FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 5, 2015 MUSIC AND FILM IN MOTION ANNOUNCES 2015 NOMFA FILM NOMINEES Sudbury– On the evening of May 30th, Music and Film in Motion will host the Northern Ontario Music and Film Awards and present 11 artists with awards for excellence in music and film MFM is thrilled to announce the nominees in its five exciting Film Award categories. These nominees represent the best and brightest in filmmaking from all over Northern Ontario: BEST FEATURE FILM The Captive Filmed in Sudbury and Niagara Falls Produced by Atom Egoyan, Stephen Traynor, Simone Urdl, Jennifer Weiss Directed by Atom Egoyan A pick-up truck pulls off the highway at a diner. Confident that his young daughter is safe in the back seat and promising to return with ice cream, the father slips out of his truck and into the diner. When he returns, she is gone. Cas and Dylan Filmed in Sudbury and Calgary Produced by Mark Montefoire, Directed by Jason Priestley Two unlikely companions, Dr. Cas Pepper and Dylan, hit the road, encountering a series of bizarre twists and turns along their cross-country journey. Fall Filmed in Sault Ste. Marie and Niagara Falls Produced by Merhernaz Lentin / Directed by Terrance Odette Father Sam, an aging Roman Catholic Priest living contently at a Niagara Falls parish, receives a letter forcing his complacent life into descent. Now haunted by the memory of a teenage boy, Father Sam must reconcile the truth. Can a moral custodian of the faithful; transcend his own fall? Clarabel Produced and Directed by Ben Bruhmuller An old man dies in his sleep listening to his gramophone. In his dream, he follows a long-lost loved one—Clarabel—deep into the vistas of his subconscious landscape. The Underground Produced and Directed by Michelle Latimer An Iranian refugee experiences North American life by imagining himself as a cockroach, the only living creature that will survive after humanity perishes in the apocalypse. BEST DIRECTOR Kristin Shepherd, Undertow Kristin Shepherd is a filmmaker and playwright from North Bay, Ontario. She has written and directed three short films. Undertow was her first. Love in difficult circumstances is her interest in both film and theatre. Michelle Latimer, Alias and The Underground Michelle Latimer is an actor, filmmaker and curator from Thunder Bay. Her award-winning documentary, Alias, premiered at the 2013 Hot Docs Film Festival and was nominated for two 2015 Canadian Screen Awards before screening internationally. Her latest short film The Underground premiered at Toronto International Film Festival and was presented at the Cannes Film Festival. BEST ACTOR IN A NORTHERN ONTARIO PRODUCTION Richard Dreyfuss, Cas & Dylan Richard Dreyfuss is an American actor best known for starring in a number of film, television, and theater roles since the late 1960s, including the films American Graffiti, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and The Goodbye Girl. Ryan Reynolds, The Captive Born in Vancouver, BC, Ryan Reynolds has emerged as one of Hollywood's most sought-after leading men – no matter what the genre. Whether expressing himself in comedy or drama, Ryan Reynolds is a magnetic screen presence and homegrown talent. Tatiana Maslany, Cas & Dylan Tatiana Maslany is a Canadian actress. She has starred in television series such as The Nativity, Being Erica, Heartland, and Orphan Black. In 2013, she won an ACTRA for her role as Claire in the film Picture Day, and a Phillip Borsos Award for her performance in the film Cas & Dylan. BEST SCREENPLAY Anne Boulton, Dancing is Meaningless Anne Boulton writes award-winning scripts for Greenboots. In 2013, their short film Dancing is Meaningless, won the Audience Choice award and CTV’s Best in Shorts at Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival. Anne is a proud Sudbury resident. Michele Derosier, Angelique’s Isle Michelle is an award-winning filmmaker and co-owner of Thunderstone Pictures Inc. where she works as a producer, writer and director. Michelle is Anishinaabe and is a member of Migisi Sahgaigan, (Eagle Lake First Nation) and currently lives in Thunder Bay. Jules Koostachin, Broken Angel Jules Arita Koostachin is from Attawapiskat First Nation, and currently resides in Sudbury. Upon graduating from Ryerson University, Jules was one of six women selected across Canada for the Women in the Director’s Chair program at the Banff Centre, where she directed a scene from her script Broken Angel. For each category, the nominees were selected by a panel of prominent music and film industry professionals. The winner for each category will be announced at The Awards Ceremony held on Saturday, May 30th at 8pm at the Sudbury Theatre Centre.
