Captives (2015)
(Original title: Brantsi )
Country of production: Ukraine
Synopsis: This is a detective story-documentary. Over a year has passed since the
tragic events on Institustka Street in Kyiv on February 20, 2014. On that
day,special-forces units opened fire on the protestors, unleashing their destruction,
killing over 50 people and wounding over 200. The ensuing chaos within the ranks of
law enforcement agencies combined with the protestor’s fear of repression among
activists, created countless “white stains” for an already complicated crime without
precedence in criminal history. To date, not a single case has been brought to the
court...Today our heroes volunteer to supply equipment for soldiers deployed in the
ATO, yet despite the war, they have not forgotten their search for justice. They are
different characters with different stories following different paths to the truth, but they
have one common goal...A lawyer is searching for witnesses to the shooting death of
her client. A son uncovers the circumstances of his father’s death. A father, distrusting
the prosecutor’s office, organizes his own independent investigation into the murder
of his son...At the same time the criminal case proceeds, OLEKSANDR KLOCHKO
(SASHKO) a biology student, who helped carry the wounded and dead from Institutska
Street that day begins his own investigation. During these bloody events, Sashko
bumps into a soldier from the Interior Troops of the Ministry of the Interior in the
hallway of the International Culture and Art Center (a.k.a October Palace). He looks just
like Sashko, twenty-something, grimy and covered in soot from the burning Maidan, he
is exhausted almost to death, and lost. Sashko tries to convince him to relinquish his
weapon and join the protestors. At that moment he realizes the absurdity of the
nightmare around him. This soldier becomes Sashko’s metaphysical reflection, one in
which he sees the opposite image of his own self, like opposite poles.
