school that will not
only equip your child with all the knowledge they need
to make the best of themselves, but also one that allows
them to work on their social and life skills, will benefit
them greatly.
responsible attitude to school work, development of social
responsibility, and extra-curricular activities.
By choosing high quality care before your child goes to
school, you will be putting them in good stead for school
life. There are numerous nurseries in the region that not
only look after your child while you’re out at work, but
also educate them, enabling your child to be one step
ahead of their classmates once they reach the classroom.
They will already be used to the structure of the school
day, as well as being without mummy or daddy, so
therefore should adapt much quicker and with fewer
problems.
The smaller class sizes seen in independent schools
benefit all the children, no matter what their level of
intelligence is. Teachers can set work for the quicker
students, whilst having time to explain procedures to less
mature students in a different manner so they understand
the work. As teachers will be extremely familiar with
the children and where they are in regards to class
work, parents can be advised immediately if there are
any concerns, enabling each child to fulfil his/her own
potential, both academically and socially.
The benefits of an independent education have always
been up for discussion, but with more and more parents
choosing to educate their child within an independent
environment, 671,000 children in around 2,600
independent schools in the UK (http://www.isc.co.uk/
TeachingZone_SectorStatistics.htm), the benefits are
clearly outweighing the negatives.
At the end of the day, choosing the school in which your
child will spend the best years of their life should be a
joint decision; so once you’ve decided on a shortlist of
schools, visit them with your child. This will enable you to
see how they react to
the surroundings and
if they’ll be happy there!
The all-round education provided by independent schools
enables pupils to achieve their full potential. Although
there is more freedom within the curriculum, there are
specialist teachers in most subjects, so each child can
excel in certain areas of the curriculum.
There are numerous reasons for choosing to educate your
child in an independent school, including: small classes
with individual attention, high standards of education and
examination results, good discipline, encouragement of a

weddings
A stunning 16th Century, Grade II listed, three-star

Going To The Chapel…
If you’ve recently taken the plunge and got engaged, Aspire
would like to offer our ‘Congratulations’ to the happy
couple. However, once the initial glow has died down and
your face no longer aches from smiling 24 hours a day, it’s
time to get planning. Even from an early age, every woman
dreams of the perfect wedding, so with so much to do and
so much to plan, Aspire is here to guide you in your first
three steps…
Step 1
Decide on your date
Unless you’re planning a long engagement, you’ll need
to decide upon a prefer date to tie the knot. Do you see
yourself as a summer or spring bride? Maybe even a winter
bride – whatever season you choose, the best venues get
booked up years in advance, so if you have your heart set
on a particular venue, you may have to be flexible with the
date.
Step 2
Work out your budget
With the average wedding costing around £20,000, it’s
easy to get carried away when planning your wedding, but
by setting your budget early on, you can avoid spending
more than you can afford.
Step 3
Choose your venue
Do you want a religious ceremony or would you prefer a
civil ceremony? And where have you envisaged partying the
night away at your reception? If you decide to have both
your ceremony and reception are in the same place, it will

pampered and special. It’s for this reason that Aspire have awarded Jane and the
team at both Candy Heads salons a Certificate of Recognition for Ultimate Pampering
Experience.
For all you brides-to-be out there, Candy Heads will be throwing open the doors of
Castle Hotel in Kirby Muxloe on Sunday 19th April at 5pm for a hair party in aid of
Prostaid and you are all invited. Jane says: “People don’t realise how fantastic they
can feel by getting their hair done professionally for a special occasion and this night
is about showing you how gorgeous they can make you look. The sweeties will be
demonstrating all sorts of creations for brides, prom and party goers or for you, simply
because you want to look better than everybody else!”

Home Sweet Home
An Innovative Way To Extend Your Home
The Garden House
It’s the British dream to own your own
home, but with the housing market
almost at a standstill (the first time in 20
years), owning your slice of this dream is
becoming more and more difficult. So,
if you’re already on the property ladder,
consider yourself lucky and make the most
of your home, whether you own a new
build, character cottage, or 1950’s semi.
Paul Castle
Scoops Certificate of Recognition
The housing crisis means increasing
numbers of people are choosing to
improve their existing home, rather than try
to move to another. If you haven’t got the
cash do make big scale changes, but still
want to make your home feel, and look,
like new, Aspire have a few inexpensive
solutions…
In The Living Room - The living room is the
ideal place to make a design investment.
Firstly, give walls a fresh lick of paint
with a colour you’re not likely to tire of
quickly and clean any dirty woodwork,
like skirting boards and door frames,
with sugarsoap. You’re now ready to give
your living room the facelift it needs with
accessories: cushions, throws, rugs, lamps,
photoframes, mirrors and candles are all
inexpensive items that can instantly update
a room with minimal effort.
In The Kitchen - This is the room that
usually requires the most expense to
change, but this needn’t be the case; a
lick of paint and new door handles on
units and draws can breathe instant life
into a drab and dated kitchen. If you can
afford to make a significant change, the
best investment would be to get rid of old
flooring, such as vinyl and carpet tiles and
replaces them with modern ceramic tiles or
even a new wooden floor.
In The Bathroom - With all the steam,
water, and general humidity, mould can
grow quickly in a bathroom, so clean or
change your shower curtain, freshen up tile
grout (with grout cleaner or a grout pen),
and replace any old/dirty/broken shower
heads and taps.
In The Bedroom - Clear out clutter and give
walls a fresh lick of paint. If you haven’t
the time for that, why not invest in new
bedlinen, curtains/blinds and cushions,
as well as adding a few contemporary
accessories, such as candles, photo frames
and a full length mirror.

Established for 14 years, The Garden House offers you the perfect way to
add value to your home, courtesy of a garden building. Whether you need the
extra space for an office, guest accommodation, or simply as a place in which
teenagers can hide away, then The Garden House is the company to call,
Director, Nicholas Collins explained. “We offer a complete range of
options and designs to ensure your garden room complements your existing
surroundings. We’ve worked very hard over the last 14 years to make the
company a success, producing original and stylish buildings for people to enjoy
for many years.”
The Garden House design and installation process is quite simple; a member
of The Garden House team will visit your chosen site to discuss your building
requirements, along with any other issues that may arise, such as foundation
work and planning requirements. Designed, and built, to typical housing
specifications, you’ll find The Garden House buildings sturdy, and superbly
insulated ensuring your comfort all year round. All buildings come with a 10year guarantee, but are designed with a life expectancy in excess of 50 years.
“We’re a family run business. All of our buildings are designed and
manufactured by our own team in England, as are our installations,” Nicholas
explained. “Although we’re based in Kent and the majority of our business
takes places in the south, we’re a nationwide company, happy to travel the
length and breadth of Britain to manufacture and install your dream garden
house. Although the majority of our builds don’t need planning permission,
there are some that do. This isn’t due to the actual building customers want to
erect in their garden, but is usually down to the area in which the customer lives
i.e. a conservation area. However, if this does crop up, we provide a FREE of
charge service to deal with all the paperwork, and stress, of obtaining planning
permission.”
So, why not extend your home today with minimal fuss?

There are numerous ways to give your home a bit of a facelift, some of which cost much
more than others. If you’ve recently given your bedroom, living room, or even your loft
conversion a lick of paint, Aspire have found the perfect finishing touch - a painting by
Paul Castle, winner of our Certificate of Recognition for Quality Products.
Paul is an independent artist, illustrator
and picture framer who has over 30
years experience producing high-quality
one-offs. After leaving school at 15,
Paul attended the Luton School of Art to
indulge his passion, eventually leaving
and beginning his career as a technical
illustrator. Paul studied for five years as
part of a City and Guilds course while he
was working. Paul recalls always having
a passion for drawing and being known
amongst his teachers and classmates
as the boy who ‘draws houses in the
sky’, thanks to his early ability to use
perspective. Paul’s career took a different
path when he was made redundant in
the 1970s - it was the push he needed
to combine his skills as a technical
illustrator with his skills in picture
framing and restorations to create his
own business.
Paul told Aspire: “As a child and into
my teenage years, I was lucky enough
to receive tutelage from the late
Winton Aldridge, who was a protégé of
Edward Wesson; one of Britain’s most
outstanding 20th century watercolourists
– Winton was an artist I greatly admired.
He taught me how to loosen up with
my art and diversify from the technical
drawing I was more proficient in. After
he passed away I actually framed around
500 of his pictures on the request of
his family.” The influence of Winton
Aldridge can be seen in some of Paul’s
stunning paintings of buildings and street
scenes.
Paul’s restoration work includes restoring
old photographs of towns and villages,
which can be sourced and reproduced.
Paul also uses the latest technology to
enhance and repair prints of family,
relatives and friends to their former
condition, in black and white, sepia, or
colour.
So, if you’re looking for the perfect focal
point for your newly decorated home,
why not give Paul Castle a call and ask
him to paint you a beautiful painting don’t forget to tell him Aspire sent you!

dogs to stay
So you might already be the proud owner of a St. Bernard or
of a lovely house trained rabbit, or whichever animal you own
and take pride in. But have you ever thought about the pros
and cons of our furry companions?
Dogs are said to be man’s best friend, and to be honest, there
does seem to be a breed suited for each and every one of us.
Whether or not you could cope with a bouncy Springer Spaniel
or a greedy Labrador is another matter! But when considering
investing in a canine friend, you really have to think long and
hard about what is best for it, and what is best for you. So,
if you live in a one bedroom first floor flat, perhaps a dog
really isn’t for you - with not much room indoors and no room
outdoors, the dog would become reckless and tiresome.
Keeping it in a confined space could also pose serious health
risks. Obesity isn’t just a problem among us humans you know!
On the other hand, if you are living in a house with a good
amount of garden space, the dog is sure to stay fit and healthy
when regularly let out.
But this isn’t all there is to think about. There is a massive cost
involved in maintaining a healthily animal, not only food, but
also pet insurance or operation prices if the dog gets ill. Also
remember many breeds have a tendency to chew things - so
some items in your home might need replacing! When owning
a dog you also have a huge responsibility to take the dog out,
for a recommended two good walks a day, at least. Although
this could have major health benefits for you by keeping
active, you might not have the time to spend walking each day.
So perhaps then it’s time to look into something else…
Perhaps you should opt for the low maintenance cat? As long
as you have a cat flap, they can let themselves in and out and
they don’t need walking at all! Although you still have to pay
for food and perhaps pet insurance, it is a lot cheaper than
for dogs. The only major pay out is the vet bills, but if you
20
ASPIRE
chose to get pet insurance this minimises the impact this would
have on your wallet! Cats can be very good company and
can become quite affectionate with the right care, but beware
some cats bring in unwanted gifts… birds and mice aren’t the
nicest thing to find on your kitchen floor in the morning!
Maybe you don’t want the hassle of having to let your pet
outdoors at all? So perhaps the cat and the dog aren’t the
best option for you? In that case, consider getting a rabbit, a
guinea pig, a hamster or many of the other small creatures
available. These pets are the most inexpensive and only need
a bit of attention once a day and their cages cleaned out every
few days. The only thing you are paying for is the one off cost
for a cage and then their food, which costs next to nothing!
With all the pets we’ve talked about already, you may still
not have found the one for you…you might be interested in
something a bit different or a bit tropical? How about looking
into getting a parrot, a cockatiel, a budgie or a love bird?
These beautiful birds really are not the norm, but can still be
great pets! You do need to be willing to give them a lot of time
and attention though and they are probably some of the more
expensive pets that are on offer.
If you still haven’t found a pet for you, maybe it’s time to give
up? Perhaps you aren’t the pet lover you thought you were.
But there is one option still left… fish. There are many different
varieties in many different shapes, sizes and colours. Their
pricing varies on how rare or tropical the fish is, but once you
have purchased a tank and the right equipment, they are very
easy and inexpensive to keep.
So, hopefully you are now more aware of what pets can offer
you, and what you can offer them. But be sure to make the
right choice when choosing a pet and give it all the care and
attention it needs!

The loss of a pet can be one of the most devastating experiences
we have to endure and when the dreadful time arrives coping with
it alone can be harder still. It’s not common to turn to others for
support when we lose a pet, however the Companion Animal Loss
Listening Line (C.A.L.L.L) offers support and a shoulder to cry on
during these trying times. Established by Christine Hartley, the
confidential listening line provides a unique opportunity for both
young and old to speak with a professional regarding the loss of
their pet.
Reasons for loss vary but can all result

• Death of the pet - illness, injury.
• Euthanasia of sick animals
• Euthanasia of healthy animals - if required by law, unwanted pets etc.
• Missing pets - lost, stolen etc.
• Placement of the pet for adoption - due to changes of circumstances i.e. owner entering residential care, relationship problems etc.
One important difference between pet
loss and human loss is that pet loss is
often not appreciated. For someone who
has truly loved a pet, however, the loss of
that animal can feel just as devastating
as a human loss, if not more. The very
things that make animals different from
humans often make them more endearing. An animal that does not talk cannot pass
judgment or withhold companionship and love. For many people pets provide a
source of unwavering love, affection and companionship and therefore the loss of
that companion can be heartbreaking.
Most of us consider our pets to be members of the family, and even spend more time
taking their pets to the vet than going to the doctor for themselves. Given the rich
and intense relationships most pet owners share with their animal companions, the
loss of a pet can be very painful. Christine understands that the loss of a beloved pet
can trigger overwhelming feelings of grief and sadness and lead to trouble sleeping,
weight loss and having difficulty focusing on everyday tasks in life. She can help you
gradually begin to cope.
Christine has been involved in the caring profession throughout her working life. After
training as a nurse and spending many years in this rewarding career, a change in
circumstances meant she moved from nursing to bereavement work, especially with
those that have lost their companion animals.
“This area of care can be underrated as a serious need, many do not take pet loss
seriously and do not realise how it can effect all ages both emotionally and physically.
I feel it also important to stress that this service is available to people at any stage
during the loss of their pet. People can also need great support if their pet is suffering
from a serious or terminal illness. We at C.A.L.L.L. would, therefore, like to assist
those enduring the pre-death period with their companion animal. I deal with all
clients on an individual basis and ensure continuity and confidentiality throughout.
My aim is to accompany a client on their journey through grief. I am happy to spend
as much time during however many calls that may be needed.”
The C.A.L.L.L helpline is open from 8:30am until 9:30pm every day and all calls
are charged at just the standard rate. So, if you’re trying to cope with the loss of a
beloved pet, small or large, telephone the Companion Animal Loss Listening Line
(C.A.L.L.L.) on 0115 840 2737 or visit the website at www.calll.co.uk. Christine is

There Is Something About
The Outside Of A Horse That Is
Good For The Inside Of A Man.
Horse riding is a sport that anyone,
regardless of age, ability or background
can have a go at. Finding the perfect
horse is the ultimate dream for the
majority of riders, but unfortunately,
the experience can quickly turn into a
nightmare! Whether you’re looking for
a horse simply for pleasure, for hacking,
hunting, dressage, gymkhana, or even
carriage driving, there are hundreds of
breeds to choose from. From a beautifully
poised horse from a top progeny, to a
more humble mare from a less renowned
background, it’s so important for the right
horse to be paired with the right rider.
“Anyone who has ever owned
a horse will know ‘the special
bond’ horse and rider share and
the endless joy it brings...”
When looking to buy a horse, it’s
important to firstly consider the cost of
not only buying a horse, but also the cost
of keeping the horse – do you and your
family really have sufficient time, money,
and experience to look after a horse?
As well as food and shelter, horses need
regular exercise and grooming, as well as
veterinary care, all of which will take up a
large amount of time, and money.
Once you’ve agreed that you have the
time, money and experience to care for
a horse, you have to decide what type of
horse you’d like. Aspire suggest making a
list of the qualities that are essential in any
horse you buy, as well as a separate list of
what would be desirable. Any horse you
consider should have, at least, ALL of the
qualities listed on the essential list, and,
hopefully, one or two off the desired list.
Anyone who has ever owned a horse will
know ‘the special bond’ horse and rider
share and the endless joy it brings. The
trust and understanding is unlike any
other and gets stronger over time, but like
any other relationship, there has to be a
bit of a spark to start with.
Also, buying a horse without a prepurchase examination, by a qualified

Modern-day miniature horses are
kept mainly for showing or as a pet or
companion; the cost of caring for them
is also significantly less than their larger
counterparts. Although they cannot be
ridden, they are a real pleasure to keep.
If you’re interested in finding our more
about these beautiful animals, the MHCGB
has numerous regional shows taking place
across the country throughout the summer,
but their two nationals shows are a great
place to start.

ASPIRE
Their National Spring Show takes place
at Arena UK in Grantham on Saturday
25th April. This amazing show has various
classes for every type of miniature horse,
including driving, jumping and halter
obstacle. However, if you can’t make this
national show, the MHCGB also have their
Grand Championship Show at Moulton
Equestrian College in Northampton on
Saturday 12th September, where visitors
can witness the spectacular end of season
finale, evening performance, stunning
rosettes, sashes and flower garlands.
Janice Goudie from the MHCGB told Aspire:
“Miniature horses are a very versatile
equine and we’re very keen to encourage
anybody that’s interested in this charming
bred to come and see us at one of our
shows. It doesn’t cost a penny to get in and
both national shows take place at indoor
arenas so whether it’s glorious sunshine or
pouring with rain, visitors will be warm and
dry. We really want to make more and more
people aware of this amazing bred simply
because they’re ideal for everyone, whether
you’re a young child, an older child or adult
who’s wary of larger horses, or a special
needs child who doesn’t fully understand
the size of larger horses.”
Miniature Horses are found all over the
world, they come in various types from the
heavier Irish Draft type to the Arabian or
Thoroughbred type, in fact, for many large
breeds there is a miniature counterpart.

Held at Melton Mowbray on the 3rd and 4th May 2009, the 167th Leicestershire
County Show promises to be amazing. Under the guidance of the new Show Director,
Liz Earle, the show is being taken in a new and interesting direction with the launch of
several feature areas, and new livestock classes.
Family entertainment will take centre stage at Northamptonshire’s premier
countryside event. The Kelmarsh Country Fair, taking place on Sunday 12th
and Monday 13th April, offers something for everyone. Ideal for visitors of all
ages, Kelmarsh Country Fair combines traditional family fun with great value,
making it the perfect way to spend this Easter bank holiday weekend. Feature
areas such as the ‘Game For Everything’ Food Festival, the Main Arena, the
Animal Experience and Falconry Classroom will give you a unique opportunity
to explore the very best that British country life has to offer.
With 3 miles of exhibition stands offering over 250 retail opportunities the
Kelmarsh Country Fair picnic areas provide a much welcome chance to take
the weight of your feet. The central picnic area offers live music provided by
Casablanca Steps. Their ability to combine outstanding visual performances with
authentic musical ambience of the 1920’s & 30’s gives you a completely unique
form of musical entertainment. Other picnic areas provide entertainment for all
the family including prime viewing of the Main Arena, or traditional Punch and
Judy and magic displays.

The Canine Corner features two show rings; one holding fun Gun Dog Classes and
racing for Terriers and Lurchers, the other will be host to Gun dog, behavioural and
obedience demonstrations, Scrufts Qualifiers and ‘Have a Go’ agility. All of these
classes allow the visitors to bring their family dog and compete and interact with the
demonstrations. The Grand Ring is also featuring Flayball competitions.
After all that thirsty work, head over to the ever popular Framers’ Market. The County
Show have a ‘producer only’ policy in this area, meaning the person you purchased
something off, has raised or grown it personally! The food ranges from Hog Roasts,
Rare Breed sausages, cakes to jams, pickle and preserves. There is even a bar for the
gentlemen. In the non-food section, you can find soaps, candles, gifts, smellies and even
herb potions!
But it doesn’t stop there. This year the Leicestershire County Show welcomes Jimmy’s
Farm as a supporter of this area, so pop over, get a book signed and your photo
taken at the same time as tasting those lovely sausages. Afterwards, take a seat in
the Farmers Kitchen and see to how to turn all these
ingredients into wonderful dishes.
So, plenty for the adults, but what about the kids? Follow
the adventure trail around the show to discover how to
milk a cow, walk a lizard or care for exotic creatures at
the petting zoo, grind wheat to make bread, or perhaps
they just fancy doing some crafts and painting in the
Country Side marquee, there’s something for all ages.

from Leicester to Paris in less than four hours, thanks
to the high-speed train links with London St Pancras

seen by the city is set to continue, despite the recession!
Many of us take for granted the area in which we live,
never really exploring everything it has to offer. The
start of the Easter school holidays (today) presents the
ideal opportunity to explore our home counties whilst
entertaining easily bored children.
Northamptonshire
Leicestershire
Currently the 10th largest city in England (on population),
Leicester has seen something of a major transformation in
recent months. The £350 million Highcross development
has transformed the city centre beyond recognition and
the developments being implemented by the Leicester
Regeneration Company, on the outskirts of the city, have
made Leicester a much friendlier, more welcoming place.
Due to its delightful array of country houses and
historical buildings, Northamptonshire deservedly
promotes its status as the city of ‘squires and spires’.
Northamptonshire is reputable for being home to one
of the UK’s largest market towns, with unique historical
charm dating back to 1235. Neighbouring towns offer
alternative attractions for all the family, so there’s no
excuse to turn down the opportunity to explore.
This all-new, exciting and stylish city beautifully contrasts
with the ancient architecture and charm of old Leicester!

With the recession gripping the nation, it’s vital that you
choose the services offered by local companies. The more
money you spend within our own economy, the better
equipped businesses across Aspire’s two counties will

stronger and better for it. Spending money within our
own economy also means more jobs will remain secure,
allowing many more families to avoid the upset and

During The Recession?
We all know we should be doing more
to reduce our carbon emissions, but it
can be hard to identify areas in which
you can save money, especially for
businesses; and, with the economic
downturn causing more businesses
to be conscious about where their
hard earned profits are going, there’s
never been a better time to employ the
services of the Business & Recycling
Team at Groundwork Leicester &
Leicestershire Aspire sent Features
Writer, Laura Merry, along to see
the Business & Recycling Team at
their base in Western Park, Leicester
to find out more about this great
charity, as well as presenting the
Business & Recycling Team with an
Aspire Certificate of Recognition for
Environmental Services 2009…
The Business & Recycling Team work
with over 350 businesses across
Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
to identify areas in which they can
save money, for example by reducing
energy bills and the volume of waste to
landfill. The team of experts that make
up the Business & Recycling Team
then help businesses achieve the
right solutions to help meet legal, and
stakeholder, requirements.

The Business & Recycling Team
provide recycling solutions and help
businesses implement Environmental
Management Systems, ISO 14001 or
BS 8555, which is a phased approach
to achieving ISO 14001 which is
perfect for small or medium sized

collects paper, card, metals and most
plastics from businesses diverting over
2000 tonnes of waste from landfill.
Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire
practice what they preach and are
themselves ISO14001 certified. The
Business & Recycling Team are also
experts in understanding new and ever
changing environmental legislation
that may increase the risk of noncompliance for businesses of all sizes.
During these times of economic crisis,
it’s vital to save money wherever you
can, without affecting the quality of
your products or service, so limiting
your carbon footprint is the clear way
to do this.
Emma Hill from the Business &
Recycling Team told Aspire: “There has
been a large increase in the number
of businesses requesting our services
over the last decade, as more and
more consumers begin to demand
that the businesses they buy from/
deal with are as ‘green’ as they can
be. As well as identifying areas in
which the business can save money,
we also train staff to spot the risks
and increase their awareness of their
impact on the environment.
One example of how much the
Business & Recycling Team can save
your business money can be found in
a recent three-year project they carried
out with the help of 66 businesses
across the region. The solutions
identified and implemented, along with
recycling, staff training and increased
awareness, saved the 66 businesses
£725, 711!
The Business & Recycling Team are
currently working with a large food and
drinks manufacturer to reduce their
carbon footprint across seven sites
and two distribution centres. Over the
last year, the Team have helped this
well-known company cut the amount of
waste sent to landfill from 100 tonnes
a month to virtually nothing, with a
large chunk now being recycled; this
has saved the company over £2000
per month.
With all this good work, Aspire
simply had to reward the Business &
Recycling Team with a Certificate of
Recognition. When Laura presented
Emma and her colleague, Katheryn
Knight, with the Certificate, Emma
said: “We’re really pleased to
receive this Certificate. It’s nice to be
recognised for all the hard work we do,
especially as we try to secure funding
in order to help business for free
whenever possible.”
Groundwork Leicester & Leicestershire
became a member of the national
Groundwork Federation three years
ago, but their work actually dates
back to 1983; they were instrumental
in helping Leicester become the first
designated ‘environmental city’ in
1990.
So, if your business is in need of
help to not only cut your carbon
emissions, but also save cash during
the recession, contact the Business &

of opportunities to get close to nature. With no less
then 250 miles of waymarked paths across the county

many of these walks, especially through Black Spout
Wood, you’ll see dramatic scenery and countless
animals, such as red squirrels and roe deer.

Did you know that there are 14 National
Parks in England, Scotland and Wales,
covering 8862 sq miles? These National
Parks provide an escape from the hustle
and bustle of our cities and towns into the
pure tranquillity and beauty of the great
British outdoors.
Amongst the first areas to be designated
as National Parks, The Lake District
(1951) and The Yorkshire Dales (1954)
are two of the most beautiful and
most visited (over eight million visitors
each year) National Parks in Great
Britain. If you’re thinking of visiting
these breathtaking areas, you’ll need
a comfortable and central base from
which to explore – Aspire would like to
recommend Underley Grange, situated
only a few miles from the M6 and perfectly
placed between The Yorkshire Dales and
The Lake District.
Underley Grange is a recently refurbished
Grade II Listed country house that
was originally a traditional Victorian
farmhouse in the 14th century. Since
then, it has been added to, to create
the large stately home that exists today
– the grand frontage was added in the
1800s. Sleeping up to 16 people in nine
bedrooms, Underley Grange boasts eight
bathrooms (and a downstairs cloakroom),
four sitting rooms (each with their own
TV), a large kitchen/breakfast room, a
separate dining room, a large utility room,
a games room (with full-size snooker
table, darts board and Hi Fi), an outdoor
heated swimming pool (only available
during the summer) and hot tub, and a
garage that holds up to four cars, all set
within three/four acres. There is also
a small conference room available for
business use.
With such a large capacity, Underley
Grange is the perfect destination for
family get-togethers, wedding receptions,
or just a week away with friends. As each
visit to Underley Grange is tailor-made
As Underley Grange is part of a 5,000
acre country estate, there’s an abundance
of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors
without ever setting foot outside the
estate walls. As well as walking, riding,
and cycling, guests can enjoy fly-fishing
on private sections of The River Lune, clay
pigeon shooting, and golf on an 18-hole
golf course. However, the estate sits
directly between The Lake District and The
Yorkshire Dales (just above The Trough of
Bowland), making it the ideal base from
which to explore these magnificent areas,
steeped in history and rich in natural
beauty.
With over 3000 kilometres of rights of way
and 12 of the largest lakes in England,
including the stunning Lake Windermere,
the Lakes have something for everyone.
Covering 680 square miles, The Yorkshire
Dales is a truly unique landscape that has
something for everyone.
The historic market town of Kirby Lonsdale
is just two and a half miles away. This
unspoilt town is home to an array of
shops, many of which have an unusual
character and charm as many of them
have retained their original architecture.
it has so much to offer, from castles and
museums, to contemporary shops and
boutiques, and from great restaurants
and eateries, to a vibrant nightlife full
of entertainment. The city dates back
to Roman times and has a legacy of
predominately Georgian buildings.
Underley Grange is just one of seven
properties available for rent on the
Underley Estate: The Deer House (sleeps
four), The Old Laundry (sleeps two), Scar
Brow Cottage (sleeps eight), Bluebell

Known as the ‘Gateway to the Lakes’,

England in comfortable and beautiful
accommodation, look no further than

properties owned by the Underley Estate.

Have A Marvellous Time At
The Moorings
Opened in 2006, The
Moorings is a friendly and
welcoming B&B run by Lyn
Oliver and family. Having
owned the property for
the last 30 years, the
Olivers decided to extend
into the loft, which left the
three bedrooms on the first
floor of the house empty.
Lyn decided to open her
house as a B&B and the
rest, as they say, is history.
With three comfortable
and clean rooms (one
king and two twins), The
Moorings is ideal for
families, couples and
businessmen and women, looking for the
perfect place to rest their weary legs after
a long day. All the en-suite rooms boast the
usual B&B facilities, such as hospitality tray,
TV and DVD player, and hairdryers and
iron facilities, upon request.
As breakfast is the most important meal
of the day, Lyn doesn’t hold back; she’ll
cook anything you want (within reason), so
whether you fancy a full English fry-up or
just a round of toast and jam, you’ll enjoy a
great start to your day. Everything used at
breakfast is sourced from
the local farm shop. For
evenings, The Moorings
is within easy walking
distance of numerous
eateries.
Wake Up
In The Country
Farming has been part of British life for
thousands of years, with much of our
great landscape having been shaped and
moulded by agriculture. Our towns and
cities grew thanks to the creation of farms
to sustain the local population, and the
majority of what is now ‘the green belt’,
whose purpose is to stop towns and
villages merging into one another, has a
long history as farmed land.
The Moorings is ideally
placed for exploring the
New Forest – two miles in
one direction and you’ll be
in the heart of the forest,
but half a mile in the other
direction and you’ll be
at the seaside. The town
of New Milton also has a
train station situated just
10-minutes walk from The
Moorings, so even those
without a car can enjoy a break to this
stunning area of the UK. The Olivers also
provide a secure lock-up for bicycles, as
well as plenty of off-road parking.
Farming covers a wide range of
agricultural work, from small-holdings
that produce only enough food to meet
the needs of the family, right through
to intensive farms with large fields,
numerous animals and high-levels of
machinery.
Many people believe that UK farming is
in decline but did you know that during
2006, UK farming contributed £5.6
billion to the economy; it also employs
over half a million people. However, to
remain afloat, many farmers have had to
diversify and now offer a whole host of
holiday accommodation solutions, to suit
every taste and budget.
So, with each room costing £58/£60 per
night (based on two sharing), a break to

Four Star Gold Award
A holiday on a working farm is an
unforgettable experience. Not only does
it provide you with fresh air and fine
views, it can also make you and your
family healthier. Many farms sell their
surplus crops in farm shops, so if you’re
on a self-catering break you can buy and
cook them for yourself. However, if you
choose to stay in a B&B, many serve their
own produce, including sausages, eggs
and bacon, as part of breakfast, allowing
you to enjoy the taste of home grown/
reared produce and real home cooking!
The choice of properties that you can
choose to spend you holiday in vary
greatly. Many farms have updated and
modernised their handsome farmhouses
to offer B&B accommodation, while
self-catering breaks can be enjoyed in
cottages, converted farm buildings, log
cabins or even static caravans. These
properties are true country dwellings,
where a warm, truly genuine welcome
awaits you!

When we think of holidays in Britain, we usually think
of donkey rides and sand castles on the beach, ice

Southside Is The Perfect
Pet Friendly Accommodation
Finding the ideal place to enjoy a holiday when
you have dogs can be a nightmare. Although an
increasing number of self-catering accommodations
are opening their eyes to the ‘dog-lover’ market,
most only take one well-behaved dog at any one
time, but what if you have more than one dog that’s
part of your family?
Aspire would like to recommend Southside
Holiday Home in the village of Pott Row,
near Kings Lynn in Norfolk. Described at
a dog lovers dream, Southside welcomes
any number of dogs, having once catered
for a holidaymaker who brought with them
17 dogs!
With such affection for dogs, and their
owners, Aspire had to acknowledge
Southside with a Certificate of Recognition
for Pet Friendly Accommodation.
Owned by the Ford family since 1996,
Southside is the ideal base for discerning
dogs and their owners to enjoy a well
earned rest, as well as exploring the great
British outdoors. Southside boasts two
tastefully decorated bedrooms (a double
and a twin), a large bathroom, a living
room/diner, a well-equipped kitchen, a
conservatory added just last year, and a
well-lit (ideal for night time) enclosed dog
run, as well as grounds that cover a sixth of
an acre.
All rooms are decorated to a high standard,
with all the home-from-home comforts
included, such as Freeview and central
heating. There’s also plenty of off road
parking.
On receiving our Certificate, Janis Ford
said: “Thank you Aspire for this wonderful
recognition. We work so hard to cater for
the needs of dogs as well as their owners,
as we understand a holiday is for the whole
family. With the array of attractions and
place to visit within the surrounding areas,
we truly feel that dogs and their owners will
enjoy every second they
spend here in Norfolk.”
Senior Sales Executive,
Barbara Stone, added:
“Although there is now
more choice for dog
owners than there was
a decade ago, there is
no holiday home quite
like Southside. The
Ford family really do
appreciate that dogs
are just as much part of
the family as children,
so it’s great to see them
welcoming the ENTIRE
family with open arms.”
Pott Row is a quiet and
picturesque village situated just six miles from the
bustling market town of Kings Lynn, which has
regular market days (usually on Tuesdays and
Saturdays).A little further afield, the quaint seaside
town of Hunstanton has a market on Wednesdays
and Sundays, while Fakenham (home of
Fakenham Race Course) is home to a flee market
and auction every Thursday.
The areas surrounding Southside are great for
walking, especially with dogs, thanks to the miles
upon miles of unspoilt countryside that surround
Southside. The common is just a short, pleasant
walk from the bungalow, whilst the coast offers
an abundance of coastal walks along cliff tops, or
strolls along the beach, in particular Snettisham,
where you can enjoy exploring the sand dunes.
The area itself is a haven for wildlife, especially
birds, making Southside an ideal base for twitchers
too. Not only is Southside within easy reach of
Snettisham RSPB Reserve and Titchwell
RSPB Reserve, there’s also an abundance
of opportunities to see rare breeds of birds
at Cley and Salthouse Marshes, Holme
Dunes, and Holme Marsh Bird Reserve.
So, if you’re looking for a relaxing and
peaceful base from which to explore the
beauty of Norfolk, but don’t want to leave
your four-legged friends with friends or in
kennels, Aspire recommend Southside
Holiday Home.
