Making A Difference
A guide for those who want to give … and those who are
seeking help.
This year the Human Development Council is asking you to
make a difference for individuals and families in our region.
Donate a gift for children, teens, adults or seniors. Drop off nonperishable food items to a local food drive or a food bank. Make a
donation to a non-profit agency. Give the gift of time - volunteer.
Call the Saint John Volunteer Centre, 506-658-1555, or the
Volunteer Centre of Charlotte County, 506-466-4995.

Other Ways to Give...
Being alone can be particularly difficult during the holiday season.
Many individuals, nursing home residents, single parents, and seniors would appreciate the gift of a visit, a drive in the country, or an
invitation to a meal with you and your family. Useful items for anyone on fixed or low income include: gift certificates for haircuts or
manicures, pre-paid long distance cards, transportation / bus
passes, movie passes, membership to a fitness centre or sports program, gift of a food basket including small canned goods, crackers,
soups mixes and cookies, a subscription to a newspaper or
magazine or, stationary/postage stamps.

Community Assistance Programs
If you, or someone you know, are currently receiving assistance from a community service or agency, contact the
agency directly to learn about any holiday assistance programs they have in place. The following list provides information on some of the holiday assistance programs in the region.
Toys/Gifts/Food Baskets
The Empty Stocking Fund - Greater Saint John area
- provides gifts for needy children. Apply through Telegraph Journal Office, 210 Crown Street, Saint John, or
through local churches. Applications must be received
by November 23.
Salvation Army Sussex provides Christmas hampers
and gifts to needy individuals and families. Apply at the
office by Dec 17, 79 Main St. Sussex, or call 433-4561.
Greater Saint John Community Christmas Exchange - register by December 12 with your social
worker or a local church to receive a food hamper for
Christmas.
Sussex Sharing Club - receiving applications until
November 30 for Christmas boxes for people who need
assistance in the Sussex area. Pick up application at the
Club, 8 Court St., Tues and Thurs, 10:00am-2:30pm,
433-6047.
Holiday Meals
Dec. 6 - Feast of Christmas, open to all. 11:45–
2:00pm, Salvation Army Residential Services, St. James
St. Saint John. Free - call ahead to pick up ticket, 6347021.
Dec. 14 - Main Street Baptist Church, 211 Main St,
Saint John North, offers a holiday meal for all North End
residents in need, Noon.
Dec. 25 - Romero House, 647-669 Brunswick Drive,
Saint John. (Romero House is open 365 days per year).
Dec. 25 - Volunteer Centre of Charlotte County is
holding a free Christmas Dinner, 2:00pm at the Branch
#48 Legion for anyone who is alone over the holidays.
Register at the Volunteer Centre at 466-4995 by Dec. 14.
Volunteer Centre of Charlotte County registers
names of individuals and families in need of Christmas
food hampers and gifts. Call 466-4995 to register.

How to Make a Difference
Angels Anonymous - toy drive for Salvation Army.
Drop off toys at Dairy Queen Restaurants (Rothesay
Ave., Wellesley Ave., and Hampton Rd., Rothesay)
Children's Book Drive - (toddlers to teens) Coles
Bookstore, Lancaster Mall, West Saint John. Purchase
a book at this location and Coles will donate it to
Romero House.
Christmas Angels Program - RCMP District 3, 530
Main St, Hampton. Collects new toys, new clothing,
and non-perishable food items for the Hampton Food
Bank. Drop off between 8:00am-4:30pm, Mon-Fri,
Nov. 27 - Dec. 15.
Christmas Daddies - Dec. 2. Live television broadcast. Funds raised are returned to the community from
which they originated and are distributed by The
Salvation Army in the form of toys, gifts, clothing, and
food. NB Coordinator 857-2616.
Christmas Miracle - Salvation Army and Maritime
Broadcasting (Big John FM, CFBC, K-100) providing
an on-air program of matching a Christmas wish with
a donor. Example: Barbie doll for a 10 year old girl.
Coats for Kids - sponsored by Acadia Broadcasting
Ltd., Country 94, The Wave, The Tide 98.1. In Saint
John: coats, hats, mitts, scarves, etc. can be dropped
off at any New System Laundry, and McAllister Place
Mall until the end of November; clothing is distributed
by Saint John Boys and Girls Club. In St. Stephen
drop off at The Tide, 112 Milltown Blvd, clothing is
distributed by the Volunteer Centre Charlotte County.
Community Christmas Exchange - develops and
maintains a registration list of needy families. The
Exchange takes the names of sponsors (individuals,
groups, corporate, and churches) willing to provide
food hampers. To sponsor a family or to donate, call
634-7868.
Dolan Road Irving, Rothesay - Turkey Drive,
Dec. 1-15, for families from Sussex to St. Stephen. If
unable to drop off turkey, pick up can be arranged,
call 847-2600.
Eastern Charlotte Lions Christmas Telethon Nov 24, 1:00pm-6:00pm at the Clubhouse in
Pennfield. Funds raised provide those in need with
dinners, candy, clothes, toys, and sundries. Call
755-3713 for information or to donate.

Empty Stocking Fund - accepts financial donations
used to provide toys and gifts to needy children in Saint
John. Broadcast on television Nov. 24. To donate, call
the Empty Stocking Fund 645-3234.
Grocery Carts - Main Street Baptist Church, 211 Main
St, North. Provides groceries and gifts (clothing, toys,
mitts, hats, and candy for children and youth) for North
End residents. The church accepts financial contributions and donations of clean accessories (hats, mitts,
gloves, scarves), and non-perishable food items.
Harbour Lights - CBC Saint John and Port Saint
John. Pay $2 to light a bulb on the tree at Harbour Passage, contributions donated to area food banks,
632-7710. Dec. 3-21
Knits for Kids - West Branch Library, Lancaster Mall,
Saint John. Donations of knitted goods, hats, mitts, and
scarves, to be distributed to Hestia House and Romero
House.
Mitten Tree-Trinity Anglican Church, Charlotte St.
Saint John. Collecting mittens, hats and scarves for distribution by the Inner City Youth Ministry,

Saint John Seafarers Mission - provides gift boxes
to seafarers visiting the Saint John Port during the
Christmas season. Call for information on how you can
contribute, 635-1731.
Salvation Army Kettle Drive - begins Nov. 23.
Salvation Army Saint John:

sponsor a family call 634-1633.
- Turkey Drive –drop off turkeys at the following fire
stations: Loch Lomond Road, Leinster Street, Manchester Ave, and Millidge Ave. Saint John, or at the Salvation
Army, Waterloo St.
